After seeing Va Tech and GT win the ACC Tournament, how
Jan 25, 2023, 10:48 AM

…how important is it to the future of Clemson hoops that this heretofore “unattainable” goal finally be achieved by Clemson THIS season?
Can Clemson continue to be the ONLY charter member of the ACC without a tournament championship and EVER be taken seriously in hoops?
Isn’t this the season that it finally MUST happen?
It’s a daunting task for sure, but how can we watch The Hokies and Jackets make it happen and just accept that it’s not in the cards for Clemson?
Just as we simply had to break the “0-Fer” in Chapel Hill (thank you Brad) now we simply must finally get past this crazy ACC Tournament drought.
We just have to!
Am I wrong?

What will we do if we dont reach this stretch goal? Fire our coach and hire a young unknown coach and watch all our young talent hit the portal?

Of course we won’t fire him. That’s not the point.

He will not be fired. That’s pretty much a given. The making the necessary strides as a program.
But, to your statement … exactly WHY is winning the tournament this season a “stretch” goal?
It’s a very realistic goal actually. And it should be.
The fact that it’s still viewed as a STRETCH after seeing mediocre Va Tech and Ga Tech squads make it happen is sort of the entire history of Clemson basketball in a nutshell.

Maybe the fact that we have never won the tournament makes it a stretch goal. The fact that every year there are good teams who do not win makes it a stretch goal. To win we need a good team, peak at the right time and a few breaks go our way. All have to happen as we have a solid roster but not more so than several other teams.
The fact that you think something which has never happened in a hundred years and requires multiple unlikely things to all happen at the same time as realistic speaks volumes.

Which other charter members have failed to win one ACC title

If it doesn’t happen this year, then so be it, but that does not excuse in any way the fact that Clemson has tried since the inception of the league and failed.
I’m just saying that until it does happen, Clemson basketball need not worry about being taken seriously. It’s a goal that simply must be reached before anything else will really matter.
We can appreciate the good things that Clemson has done in basketball over the years while at the same time admitting that failing to ever win the tournament is pretty unacceptable as a charter member of the league.
I’m 73. I’ve followed Clemson basketball for a long, long time. I can most certainly live with not winning the ACC title. I’ve already lived with it my entire life after all.
But right now, when the opportunity is right there in front of us, to just accept that we cannot do it even though Va Tech and Ga Tech just did it is a real downer of a Position to take as a Clemson fan.

Us winning the ACCT is a pipe dream, this season or any other. Until we increase our program budget to #1 in the ACC to overcome our 100 years of poor history, we have no business expecting to perform at that level and delivering such an outcome. Considering we were picked 11th pre-season in the ACC, you should simply be thankful for each and every win we muster out from here as it is all gravy.
Go Tigers.

Va Tech and Ga Tech both did it. Why is it a pipe dream?

Va Tech and Ga Tech devote no more to basketball than Clemson does.
They both won the ACC tournament in the past two years.
If we’re saying it’s still a “pipe dream” for Clemson, then we may as well just give up on hoops.

I never thought I would live long enough to see us win in Chapel Hill so you never know. The road gets much tougher so don't be surprised if some losses come up. The fact we at least have a chance is what makes it fun.

I absolutely agree. We have a unique opportunity this year.

It’s time we take advantage of the opportunity and get past this hurdle.
If we don’t, then we don’t.
But, people saying it’s a “stretch” and a “pipe dream” for Clemson to do what mediocre programs like Va Tech and Ga Tech just accomplished is really a sad statement.

I don't see that dominant team in the ACC this year where you say, "Uh oh, not them!" I'd say the door is definitely open.
