Riley!! Riley had a 17 point lead and it disappeared. He has no responsibility to adjust to defense snd keep the pressure on ??? Just go stale and quit running the offense seems like a good way to lose momentum and the lead. And that’s what happened.
What was the offense doing while they came back to tie the score ??? Were they playing to win on offense, or not to lose on offense. It’s obvious to everyone but some keep their eyes closed.
Can offense not continue to play and try to score or is that on Goodwin as well ???
Both have trouble making adjustments. Both need to be better, no doubt.
Riley is as much of the problem when a lead is given up all while this Clemson offense goes in the tank. Both need each other to perform at a higher level in this playoff, a lot better

IMO Mafah being so banged up really limits the play calling. I would have liked to see Cade carry the ball more in the second half.

Playing a banged up running back is a huge issue with Garret Riley!!!
He is playing an injured guy, thus limiting an offense. That is not Goodwins fault, that’s a major issue with our offensive coaching.
Clemson only has 1 capable running back who isn’t able to play hard due to injury??? That is the very definition of a huge problem

Consider this possibility. Maybe the second half plan was to run Haynes a lot to run the clock like you want to do when you have a lead. He ran pretty well in the first half and it looked like they were going to run him more than Mafah. Haynes gets hurt on the opening kickoff of the second half. That probably wasn’t part of the second half plan and now you have to a.) run Mafah more, b.) pass the ball more, or c.) run either Cade or your third string RB more. I was hoping we were going to pass the ball more and we did some but not enough IMO.

Yep, another offensive problem that is responsibility of Riley, not Wes.
Offense is to blame as much as offense!

Teams have adjusted to what we were doing the first half of the year but we just keep right on doing it. We aren't talented enough to line up and run the exact plays the defense expects us to run and succeed.

Yes, some upgrades to the offensive game plan is needed.
Offense needs to adjust to defense as much as the defense to the offense. People acting like it’s only 1 direction are not able to comprehend football

The offense has actually improved this year. Particularly the offensive line. And when the offense has generated points, the defense has allowed the other team to get them right back. The offense is not perfect, or kicking on all cylinders, but it also doesn’t have the depth of talent as the defense does. No excuse for the defense giving up as much as it does. It has been a consistent drop off since Venables left. Time to get it back to playing big boy football.

Offense improved yes, agree. But why stop trying to score if this improvement is true ??? Just tell the defense to get right back out there lol. How sad is that to not even attempt an aggressive play but to just cowher and crumble instead of rise to the occasion sometimes.
A 24-7 lead was given up for more than just 1 reason. Offense did what during that time ???? Oline did NOTHING to open lane for our banged up running back. Playcalls are plain and simple to stop, no wrinkles. Yes we are playing a RB that is hurt because apparently nobody on offense trust the other guys. What does that say about our OC Riley ?? No other RB can play or what ??

65th in the country, while offensively were to 20. No doubt the offense has issues but Is take them over the defense every time. Some of it has to do with the fact the offense has improved over the last few years, while the defense is getting worse.

App State inflation. It was 42-0 before defense even gave up a 1st down. Lol. Defense had 3rd string on field in first half. Offense stayed aggressive and look what happened.
Offense might be better but against high level competition it’s still not that good. Georgia and Coots allowed 17 points total in 8 quarters. Those are by far the best teams Clemson played. Texas is right there with Georgia, something’s gotta change

and I were talking about this issue. The question was if last night's game was on the line, who would you rather have on the field, defense or offense? Need a score, or need a stop. We all agree there is more confidence offense could get it done before the defense could get the stop. Offense gets stagnant and that needs to change but I have zero faith in the defense at crunch time.

lol maybe. But fire Goodwin does not help offense from going cold-turkey late in games.
Offense in 4th quarter this year is anemic. Anemic I tell ya

Usually when we go conservative to protect a lead we use Mafah and a lot of short passes. We didn’t have a run game so we threw it a lot and actually threw it downfield. We just didn’t capitalize.

It didn’t work, exactly my point. The defense did not work obviously but the offense was just as terrible. Execute is needed from both units, not just one.

Tried but failed to execute. The defense tried too but they also did not execute.
The blame is as much Riley as Goodwin, obviously.

Oh totally agree. Sark is an offensive genius and will throw the kitchen sink at us. My fear is he has 2 weeks to prepare and throw new wrinkles in that porkchop will either not be able to adjust to or will wait till after halftime to adjust. Defensively they are big and fast. Running a hurt running back up the middle 20 times will not help us score nor give our defense time to rest.

Just do not consistently play well on both sides of the ball. If the O could stay on the field I feel our defense may look somewhat better, but not totally convinced the D is playing as good as it can even if the O stayed on the field.
IMO you have got to play a healthy RB. If we do not have any one better than an injured Mafah than we need some changes in that room.

Exactly. Playing injured players on offense does not help the defense. Wes should be mad about that lol, but he expects Riley to handle it. I don’t get. Just hang it all of the defense late is a flawed strategy when you basically stop executing an offensive gameplan

Uh, Clemson and nobody else. Are you serious with this crsp ?? Yes comebacks happen but my issue is complaining about Wes when the offense has every chance to also score the ball as well. The offense plays tentative and puts injured players out there to execute. It doesn’t work. Then you expect the defense just to casually stop the opponent after 3 plays and out. Over and over.

A wide open slant vs. SC and then had a wide open T.J. Moore but threw to double covered Antonio Williams with 5 minutes to go in the game. 1st down there and one more SMU never recovers. Game Over

Unless your OC decides to stop calling plays that might actually succeed. I mean those 4ty quarter possessions were incompetent on both sides.
Offense has no obligation to stop scoring do they ??

Is it’s Goodwins fault when linebacker falls down or corner slips trying to make a play ???
What lunacy is this argument. Offense stops executing winning plays, period. Defense is on the field too quickly due to offense not staying with an approach to keep scoring. SMU has talent and defense holding for 4 quarters is tough ask. Offense however could keep aggressive because that secondary was toast but Cade missed throws and playing injured RB is bad idea. Doesn’t help Goodwin
Neither coordinator makes plays so come with something better. Offense goes stale and you know it but want to try some new fangled defense of Riley lol.

Those two botched kick off returns put Riley and the offense in a really bad spot both times. Had we just fair caught both balls, Haynes would be healthy and we would have had better field position and been more aggressive on offense. It’s really ironic that we won on a field goal, because the rest of our special teams was not up to par.

Funny that after all the kickoff/punt return issues Clemson has had, that a new guy in Adam Randall returns the ball across the 40 and gives the offense a chance....and they get it done along with special teams.
