I have some beefs with "four down territory" and such....

So someone shed some light:

On or about the opponent's forty, and fourth and long - say, five yards - seems everyone goes for it instead of the punt.

A good punter and good coverage, you ought to pin them at the ten or inside the ten EVERY time. yet no one does this much. Not Dabo or anybody, college or pro.

I see punts go up and the punt returner "Fools" the coverage team like he's going to catch it and it bounces into the endzone. I don't understand this. It's a short, high kick most of the time, and the coverage can get down there and even catch the ball themselves a lot of the time. But yet they watch it bound into the EZ as if they could do nothing about it. Even on a long bounce, the coverage guys are thee in plenty of time and should be right there to block it.

Most punters are good enough to kick it 30 or 35 yards, high in the air, to allow this.

Summary: punt the ball on fourth and long, cover the thing with common sense put them at the ten yard line (on average),and put your D out there to do their job.

What gives?

“Most punters” wasn’t our punter…

Statistics are not on your side. What you say is easy statistically is not.

This is a bad take. It's really simple. Offenses are hyper efficient now. The analytics favor going for it in that situation every time.

Classic football involves controlling the clock, playing for field position, and keeping offenses in front of you. That no longer works. With the new rule changes, it's not a game of inches any more, and you have to take advantage of scoring opportunities. No matter how good your defense, you can't stop a great offense. Look at what Ohio State did against our great defense in 2020. That's football now.

Additionally, the odds of pinning them every time, even with NFL punters, are low. And when you get touchbacks, you just gave up a chance for points in exchange for 15 yards.
