I like J. Johnson @ Safety, but not so much on Special teams

The picture on the home page of the Bama player running back the kick with Jadar Johnson in the background is fitting. He was personally responsible for many of the big kick returns we gave up last year. You frequently saw the coverage guy at the top of the screen (#18) losing lane integrity (ie. giving up the outside, over-running the play, etc.). I didn't understand why he'd mess up and then the coaches would trot him right back out there. I was hoping they'd replace him with somebody like R. Carter (who was mainly recruited as a Special teams standout) who I felt would have upgraded the unit, but it never happened. Hopefully, this year they make the switch or spend a lot of time coaching that young man up.

Thumbs up for the substantive breakdown. With pics, even!
Exactly what I saw when I went back and fast-forwarded through the DVR recordings...pretty much all year. (I'd say "cut-ups" to sound more pretentious but I didn't actually make any.)
Our punt coverages/returns were even goofier. Our gunners seem to have no idea of how to get off a block, whereas going the other way, I'm not entirely certain we actually blocked an opposing gunner all year long. It was sort of a contest, it seemed, to see who could whiff on blocks the worst, because it always seemed like there were a half-dozen guys surrounding our fielder - I don't say "returner", because we haven't actually had a punt return in the last two years - every time he caught the ball.
Our ST's were so bad they make Baby Jesus cry. Or at least Andre Powell. The man may not have recruited, ever, and I think he's still somewhere out there on Lake Hartwell catching a fish, but he could flat-out coach him some special teams.
Hopefully if we clean that stuff up our window is still open. It's not like it's rocket science; we just weren't doing it well for whatever reason.
STINKS that we had to lose a national title that way. I think that one will still sting 10 years from now.

it certainly didn't look like we blocked an opposing teams gunners a single time all season.

Tank missed the tackle on that play and also had a blown coverage. People still blow smoke up his a$$. He has had some big plays but those 2 cost us the game. Baker missing that tackle on their last drive killed us as well. We need help at CB!! Just sayin. Had to get that out. Jadar is a fine player imo

Wrong, it was alignment. It wasn't anyone player...

On our kickoffs all year, we kicked to one side and aligned where 8 players were concentrated in a smaller area, which left a lot of room for kick returners to cut back to their left and have a lot of space to run. We were lucky that we gave up only 2 returns for a TD, with how bad the alignment was.
