(with whom many on this forum are familiar) is a long-time college football radio host, and he has speculated on the eventual formation of a 32-team college football super conference. Theoretically, this would include the nations top 32 teams. Of course, there is a significant element of subjectivity since any such list would be subject to change on a routine basis. That said, the list of teams he includes/excludes is very interesting.
According Greg Swaim, the SEC will have just one exclusion from a proposed 32-team super conference: Vanderbilt. Any 32-tean super conference that includes the Coots doesn't sound like much of a super-conference to me. There is NO WAY they are one of the top 32-teams in the nation. Even in a 64-team super conference, they'd be one of the last 16 to get in IMO.
The Big Ten would lose six schools: Indiana, Maryland, Illinois, Purdue, Rutgers, and Northwestern.
Syracuse, Duke, Wake Forest, Boston College, Stanford, Cal, and SMU would be the cut ACC schools.
ASU, TCU, Baylor, Houston, and Cincinnati would be the Big 12 teams left behind.
Thoughts?

I think we all see where college football is headed. Different numbers have been thrown out there, but this is the first I've heard of only 32. If it is only 32 teams it would be a perfect way to install a relegation and promotion process. Bottom 4 of the 32 drop a level, top 4 from everyone else gets promoted.
Top 32 - I'm basing on recent success, let's say the last 10 years or so. Power 5 or major independents
List includes best winning percentage (since 2015) of teams from power 5 and major independents (teamrankings.com) 1. Alabama 2. Ohio St 3. Clemson 4. Georgia 5. Oklahoma 6. Michigan 7. Notre Dame 8. LSU 9. Washington 10. Penn St 11. Iowa 12. Oklahoma St 13. Wisconsin 14. Oregon 15. Utah 16. USC 17. Texas A&M 18. FSU 19. NC State 20. Florida 21. Miami 22. Texas 23. Minnesota 24. Washington St 25. Kansas St 26. Ole Miss 27. Tennessee 28. Kentucky 29. West Virginia 30. Pitt 31. Auburn 32. Michigan St.
Next 32 SMU Miss St Louisville UNC Wake VA Tech Stanford Missouri Northwestern Baylor Iowa St UCLA Duke Texas Tech Cal Boston College South Florida South Carolina Maryland Virgina Indiana Purdue Syracuse Arkansas GA Tech Nebraska Arizona Colorado Oregon St Illinois Vanderbilt Rutgers
I wouldn't mind it. Problem with any super league is how does it impact the other 100 or so programs? Does the interest die?
Edit: I may have missed a few teams that recently moved to the big 12.

Teams like App State, James Madison, and Georgia Southern all rank higher than Wake. Even if you weed-out all of the mid-majors and non-P4 teams, Wake would still be well short of the top 32.
Here are the top 32:
Michigan Ohio State Alabama Notre Dame Oklahoma Boise State Texas USC Penn State Nebraska Florida State Tennessee Georgia LSU Miami (FL) Florida Auburn Clemson Washington Texas A&M Virginia Tech Arizona State Michigan State Utah West Virginia Wisconsin UCLA Georgia Tech BYU Oregon Arkansas Pittsburgh

Thanks for the research but not really my point -- Wake was a bad example on my part. Point being, winning percentage is a less meaningful metric than viewership. Nebraska isn't in that top 32 but they are top 20ish for viewership since 2014. The Huskers are not getting left out of the mix.

That works if you want NFL-lite.
But I think the downsides (kicking teams/entire regions to the curb) would damage the overall product long term. That might already have been done to be honest, but I don't know that a 32 team super league will recapture the charm of the regionality that attracted a lot of us to college ball in the first place. *shrugs* I could be wrong but I'm bear-ish on the future of college ball.

There will LOTs of lawsuits if any of that happens. I feel this is the beginning of the death of college football. Unless there are massive changes to NIL and Transfer portal.

I've always thought 64 was the magic number. 4 16-team leagues split into 8-team divisions. Play each division opponent and then fill in from the other division or outside if that.

Well. Stanford doesn’t make sense. They own more combined (all sports) national championships than just about any other school. If recent performance is the gauge, maybe they deserve the hammer. However, NCAA has 90 championships yearly and while foot ball and basketball are the most lucrative, many other sports also bring in big money.
I hope it never happens. Espn already has a monopoly on college football. They own espn and Fox. Meaning they control the SEC and B1G. Funny thing is that neither the SEC or B1G are top ten in combined national championships. Not even close. The PAC 12 were the royalty. It’s all about believing the narrative ESecPN is spoon feeding you. I do t believe the sec and B1G are the premier leagues. Even football championships show the ACC ahead of the B1G. However, espn never deals in facts. It’s subjective narrative that the sec is a god and everyone else isn’t. Not buying the kool-aid.

Would be awesome if they had a 32-team league with relegation to second division for bottom 5-6 teams.

The ACC would be wise to initiate this type of set-up within.

Division back up with a high echelon and lower echelon mix in that sport and keep the rest more local. We could lead the way, but instead it's a reactionary flail. Missed opportunities abound.
