Players that used to be snapped up by Tennessee in the region would never give Clemson the time of day. The year they won it all in 1998 was the year we went 3-8

I recall us, under Bowden, making them look foolish in the Oeach Bowl not Ling after that.

Tennessee recruited him hard when Kiffen was there for a year and even sent some girls down to Byrnes to try to convince him to be a Vol. And Kiffen told another Gamecock commit that he could go to SC and be a gas pumper or come to Tennessee. That was around the start of SC's "golden" years under Spurrier.

Like everything else it goes in cycles. In the 80's Danny Ford had the pick of top players from Western NC. After Ford, Tennessee and UNC started getting most of the top talent from that area and Clemson got very few if any top players while West was coach. Bowden made inroads back into the area, especially after Mack Brown went to Texas and Fulmer left Tennessee. Once Dabo took over, Clemson again began taking basically who they wanted from Western NC.

I think that's a bit of an oversimplification but it definitely helped that, for several years, TN, SC and all of the NC schools were pretty pathetic. Now that TN, UNC and even NC State, to a degree, are being operated competently it will indeed be tougher to pluck whoever we want out of those states like we were doing up until fairly recently.

I always thought that two basketball schools UNC and UCLA could get a competent coach to stay and not leave they could be powerhouses. Those two brands are well known worldwide

More likely Tennessee’s fall was due to Clemson’s rise.

ever had a NC team could make that claim. That doesn't make sense if you look at our NC teams. Imo the last NC team Clemson fielded had the absolute best and deepest defense in the history of college football. It would have tortured Peyton Manning and Tee Martin on their best day. It also had an offense who could have scored on any of the historical best.
The falling off of all those programs listed in the subject line had no bearing on how good Dabo has coached, recruited and trained. TL and that defense could and would have been as good as any of them.

I travel to Knoxville for business so I spend a lot of time around UT fans. It absolutely killed them when Tee and Amari choose Clemson over UT. When you talk to their fans, they still think the program playing at the same level it was in their hay day when Fat Phil was battling Spurrier for the top spot in the SEC. I was working in Knoxville the week they played UF and it was all the local news could talk about. I told some of the UT fans I work with that it was good to see the Vols playing better and for this game against UF to actually be relevant again. Of course the response I got was what do you mean this game has always been relevant. I had to remind him that it may have always been relevant to UT fans but it hasn’t been to the rest of the country for almost 2 decades. They are definitely legends In their own minds.

were all committed to Tennessee until Hunter Johnson flipped and brought Amari and Tee with him. But that’s not Clemson’s fault for being good at the time. That’s Tennessee’s fault for being a turd sandwich. Tennessee was already circling the drain when Clemson was already taking off.
