On field guys were all hired by Franklin.

No, Tom Allen did not choose his defensive assistant coaches at Penn State. When he was hired as defensive coordinator in December 2023, the existing defensive position coaches—such as Anthony Poindexter (co-defensive coordinator/safeties), Terry Smith (associate head coach/defensive recruiting coordinator/cornerbacks), and Deion Barnes (defensive line)—were retained from the previous staff under Manny Diaz. There is no evidence that Allen hired or brought in new on-field defensive assistant coaches during his one-year tenure in 2024. He did, however, bring his son Thomas Allen as a defensive analyst and analytics coordinator, but analysts are support staff rather than assistant coaches.

The whole Riley and Allen didn’t get to hire their guys is a lazy take. Coordinators almost never get to hire the assistants unless the previous coordinator got a head coaching job somewhere and took assistants with them.
