Will Ray Tanner be another King Dixon?

Like King, Ray is a beloved sports figure that was given the AD position. Will Ray's tenure be a disaster like King's was? This could be interesting!

i thought you knew, bryant. it don't matter if it's a coach, player, waterboy, cheerleader, or even sir big spur, they have someone alot better waiting in the wings. he/she just couldn't beat out the person they are better than, to get the starting spot, and i've never figured that out. they have the best coaches, but they have better players behind their starters and even better players behind them.coot logic at it's finest.

I don't think King had an administrative degree. And I KNOW he had no collegiate athletic administrative experience, much less big time success as a college coach.

cash. Maybe the differential is greater than in the past, but USC has always had lots of money to throw around. That's why they've gone out and hired former NC-winning coaches while we so frequently promote from within.

King Dixon took over when USC was at its lowest point.
Jul 14, 2012, 2:23 PM

|
He had very little to work with Metro for all sports but football. He did get USC in the SEC when the ACC told them no time and time again. I think the ACC should have taken them when they had the chance. USC is a natural fit in the ACC and has far more rival in the ACC than the SEC.

When we entered the SEC, yes, we had more rivals in the ACC. But that's not the case today. We have now been in the SEC longer than we were in the ACC. We are not a "natural" fit for the ACC. We are for the SEC. The ACC is basketball-first. South Carolina has a football-first mentality, like the SEC does.

empty one against anyone as well just as quickly). You'd be hard pressed to find another SEC school's fan base that has much passion for playing you guys. The ACC at least offered a little hate every once in a while.
Basketball is non-existent. The arena is a tomb for just about every game except Kentucky. I grew up in Columbia and remember some big atmospheres in the old coliseum. The SEC will never deliver on this unfortunately, and once the cycle works its way back around in football, well, you know the drill.

Look 90 miles south and you'll find plenty of hatred. We've always been a thorn in Uga's side and even with the upside down record it has grown worse since 1992. And you can look a little further south to Gainesville even though that hatred didn't start until we hired their former coach and Heisman winner. And look west towards Knoxville...absolutely hatred from that proud program that we've beat up on lately. And to Nashville...yeah it's just Vandy but they've beat a couple of Spurrier teams that added fuel to the fire.
Our rivalries in the SEC might not be as heated as the ones we had in the ACC, but they are there and there is some hatin going on. We've just always been the team that no one feared...but had to take seriously to beat.

I think you find plenty of passion with other SEC schools in playing us.
Georgia for one. Arkansas for some reason (I guess because we came in at the same time)
Tennessee seems to like to play us as well.
If we keep winning 8-9 games, more teams will find a passion to play us.

The BIG Difference of course- between King Dixon and Tanner
Jul 14, 2012, 3:56 PM
|
|
today is - Tanner has an athletic department budget of 80 million dollars and it's growing.
King Dixon was/is a very good man and was - I think- exactly what we needed at the time. But the University leadership held him back and wouldn't let him spend any money at all. The money he did spend, he had to get everything approved.
MUCH, MUCH different atmosphere at South Carolina now. It's a different world.

You are talking ancient history. Playing ACC teams no longer means anything special for Carolina fans. We have a great rivalry with Georgia, Florida and Tennesee now that we are beating them.
When the basketball team is doing well, people show up. But we have had to endure Odom and Horn. I stopped going to the games. I'm coming back now that we have Frank Martin. I'm excited about basketball again for the first time in over a decade.

need the numbers.
Of course you and SCAR Nation have a rivalry with those teams. That doesn't mean they have one with you. Spurrier is a different story, though. He's been the biggest touche' in college coaching in our generation. Those schools and fan bases hate Steve Spurrier, not SCAR.
But hey, you have Ray Tanner now to bring in the next chapter. Best wishes.

Rivalries and fan attendance develop when you win. Spurrier is winning. I believe that Frank Martin will eventually get it going too.

not according to their fans. all 3 of those schools feel the same way as clemson fans, that we should beat usuc every year. usuc fans need to realize that they have still not earned any respect amongst cfb fans. 3 years is not enough time to try and put usuc's football program into the same air as any of the schools that you mentioned. after 100+ years of mediocrity, a few good years changes nothing. usuc and the mississippi schools are about the same, with miss.state maybe being a little ahead.
