yet in Wes Goodwin. Defense has been going down hill last 2 years. This could be talent or it could be coaching. Not a very good pass rush and not gap sound on defense. Hope I am proven wrong as Wes is likable.

Sorry to say something negative. I love being wrong about stuff like this.
I was wrong about Cade this year. Even with the weak competition I was still wrong because I didn't expect him to play so well. Hopefully I am also wrong about an increase in negative sentiment about our defense by year's end.

Goodwin's inability to adjust to offenses will do him in. That Virginia Game exposed him so much. All you have to do is play hurry-up offense, and He is befuddled.

Not quite.
It’s called having very inexperienced players starting third string who are quietly getting better because of the extensive reps from App State, NC State, and Wake.

Hopefully, all of our coaches have made BOLD NOTES on their plays heels saying: "No 3rd and 4th-string defenders on the field until the final 2-minute time-out."
The 21 points given to UVa in the 4th quarter and the TDs given up late to AppState may keep us out of the CFP. Most the CFP committee will only look at the final score and classify our defense as mediocre considering the competition.

Do you people even watch the games? Usually after halftime Wes shuts down teams until we put the bench warmers in. My only gripe with Wes is that he doesn't bring enough pressure. Especially on third and long.

averaged 3.06 sacks per game. This year we are averaging 2.4 per game. So, yes there is a drop. What I would like to see is the number of times we blitz versus the number of times the blitz gets home (sack or hot while throwing). We don't seem to blitz as often now, nor (and on this I am guessing) do we get home as often as we did under BV.

we do not have the dudes on the defensive line that we've grown accustomed to. Woods is a beast but playing out of position for a reason. If our front four were Ferrell, Wilkins, Lawrence and Bryant, there'd be a lot less griping about Goodwin. Of course, with that line even I could probably be the coordinator.

We lost two top shelf DLs in the 2025 class who thought enough of our coaches to commit but for some strange, unknown reason decommitted.

The 2022 signing class was gutted when BV and Todd Bates left at the end of the 2021 season.
Recruiting on defense recovered nicely for the 2023 class, highlighted by high end talent Peter Woods, TJ Parker, Aveion Terrell, and Khalil Barnes.
Wes Goodwin must not have been perceived as no good by recruits who weighed their options before the 2023 class was signed; otherwise why would any from among the four studs listed above have signed with us?
Context matters.

You are a smart observer. Riley seems to have stepped it up with the offense, but Goodwin doesn't seem to have what it takes to be a premier DC. In fact, I grade him a "D' rated defensive coordinator. It's not the players. Clemson has probably the BEST defensive talent in the ACC. Florida State is second. Miami defensively is not good. They rely too heavily on Cam Ward to bail them out. He is wasting Peter Woods, and the rest of those DL behemoths.

Does the 2nd and 3rd team offense score every time they get on the field. If not, then by your standards, Riley is underperforming too.

It is talent or the lack of talent. We have miss evaluated multiple recruits. Patterson was rated a 5 star and hasn't played a down. NIL, the transfer portal and lack of development has hurt the program.

W.Woodaz was a low 3* player.
He’s positioning himself as a possible candidate for a first round NFL draft pick.
Jaheim Lawson was a low 3* player. He was derided by TNet snarks as one of those ‘friends and family’ signees. Jaheim is still developing as he hits midway mark of his third season here, but he’s already the third best DE on the team (behind only Woods and Parker). There is more upside for Jaheim.
Patterson wasn’t a 5*, but he’s been one of those guys with a 4* rating who didn’t develop. It happens. Ask UNC coach Mack Brown about how consensus 5* DT Travis Shaw has panned out. Shaw, currently in his third year in Chapel Hill, was by all of the recruiting services a top 10 player. He’s still not a starter in a defense that is flat out terrible.

how we have been largely in D training mode the first half of this season, keeping our schemes largely basic and getting productive reps from pretty much everyone on that side of the ball leading up this second open date.
Wes has shown in the past (see last year's Top 10 defensive production and efficiency numbers - scoring was the only outlier - thank you O) that he adapts throughout games with great consistency. He has applied this with our starters and normal early subbing, but for the most part with the rest he's calling up base D to train that 'next man up' appropriately when needed down the stretch, as well as prepping the young'uns for seasons ahead.
I have the feeling a lot more of us are going to 'get it' over this upcoming November stretch. The training wheels are off now. Class is dismissed. It's fixing to get nasty.

Wildblulou get’s it. Wes is not BV but he’s done a good job. Our defense would have top stats if Wes and Dabo were keeping the starting defense in past the third quarter. Some people just can’t be happy with anything.

Late in games when we have put wholesale changes in; teams have gouged us. 100% they have.
Georgia ended up bearing down on our starters after multiple empty possessions by the offense.
61st in points allowed. 53rd in yards per game.
Only caveat being: how many of those yards and how much of those points were against the 1st team defense?
I am a Dabo fan 100%; but he drives me nuts sometimes when he starts putting backups in the game "super early"! I believe they should play, don't get me wrong! They practice and they prepare; they should play. Plus, it keeps your starter fresh and not injured in a decided game. My thing is: "it would be awesome if coach's criteria for cushion grew some more"! 4 td's with two halves to play is not enough reps for starters. Especially, if one day that same unit will need to stop a more potent offense.
Wes is still trying to find some edge rushers. Jaheim Lawson has a lot of potential. TJ Parker needs to remain consistent. Hoffler needs to step it up as well as the other DE's on the roster. Demonte Capehart is likely a middle round draft pick. P. Page was a 4-star as well as Tre Williams. In fact, I think all of our DL on scholarship were no less than 4-star players( DT position ). I think we are good there. LB with Carter and Woodaz is where we can get a little better. If you recall Trotter making a ton of plays last year! I think Carter moved into that role this year and it may not be his natural position. Sammy is the more natural at that position; but they probably have to build trust in him enough to feel comfortable putting carter back in a more natural position. Woodaz has played well there; don't get me wrong. I just don't think Carter is playing his natural position. Averaging 5.4 tackles per game. Woodaz is averaging 7 tackles per game. The secondary is getting better each game. Mickens is steady. Barnes is steady. Starting to trust Lukus out there more and more and A. Terrell is just intense and a very good CB.
I think starters wise - we are good and don't have many question marks. After, there are many and that's the problem Wes Goodwin really has. https://www.espn.com/college-football/stats/team/_/view/defense/stat/total/table/passing/sort/totalPointsPerGame/dir/asc

I got over it many years ago. Dabo, 'manufactures adversity,' with closely managed attention. I found myself biting my fingernails up to the third knuckle while watching him do it. Game after game, year after year the drama he manufactured drew strong emotions from deep within me.
I believe we lost a couple mid-season games over that and I believe that might have been a part of UGA getting out of hand soon after halftime in our game with them this year. My consolation was Dabo's history of blowing teams away starting with the last couple regular season games and continuing through the post season.

attitude is based on 60 years experience with the doggone polls.
Why? Because I know dammmm well most of the AP poll voters wake up Sunday mornings with hangovers, stumble over to computers, look up scores, then cast votes. And the ones with the highest victory margins by racking up 40, 50 points or more, typically get the nod.
Secondly, anyone that doesn't believe the CFP Committee members aren't influenced by the polls, especially the AP polls, is fooling themselves.
Thirdly, go ask people like Spurrier or Switzer why they left starters in longer then Dabo does: for game experience...and to run up big numbers. They understood the polls, and like it or not, the voters haven't changed one iota in all these years!
I, too, understand Dabo's thinking and always defer to his judgment. But I never have liked our allowing garbage TD's period. Proof positive of my thinking: we now sit at #11 in the AP poll, dropping two spots, and that's because we allowed UVA (and the likes of NC State) to tack on sh*t TD's, then in State's case, brag about it!

Harry, I was stunned when the first playoff rankings were released and their polls were almost a photograph of the previous week's AP polls. It was heartbreaking to think that after all these decades of being told which team was better than another that I was going to continue the torture of media bias, writers and talking heads choosing their favorites and voting other teams out of the way.
That's not going to change. The SEC will remain between the sheets with ESPiN and every year will be the same after the same. Then they put two SEC teams in the PO's twice. Some things just shouldn't happen.
My ultimate consolation was that I believe the best team always came out on top (other than the covid year), IDK about that one. The change from the days when the AP chose the national champ by setting up some sacrificial lamb for the SEC to slaughter was over, THE END!
I see the polls here on Tnet when they come out. Polls are of no matter to me. As far as I'm concerned they have the same effect as a child's secret letter to Santa with a list of what it wants for Christmas and I'm not that child's daddy.
All I ever wanted for Christmas was a nation champion in which I believe was the best. In all but one year we got that. The NC teams earned their reward on the field and not in the minds of people who write or talk for a living.

when it’s an opponent with a pulse, his offense is weak. Very weak. He has never did anything against good defenses. B1G is garbage defense, exposed by UGA. Exposed again game 1 by UGA scoring a FG only.
Riley is not the guy. Wes might not be either but Riley was hired after he got exposed by UGA. The Riley family is truly overrated, completely overrated. They haven’t won jack crap and likely never will.
