there was a place across the highway from the HS that kids would sneak out to go eat called Burgers and Cream, they had 3 different size burgers, Pappa, Momma and Baby (what we now call a slider), sadly it has gone away and is now a Chinese restaurant, and the HS moved and is now a middle school, funny part is you would run into the teachers while getting your food, and nothing was said as long as you made it back in time for class, sigh I miss the 80's.

Spud, are you flaunting your youth? I remember driving to the Anderson McD and getting 2 burgers at.15 each, fries made with real fresh peeled and cut potatoes at .15 and coke for .10. I think at that time they only had one size burger, or that was the only size I could afford.

When I was in school there were no Hardees, McDonalds or even a school cafeteria. If we wanted a sausage biscuit, we brought it from home. We could also have a choice of country cured ham on that biscuit or even a steak. WOW !!!! How we did suffer !!!! If we had "store bought" bread, it was referred to as "light bread". The loaves were smaller but we could buy three for twenty five cents. Even back then, we had highway robbery in a grocery store.

At the start, McDonald's fries were 10 cents. Thirty-five cents would get you a hamburger, French fries and a Coke. And no sales tax. Of course, there was no place to sit except your car...or on the hood thereof.

A bunch of us would pile into Rob's car and drive across town to the only McD in town. We made it during our lunch time, of course he had to floor it most of the way. No worries, it was a VW bus, so we never topped 25 mph.
I also remember buying gas with a handful of change, they pumped it for you and handed you a candy bar, a glass, ...
Then agin I was earning the state min-wage of $1.15/hr.

I would get a 1/4 Pounder w/ cheese, a large fry, and an apple turnover for $1.03 including tax. I remember the day it went up to $1.10. All I had was $1.03 and the cashier let it slide.

I love that small menu. Way before the invasion of everything chicken and all day breakfast. Life was so much simpler. Oh and the McD fries were so much better than the “healthier” recipe they use now days.

Mr. Spud I recently saw the ring you gave Mrs. Spud a very beautiful lady. Was she 12 or 13 when you married her! lol She is an attractive lady how did you work that out?
Best to both of you. Spud thank you for the ticket to the Virginia game that changed my daughters life in a big way. She is now a 2015 Clemson Graduate.
PS: McDonald’s could still sale you that $1 meal if the bun and what they call hamburger were about the size of a quarter, they gave 2 or 3 fries and a Coke in a cup about the size of the cup they use to give you Your meds in at the hospital. Remember Hardee’s Gilbert Giddy Up and the Hamburgerler. Wow how time flies.

minutes at church...When we were first married, an older couple at the church thought that I had been forced to get permission from Mrs. Spud's parents to marry her UNDER AGE....I was 25 at the time and while they admitted they thought I looked my age, they were absolutely certain Mrs. Spud was no more than 16....

Crown gas station on 291 for a few months when I was SEVENTEEN. I would fill up the tanks for some customers and take their credit card, place it in machine where you manually slid a press over it to obtain a carbon copy for them, walk it out to them and let them sign it. CAN ANY OF YOU YOUNGSTERS IMAGINE GOING TO THE GAS STATION, FILLING UP, AND NEVER EVEN GETTING OUT OF THE CAR?

Better yet I remember when you could run out and over to Dan's and get a full entree meal for $1.25 or grab a lunch or dinner at Mrs. Neuman's for $3 and $5 - even sometimes a steak dinner for that price - TOP THAT!!!!
