that we do not have the across the board talent that the final 4 have. We can’t set the edge, we can’t stop the run, our punter is inferior, we don’t have an elite running back that can turn the corner, our depth is non-existent. It is a combination of things imho - lack of nil, poor recruiting, not using the portal, not having a fiery DC, etc. Will the upcoming personnel changes solve those issues and if so how long before we become elite again?

I agree coaching is a part of it but we do not have the same level of talent, especially depth, that we did before.

Sure, agree. But to the OPs point, we don’t have the same level of talent and depth that the top teams did this year. We aren’t that far off, but we have some obvious holes in multiple places. Improved coaching will address some of that but we need to improve recruiting.

Our depth on defense was/is a HUGE problem. It is definitely not all on coaching and if we don't get some solid defensive protal players you are going to see them struggle again next year even under new coaching

Agreed. Certainly Dabo knows the issues and is capable of fixing all that. The questions are, will he make the wholesale and tough decisions that are required to play at the upper echelon level of the new college football landscape, and will the fanbase and admin give him the time to get it done. At this point, it won’t be a quick fix. Too much damage has been done.
Just my opinion. I’m still a Dabo supporter, but never a Dabo pumper. I try to live in the realm of reality. One of my favorite quotes, “Praise and criticism together, are often seen as unstable. But in a healthy debate, one cannot exist without the other.”

We could use a couple more pieces to shore things up, but I think we had enough talent to make the final four if not win it all. I think Dabo is making the right moves now to correct the problem. We have a young team. We’ll be back.

that we could compete with any team still in it!! Yes...there are definitely areas to be fixed, and some gaps to be filled, but we are not far from being elite. I will trust the coach to get things fixed. He is already making changes and adapting to the new landscape.

We had one of the most dominant dynasties in the history of college football. It’ll be near impossible to keep that up.
Best dynasties: Alabama under Saban 2008-2023 Nebraska 94-97 Miami late 80s FSU 80s-90s bc of consistency of Top 5 final rankings Alabama under Bear Bryant Clemson 2015-2019 Miami in the early 2000s Oklahoma when they won 35+ straight games

Especially the back 7 on defense. Safties and linebackers seem small and not as athletic as in the past. They seem to make contact 3 yard down the field and then complete the tackle 5-7 yards later. Hopefully a good off-season in the weight room helps out.

I'm not a big believer that the weight room is to be all end all answer. You can lift all the weights you want, but when somebody just simply got a bigger frame than you, you're still a disadvantage.

I think I accidentally flagged you so I’ll give you some TU’s to counter.
In reply, I think weight training will help, but I was astounded at the poor tackling technique, poor alignment and angles taken, and poor strategy in our games this season. These points are what disappointed me most about Wes’ defense. I think he is a good analyst, but he doesn’t know the basics of on- field execution.

This is what frustrated me most… Iv never seen a lb/secondary group take such bad angles on guys. A remember a handful of runs that at worst should have been big 15-20 yard runs and pushed OB but our guys take terrible angles and look super slow to the sideline and the just run by us… def something that needs to be addressed

Exactly. I like the Sellers kid as a player. I watched him play at South Florence. But a Venables coached defense would have had him on his a$$ in the backfield on a lot of those runs, and the secondary would not be grabbing him around the neck and shoulders to try to tackle him at full speed.
Wes was probably a great asset to BV, but it’s a whole lot different running the show yourself.

I get the idea but it is about what have you done lately. In 21, we were 6th in recruiting with 2 players that were 5 star and they will both be gone. From 22-25 we have only a single 5 star and have gone from 10th to 15th to 22nd and now 50th in recruiting. You can take the blame the coach line, but the blame is is in a drop off in recruiting not on field coaching. All you have to do is drafts and the All ACC over the last few years and you see what has happened.

There’s no issue with talent, maybe depth but not talent. The recruiting is fine and isn’t ranked 50th. 27 th this year in recruiting and as always inside the top 10 in average player rating. The issue is discipline and coaching especially on defense. Dabo will address those issues. There are more 4 and 5 star players on this team than there was on either championship team.

I think we had talent issues at DE opposite of Parker. I am not sold on Woodaz at LB either.

Agreed. Woodaz is a safety playing LB. Add in a 4/2/5 scheme with Carter and you basically don’t have enough size/strength to help support a very shaky DE setting the edge. Even Parker needs to improve on run support. Sub in Brown and now atleast you got size and speed at LB. They need to find an experienced SAM linebacker from the portal in the spring. Move Woodaz to safety to be like a Tanner Muse athlete at that size.

Tackles can be a misleading stat. If your ###### DL, which honestly with the run our DL was, your LB and Safeties will have a bunch more tackles. Far from ideal

No, our talent may not be as premier or as deep as during our championship runs, but we had enough talent to be a final four team this year.
On defense, we lacked strategy and technique. On offense we lacked a quality running back behind Mafah plus we made occasional predictable (if not mind boggling) calls in key situations (4th & 1’s, goal line offense). On special teams, we had no game whatsoever. We were one of the bottom 5 or 10 teams in the country there.
I’ve said several times before that good high school teams are far better on special teams than we are. How can we let that happen? Field position is essential, and we lose that battle almost every game.
All of these issues are coaching issues. I have faith in Dabo to straighten it out.

Agree w OP. We don’t have that elite talent we use to and don’t have the depth because dabo doesn’t really like to use the portal. Thats why we have seen our program go backwards for over last 5 years. Facts

Those are not facts just because you declare them to be so. They are your opinions, and you are entitled to them no matter how wrong they may be. I stated my own opinions in others posts in this thread. We could use more talent, but we had enough.

Fact is we don’t have the booster money to compete in the free for all that is NIL+portal. Not with the likes of Ohio State, Notre Dame, Texas, Oregon etc. these are the teams that will be competing for the title every year. Unless and until there’s some mechanism in place to equalize NIL spending, the days of schools like Clemson being able to build a program through several solid recruiting classes and a culture are over.
