I remember in 1961 going to the movie downtown Clemson

You could get in after 10:00 Friday nights for a quarter. Most times I went you would have to put up with a constant pounding sound coming from the front row. It would be Pete Maravich constantly dribbling a basketball. In the afternoons you would see him dribbling through town occassionaly bouncing off a wall Sloan's or Dan"s without missing a beat. I watched him play in high school. His favorite thing was to take final haftime shot as he crossed midcourt line. All net most of the time. I often wonder what a boost it would have been to Clemson basketball If they had kept Press and Pete through his college career.

I don't think I would have put up with that regardless of how good he was.

The movie was usually loaded with football and basketball players. You would have to stay home You best not touch Pete.

I guess (some) athletes being entitled a-holes is nothing new. I still admire his basketball skills, but that definitely lowers my opinion of him as a person.

I've read he later became a born again Christian. Those early days were apparently how he was raised; they said his father put a basketball in his hands as a toddler, similar to Tiger Woods swinging a golf club at a very young age.

That basketball was all he had. Whenever you saw Pete you saw a basketball Yes the dribbling in the movie was a little annoying but you got accustomed to it. Besides the movies on Friday night were usually several years old and I was not going to say anything to him or bother him. And we probably were not going to let anyone else bother him. The mgr of the theatre certainly did not bother him. Yes Pete was a born again Christian. Even before then he worked with youth and helped a lot of kids. He died young with an enlarged heart. He had a big heart in more ways than one.

Sorry dude, it's highly likely that I'm much stronger than you. Not claiming I'm the strongest person or a bad ###, but I am much stronger than the average American male. I was skinny as a youth, and when I see people from my youth that haven't seen me in years they are surprised by how much muscle I have added over the years. So highly unlikely you could do anything to me if challenged me. Most likely I would just shove you to the ground and tell you take your loss like a man without even punching you.

i remember the opening home game in brand new Littlejohn in 1968. LSU 86 - CU 85. I think Pete had about 44 shooting from the hip. No 3 pointers back then. But as they say, if you remember a lot about the 60's you probably weren't there.

As I recall . Pete and Butch had a shoot out. Late stages of the game they all went after Pete and he rifled the underneth to his foeward for a layup to win the game. About your point about 3 pointers---they did a study on his college career and he would have averaged over 60 a game if the line had existed then. I know he averaged in the low 40s as it is.

I doubt he would've averaged over 60! That would have meant

he would have had to average making 16 or 17 threes per game, since I think has highest season average was about 44. So to get to 60 with the same shots, he would have to make 16 threes per game!

My father, class of ‘60, said that he remembered seeing Pete ride through campus on his bicycle dribbling the ball. He said that he never saw Pete without a basketball.
I have a friend who went to high school with Pete at Broughton in Raleigh. She said the same thing, he carried or dribbled a ball everywhere he went.

Only played at DHS for a short time before his dad left CU. He practiced at the gym while Press worked his team out. Press would on occasion give him the ball and have his players try to steal the ball---never happened. The closest player handling the ball in that era was not Ernie D., but John Roche of USC--really NY city. Said that worked out using Pete's drills-----still not close.

Google Pete Maravich half court shots. I maybe should not have said favorite and and I do not know about college so I will retract a little. I saw more than half dozen high school games and hit more than missed. Admittedly sometimes he was 5 or 6 steps passed midcourt. He hit one in Hartwell Ga shot turned his head threw up his hands and kept walking to the bench he never stopped to watch the ball go through the net.

He was an everyday face around the athletic offices and Fike. He practiced with the varsity his dad was head coach. And yes he was a celeb on campus and he sold out high school gyms wherever he played. He was doing Harlem Globetrotter stuff at 14.

The deal with LSU was a pkg deal I do not know about academics. Press got good money and 5 year deal contingent upon Pete coming. Pete's school of choice was West Virginia Jerry West was his Idol. I am certain he could have gotten in West Virginia but he had to go with dad.

He was born without a left coronary artery. That's the main artery supplying blood to the heart. His heart was constantly oxygen deprived. It's amazing he played as well as he did and lived as long as he did.

And he died while playing basketball with a Christian team in California due to a heart attack on the court - later discovered he had that heart defect all his life.... He had been Born Again to his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ recently and had just mailed a Bible and testimonial to talk show host Larry King who revealed that he had received it several days after Pete had passed away in the mail!

I watched Caddy Shack and Zombie there in 1980-81. I saw some other movies there, but those 2 stand out. I remember signs in the lobby saying don't watch Zombie if you have a weak heart.

My high school played Daniel in I think 1961, a carload of us from Gvl went over to watch. I think Pete was in 8th grade but playing varsity. I don't remember the stats but he killed us. He was a real Pistol for sure.
