That play call hasn't worked since Grisham's been the WR coach. On paper it seems the play should work considering you'd have a 230 lbs monster in Randall as the lead blocker. Unfortunately though, Cade gets the ball out slow, the other WRs get blown up and the play fails every time. Considering Moore and Wesco both have to do some more work to do in developing their upper body, I don't see them as being elite blockers as Freshman. I say just scrap the play.

Don’t get your hopes up. It’s a big part of all modern offenses. It’s an extension of the run game and they use it when numbers aren’t in their favor in the box. If they’re trying to get ahead of the sticks but the defense has 7 in the box, they use the screen and if they get like 5 yards it’s a successful call. It isn’t supposed to be a home run play every time.

I'd take 5 yds. We don't even get that most of the time.

Don’t get me wrong… how the coaches view the play vs how we execute it are two different things lol. Perimeter blocking has been a problem for half a decade.

And don't throw them the ball when it is obvious that they are going to be hit as soon as they touch the ball. Seen that too many times lately. Lucky there have been no pick 6 plays when that happens.

That’s an area Cade needs to improve. Throw away or tuck and run. Meaning make better decisions.

Yeah our perimeter blocking has been one of the biggest problems in our offense. Defenders run right past blockers on the outside almost every time.

I wouldn't mind it if we had Randall and brinngstool block and we throw to AW0 or Tyler or the 2 new guys. I feel like the might could work but you know when we have Troy stellato and Cole Turner out there blocking it'll never work.

Talking about Stellato's blocking, go to min 20:21 on this video. This is against Charleston Southern, not a UGA or Bama. Yikes! https://youtu.be/ejpLlQETWx4?t=1221

the way we've run it I wouldn't even call it a play. It's more like a wasted down.

Each time we run it I am waiting for the Pick 6. My bet is that it is the first play run from scrimmage on 8-31

the freshmen WRs should be starting day 1

if they don't. the screens will still happen and UGA will get at least 1 pick 6 or fumble off of them
if Wesco and Moore play from the start, they will show how the play is still good and if you are high talent it's a bread and butter play
the Clemson WR room post Jeff Scott leaving is as bad as it gets. two 5 star QBs have failed miserably because the Grisham room is so bad.
Dabo is coaching TJ personally because he knows TJ is gone if Grisham coaches him.
fyi - Cam Colman and Cortez Mills would have been a Clemson Tigers if Grisham was not the WR coach. He's just not personable and is very weird A type with no credit or actual inspiration... Wesco is here because of Garret Riley and Dabo. Grisham is gone after this season too. But Dabo is giving him a gentlemens exit

No chance. We just have to hope we don't use it as much. It's actually a good play if we are more creative most of the other time and just go to it here are there. Recently they know we can't stretch the field, so they just crowd the line. That play goes nowhere.

I disagree. It just comes down to blocking

If an opposing team is going to stack the box, you have got to be able to run WR screens
The answer is not stop taking advantage of numbers and stop trying to get the ball into space.
You have got to recruit, train and develop WR’s that can block to run WR screens.
If you get one on 2 situations on the perimeter, you have got to be able to run effective WR screen plays. Otherwise, what's the penalty for stacking the box??? These are basic fundamentals that you can not avoid. If you can't do it, you just aren't going to be a good offensive football team.
I sit in the stands a listen to people complain “why to we run it up the middle?” it's the same thing and I just shake my head

Agreed. The coaches always say, “we take what the defense gives us…”
That’s true, but sometimes they make the defense give them something by running it up the middle, or throwing perimeter screens to get what we really want.

passes. At least not for us. It must have worked really well once upon a couple of decades ago, but we do not seem able to execute it very well for a gain these days. We get blown up behind the line of scrimmage a lot of the time we try it.

Why don't we talk about execution and perimeter blocking instead of removing a key set of plays that are critical to keeping opposing teams from stacking the box on you

We used to have WR's that could block for it.

Ditto for TE's like Leggett.
Not so much, lately.
We should use it less, but opportunistically. RB motion to the opposite side could help.

I'm tired of seeing tall slow wide receivers at TE
We need guys that can lay a block and then catch a pass

The screen can be an effective weapon if used in balance with the running game and deep & mid-range passing. It's a coaching issue.
As for Moore and Wesco, TJ Moore is 198 lbs. While Wesco is 182 lbs, Bama's Devonta Smith played his career at Bama at 170 lbs & under achieving Consensus All-American, the Biletnikoff Award, the Maxwell Award, SEC Offensive Player of the Year, the Heisman Trophy, and Walter Camp Player of the Year Award. Smith durably caught 117 passes in 2020 with plus-20 TD's.
Moore and Wesco can really help the Tigers in 2024 if coached up quickly. Let's get it Tigers!

The play call is not the issue. If we execute correctly it will work.

Assuming facts not in evidence. Every year is different. And a play that doesn’t work MUST also be called occasionally to keep the defense honest.

That play either gains 2 yards or loses 2 yards and you have a greater chance of getting a WR injured.

Hopefully with some faster receivers the D backs will have to play off of the ball more. This will help with the blocking.

Bench WR who won't block.
Start a walk-on if you have to.
Eventually they will get the message and the play will work.
And it's a changeup to defeat the blitz.
If it works occasionally or makes the defense play honestly it's been successful.
It's our WR who refuse to block who are the problem.
