Some of my fondest memories as a child were listening to your Dad call Clemson games.

We are spoiled today with our ability to watch all of the games, but back in the day I depended on your Dad to paint a picture with his elegant description of the action on the field of my beloved Tigers.

He is truly missed.

I'll mention him. Younger fans have no idea who he was, but he was literally the voice, and face of Clemson athletics for all those years before every game being on TV. Calling the games, hosting coaches shows, speaking at Touchdown Clubs or off season Clemson events. Still the only PBP announcer I know of to call 4 sports: football, baseball, men's and women's basketball

and we had some great chats and visits due to my position with "The Tiger" newspaper and as head of the S.C. Collegiate Press Association.

Knowing him made his broadcasts even more vivid, as I could put a face and personality to each. I think one of the most touching tributes, following his death, was Clemson inviting Bob Fulton, longtime announcer for The Gamecocks, to call a series during one of our home games, then allowing Bob to continue on for a good while, as he and Jim had been great friends. It was difficult to keep a dry eye, listening to that broadcast.

For many of us older folks, there will remain one and only one of the "Voice of The Tigers," and that will be Jim...I can still hear his voice as clearly now as I did for so many years.

May he continue to rest in peace, and God bless his family and friends.

a series during the game was my idea. We were going to have him speak at the funeral but it just kind of came to me, why not have him call a series? Bob hadn't called a game in 9 years and was nervous as all get out, but he was flawless as Whitehurst led them down the field to a TD. My favorite memory of that entire time is all the Clemson fans in front of the radio booth with their radios tuned in not watching the game, but rather watching and listening to Bob Fulton call a Clemson game. It was perfect!

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

a whole lot of people would tune in for his broadcast.

Even had some Gamecock friends of mine here in Columbia tuning in to listen with virtually all believing it was quite moving, especially considering the rivalry.

Even to this day, when I think of Clemson and/or South Carolina broadcasts, two names come to mind: Jim and Bob.

as dad described it, they had a strange friendship, as they only saw each other a few times a year due to their jobs. But they worked across from each other until Bob retired in 1994 for 26 years. When both went to the CWS, they worked together. Dad arranged for Bob to be honored at his last game at Clemson in 1994, and Bob returned the favor posthumously in 2003 and I had the honor of receiving the award on the field in Columbia prior to 63-17

Your dad and Mike Eppley were my favorite pairing. I remember as a kid tuning the game on our portable am radio and pulling it around the street in a wagon so I could listen while I played football in our front yard or the neighbors yard. On the rare occasion when I listen on the radio these it is definitely not as enjoyable.

I still distinctly remember when I found out that he passed away just as vividly as I remember haring about 9/11 and some other big news things when I was young.

I was going to math class at my middle school in the middle of the day and our math teacher was a Clemson fan (at my school in Anderson we had a mixture of Clemson, Gamecock, UGA fans) and he told me and my Clemson friend just before class while we were in the hallway "Boys, Jim Phillips just passed away."

And even though I was only 12 at the time I knew the importance of that. Your dad made an impact even on me as a 12 year old just by listening to him on the radio.

Jim Philips was the best. He truly loved Clemson. I still remember the day he passed away. I went to college with his son so I got a chance to meet Jim Philips. It’s too bad Phillips along with some of the other great ones have passed away or retired. Just to name a few; Bob Fulton - Gamecocks, Woody Durham-NC, Larry Munson UGA, Ellie Gold- Alabama. Network announcers Verne Lundquist. Joe Buck, Curt Gowdy, Keith Jackson , Al Michaels, Pat Summerall, #### Enberg, , Jim McKay, A John Madden and several
Others who should be on this list.

But IMO Jim Phillips was one the best. He was Clemson sports.
