There were 9 teams who put up 45+ points. Only 2 of them allowed garbage points. Clemson is one of them. I have not looked at the depth charts on those other teams to find out how many players played, and probably won’t. But would be nice to know how the other teams put up 45+ points while keeping the other team in check.

We have some issues on defense. But no one wants to discuss it because then you're a Debbie downer... and people accuse you of not being able to just enjoy the games. Guess I'm different because I like football and sports discussions.
Anyway, I haven't watched the game over. It would be interesting to hear a defense tape breakdown. Even with the ones in. Bad thing is we won't face a good offense until Louisville. We can simply out talent the teams we play. I do know our overall team speed on D isn't like the last decade.

Yeah luckily the Tiger O looks up stoppable because the D has serious problems in the secondary.

I don’t think most people mind saying we have some issues on D. To reach a championship level, we do have to improve. The secondary should get better, I hope, by November. I remember when Wiggins was getting burned on a regular basis before he figured it out.
I just think those who complain about giving up 35 points to NC State are overly concerned. Sure, I wish we could have shaved a few points off, but we were playing 4th & 5th string guys against their best in the second half. In the long run, the experience our backups gained and the film the coaches got will pay off in the long run.

Clemsongalalways=Kelly Gramlich? Extensive sports knowledge. Great insight.
Kelly or not I don’t always agree with some of your takes but you have great thoughts. I think a fan board is supposed to be diverse opinions and thoughts as well. My pulse has suffered because I too will call out an issue when I see one. I haven’t been sold on Goodwin at all. He has taken elite talent and underperformed more often than not. I see the ridiculous Tampa II come out on third and long against elite QB’s and cringe every time. We tend to give up those 3rd and 17 in big games.
This years issues are competitive depth. Before Goodwin we had reserves that are nfl started today. We don’t have that anymore. That’s the difference between us and UGA. We didn’t have the horses to spell the starters and the starters got tired. Goodwin doesn’t have the exotic blitz packages that get home to the Qb either. Offenses know the linebackers are going to be the blitzes through the a and b gap. Easier to pickup when you know where it’s coming from.

Defense has not been dominant

I saw somewhere, that take out the garbage time points, our defense would be rated in the mid high 30's. That is OK, but only OK. I was hoping for a lot more dominance from our front 7. IMO opinion it has not been there. Please let me know thoughts. TY

The first team defensive rotation has been pretty good. I thought they had a great 1st half against UGA. Disappointed that we did not make adjustments or anticipate their adjustments.
We have not been great because I think we have lacked consistency. I think the talent is there. I also think we missed Woods Saturday. Outside of Terrel, the back end has had way too many guys out of position or using poor technique.
Lukus continues to underperform. Barrett finally played better Saturday. Hopefully that side of the ball developes some consistency and plays at higher level going forward.

We really don't learn much after halftime of the NCS game because of all the changes made to the lineup. Our D played pretty well in the 1H. Getting a couple of key players back will help. We need more pressure on the QB to help out our secondary, but they also need to come around in a few areas.
One of the downsides of getting big leads early is that you tend to lose some intensity and focus. Guys start celebrating early and just don't have the same targeted energy as they did at kickoff.
I'd like to see our starters in for most of the game against Stanford. I'd be fine if we build up enough of a lead to get others on the field in Q4, but I want to see more consistency at least through 3 quarters, particularly on D.

We only gave up 14 points untill the walkons came on to play. Yes glaring difference between starters and back ups but we will be fine.

2 things. First, Dabo said it was 52-14 when the starters were pulled early 3rd quarter. Would you be happy with giving up 28 with a full game of the starters? Second, their QB - freshman QB - was 8/9 to start the game. Will we be fine with that?
We have issues to work on with all of the D, not just the backups. To me it starts up front. Would like to see our DL be dominant and right now, they are occasionally at best.

Just like our rejuvenated offense it begins in the trenches
Our D-line play to date has been subpar
Where are the sacks , pressures , and TFL ?
All of these things have been the trademark of Clemson defenses in the past that made a run for championships. Secondary play becomes suspect when other units underperform.
Not that the secondary play has been stellar. That's certainly not the case. But there are a lot of moving parts to consider.
But we have guys that have flashed. Hampton immediately comes to mind. We will be fine by seasons end when we will face stiffer competition
But right now the onus is on Eason and Rumph to get better play from their guys.

The Wolfpack had 210 (21pts) yards of offense in the fourth quarter. Most of that was from both teams sending in the reserves. This shows, to me, that we aren’t real deep. Playing these reserves as much as possible will build the depth we will need later in the season

really pushed the creative aspect yet with disguises and blitzes. There's some younger / less experienced guys throughout so getting as many live snaps as possible in base packages is likely helping everyone mature faster and gain confidence for the long season ahead. Blowing the doors off of your opponents on Offense early certainly helps facilitate this.
Our schedule sets up well for playing the long game, and over his tenure that's kind of been Dabo's MO.
