Hypothetical

Nov 14, 2022, 4:33 PM

11-1 Clemson, vs 11-1 UNC

We beat UNC very very comfortably, they're likely in the top 10

Notre Dame takes down USC and wins out 9-3.

How are we not in the playoffs? Not saying we wouldn't get blown out as the fourth seed, but someone entertain the idea.

No way will it happen nor should it happen. Check all of the teams ahead of us. OSU and Michigan both in before us, even with 1 loss. The way we looked against ND was the nail in our coffin. Navy looked better against ND (for those that say Marshall and Stanford were early in the year and ND improved)

Who exactly has Michigan beaten?

Nov 14, 2022, 4:45 PM

Their non-conference schedule may have been the worst in the nation. The bucknuts likely drub them in Columbus

Must consider margin of victory as well. You can argue SOS, but margin of victory needs to be taken into account. We were beneficiaries of that in past years when people said we had a weak schedule, but if you can drop 40-50+ points majority of the weeks and blow people out, voters take notice. We really weren't able to do that this year.

Michigan won’t get in over a 1 loss Clemson or a 1 loss UnC if they don’t beat Ohio State

After watching OSU underachieve, and last year’s meeting, I’m not betting on the bucknuts.

Objectively, we beat NC state as a top 10 team before Leary got hurt, beat an undefeated Syracuse before Schaefer got hurt, can’t really say much about wake but they were a nice win for a while, and then another top 10 win in UNC?

Im not sure how a one loss big 10 division runner up tops that but I’m just talking out loud here. I don’t think we’re a playoff team but it’s hard to argue against SOR

That’s a huge problem. Beating ranked teams in the ACC helps send them out the door. SEC, not so much.

Let me steps back and say: If our offense can hit on all cylinders, and our defense plays up to potential. We beat the remaining teams on our schedule by 40+ points, then we could have a chance.

a 1-Loss Clemson Gets if both USC or TCU picks up a loss

and maybe if only 1 does.

No way a one loss Michigan without a conference championship

Nov 14, 2022, 9:26 PM [ in reply to Re: Hypothetical ]

gets in over a one loss Clemson with a conference championship.

To date, Georgia, Ohio State, Michigan, and Tennessee have all looked better. Another way to consider it it, SEC #3 and #4 (Alabama and LSU) are probably better than ACC #1 to be honest whether it ends up being Clemson or UNC.

However, if fate finds a way to let Clemson in, by all means let it happen.

There’s a chance…but…

Nov 14, 2022, 4:54 PM

It really hinges on TCU.
If they win out, they are in.
Even with 1 loss (provided it was not in conference championship)…they’ll be considered.
Not sure what USC will do..they have 3 pretty tough games left.
Assuming UGA and Ohio St win out…
That would leave it between us and Tennessee, most likely. Michigan probably falls behind.
While the conference championship might put us over…Tennessee will have a pretty strong case.
Still too many variables at this point.
I do think our demise has been exaggerated a bit and there’s a path there…it’s not all that chaotic….basically USC and TCU each losing a game opens the door pretty wide.
But if/when it does happen, it will be dramatic…I think LSU and Bama are going to stay in front of us until conference championship weekend…but Bama will be stuck then. In theory, they should be dropped a spot after playing Austin Peay this coming Saturday…but it won’t happen.

The comparison of how we play against SC and how TN plays against SC could be critical because comparison of like opponents is something the committee will look at and those games coming back to back as the last regular season games will get a strong look.

Clemson's CFP playoff was 2 weeks ago in South Bend...

We all know the result of that...

...essentially ALL credibility with the CFP committee is LOST.

Any "benefit of the doubt" that the CFP gave to Clemson on the initial standings at #4, which EVERYONE criticized and ridiculed, has been lost.

It is a "Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me." syndrome. The CFP won't be caught overestimating Clemson again this year.

That game was Clemson's "play-in" game.

Nov 14, 2022, 4:59 PM

The record we have and the record Notre Dame has little to do with the Playoffs. The records that Georgia, Ohio State and TCU matter if they are undefeated. After the 3 potential undefeated teams, we will not get the spot over Tennessee because they only lost to Georgia and beat Alabama and LSU and our schedule will not hold up to that.

The loss to ND pretty much knocked us from the CFP. Best we can do is Orange Bowl after winning the ACCC

It’s a ridiculous take, we haven’t ever been left out with one loss, if we win our remaining games we will be a playoff team but we have business to do and winning isn’t easy.

Going from #10 in the rankings to #4 is going to take more than an ACC Championship. We need some help from teams currently ahead of us to pull it off. Slim hope but not impossible...

Nov 14, 2022, 9:50 PM

If you really believe that then you kind of have to ask the question if the committee thinks so highly of an ACC Champion why do they currently have (2) SEC teams with 2 losses ranked ahead of us. The way they are voting is not lining up with the ACC Champion being a lock for the playoffs. Not even close...
