I fell into the vaping trap after smoking 30 years. Its hard to get out!

I started smoking in 1979 and quit in 2017. Well, switched to vaping. It was supposed to be short term to break the habit. Fast forward to 2025 and I was vaping more than I ever smoked. I decided enough is enough! I started nicotine patches and gum two days ago. I’m so irritable I can’t stand myself. Prayers for me as I can’t really remember life without nicotine. Heck most of those years I also dipped Copenhagen.

The vapes are easier access. I never smoked in my home or car. Vaping doesn’t stink up a place like cigarettes so I found myself vaping constantly. I was smoking around one pack of cigarettes per week. That’s not a lot but I was dipping a can of Copenhagen every day. That’s a ton of nicotine.

Y’all pray for an older man as he tries to get this monkey off his back. I’m an addiction expert (psych major and clinical psych) and I’m not taking my own advice well! 🤣

It is because it’s readily available everywhere. You can vape in public by holding it in and no one can tell. It’s safer but not truly safe. I’m done with it though. These patches aren’t helping much but are kinda keeping me almost sane.

Vaping does not cause lung cancer, the oils burn at less than 200 degrees, meaning they are noncarcinogenic. But they will up your nicotine use, absolutely a trap if you are trying to quit smoking. Oral supplements, or the patch are the way to go, that and some willpower.

There are cancer causing chemicals and it is believed, but not absolute fact yet, that vaping can lead to lung cancer. What is known for sure is that it can lead to heart and lung disease as well pulmonary fibrosis. There are cancer causing chemicals in vapes though.

You can do it.

I never considered myself a smoker but I chewed a few acres of Red Man. In 2010 I gave it up and that was one of the most difficult and rewarding things I’ve ever done. I was a snarling SOB for about a month and it was probably a year before I returned to normal. Or whatever normal is for me. I wouldn’t have wanted to be one of my employees or one of my family members during the first month. After a few months I bought myself a Mustang convertible (which I still have) and I’m sure the over the last 15 years I’ve saved enough money to pay for it at least once.

Hang in there. Keep the faith. You can do this.

Try Smokey Mountain Snuff. It helped me stop a 45 year Skoal addiction. 1-2 cans a day for 45 years. I tried to stop cold turkey, with Chantix, with Wellbutrin and couldn’t do it. The nicotine free dip settled the physical habit. The chemical side took willpower but with a physical substitute, I did it. Free fior the past 8 years.
Give it a try.

I was a smoker for 20+ years, tried numerous times to quit, and always failed. I resigned myself to the fact, I was going to smoke until the day it killed me. The company, I worked for offered the Smoke Enders service for free, so what the heck, I've tried everything else. Four weeks later, I stopped smoking and haven't had a coffin nail since.

Best of luck to you in quitting. You can do it.
There's a lot of info out there saying that ecigarettes and/or vapes are not as bad for you as regular cigarettes. That may be true, but then again it might not be. There's just not the long term history yet. One concern is that vapes do not use a vapor as the name implies, but it is in fact an aerosol. And that aerosol contains all kinds of stuff in addition to the nicotine and flavorings. Stuff like benzene, lead, and formaldehyde among others - particularly if the ecig device has been modified, or if someone uses unregulated e-liquid.
Hope you see it through!

It's just a habit, and You, with God's help, are stronger than it is!!! Get rid of every sign of it in your home and just STOP! I know, because I did it!!!! After a period of time, you will be surprised how you really don't miss it, and how glad you are that you quit!!

My method of quitting was to switch from cigarettes to joints. I went from about 30 or 40 cigs every day to just 3 or 4 joints.
I realize that I am still smoking so I use carbon filters that I get from Moose Labs to reduce the tar etc. The very best sleep
aid I have ever tried too...Doc

Dipped a can of Copenhagen a day. I set a date to quit and went cold turkey. It took a month to really get over it but I did it. If I had to do it again I would go see your doctor and ask for whatever drug he would recommend to help. If possible try to pick a time when life is less stressful. It will improve after 7-10 days. Good luck. Praying for you.

I tried chantrix but I had terrible side effects. I had ridiculous vivid dreams and they were frightening! I’ve got this though! Three days in and the patches and gum are holding. I’m still craving and looking for my vape. My wife thinks it’s funny to see me digging around my recliner. But she’s proud!

Try On! nicotine pouches, they are the best oral supplement, got me off vaping immediately, and did not stay on the supplement long enough to make that habit. They are also dirt cheap.

Nicotine is actually good for you, helps with cognitive function, prevents Alzheimer’s, really lots of studies out there that back that up. It’s the delivery method that’s bad for you and the other toxins. Vapes are terrible for you because all the juice and gas station vape shop ones come from China and are full of poisons.

Pouches, gum and lozenges are just delivering the nicotine and have no harmful side effects, especially if healthy (does elevate heart rate).

I agree 100%. I’ve read all the studies. There’s not enough information on the vaping method to form a real conclusion yet. The ones from China are horrible. The flavor is amazing but there’s zero oversight.

There is enough information that low amounts can be beneficial. Gum, pouches, and patches are the only delivery method deemed safe.

Good for you. Praying for your strength as I know how difficult this can be. Both of my parents smoked for over 40 years and both died way too young from emphysema. If your will power starts to wane, think of your kids and grandkids if you have any. They want to keep you around as long as possible. Even if you are a grumpy old guy. Keep fighting, brother.
