How many duffeurs on here have ever played Musgrove Mill

Golf Club in Clinton, SC? It is a private club, but I played it once many years ago in a four man group in a SCANA One Day Tournament. It has the distinction of being, for me at least, the course with the fastest greens I ever putted on. Now, it may not be as fast as The Augusta National, (which I have NOT been lucky enough to ever play) but it was plenty fast. If you hit is above the hole on several holes, you were doomed. It didn't matter how softly you hit the putt, it was going into the fringe, or all the way back down into the fairway. Just like a lot of courses the Big Boys play on, it SEVERELY penalized you for getting "out of position".

I don't remember the exact hole number, but it was a Par 5, and our group had gotten on it in two, (Captain's Choice Format). We were above the hole, but only about 15 feet away, and were salivating about the possibility of making Eagle. As I was a pretty good putter back then, I was putting anchor. The first three guys putted it off the green. I applied my best defensive putt, and kept it on the green, about 18 feet below the hole. We did somehow manage to can that one for Birdie, and walked off the green humbled and grateful.

I have not, as some on here have done, played many truly great courses all around. I only remember a couple that even approached the same neighborhood of speed as the greens at Musgrove Mill. One was Timberlake Golf Club, shortly after they opened. Another was a typical tourist trap course in Dirty Mrytle, named Deer Track (Deerfield Plantation). They had bentgrass greens, and it was so hot, they had greens crews coming out with fire hoses and "syringing" the greens after every couple of groups to keep them from burning up. They were so fast, the ball would actually skid off your putter if you overcooked it at all.

What courses do some of you golf affictionnaters got?

:)

Yep, that's a good one.

Chanticleer at Greenville CC would be similar green speed and they can make them as fast as they want when a tournament rolls around.

One of the hardest courses around. It will humble you quickly and often.

MM is the hardest course I have ever played with Tidewater maybe being the 2nd hardest. The only par 5 at MM that fits your description is #9 and it is a beast so you must have played a really up tee.

Tidewater can play really tough. Also playing on the coast I’m always have to club up one. A couple of really tough courses I have played in the past that come to mind is Glen Dornach and Kings North. Kings North has tee shots that all you can see is bunkers. Looking back I definitely played from the wrong set of tees. Normally I will gauge it one set up from the tips but think I needed 2 up. Seemed to have a lot of 4 irons into par 4’s.

said that was his favorite course around here, and in his opinion, the best. I never played it, but always wanted to give it a shot.

I was once a member at Musgrove and it did indeed have fast greens. I have been fortunate in that I have played Augusta several times, Pine Valley and Merion several times, but the fastest greens may be at Seminole.

I’ve been fortunate enough to play some really great courses mostly work related and because we have lived in so many different places. The hardest greens to keep the ball on were at the Great White Course at Doral. All of the greens sloped in every direction, and many times towards the water. The fairways even sloped to the water on most holes and it was hard to keep the ball in play. Athens (GA) Country Club might have been the hardest greens to putt overall. The easiest elite level course I ever played was Firestone in Akron. Probably the most snooty course I ever played was in Fort Lauderdale and I don’t remember the name but it might have been Echo. The course I lost the most balls playing was definitely Charleston National. Very small landing areas and all surrounded by marsh.

I have heard my uncle talk about this course, and if I remember he spoke highly of it.

Played in league last night at Tega Cay and those greens were shaved with a brown tint to them. You could hit a putt and it look like it’s never going to reach the hole and end up with a 4-5 footer coming back. Had to pay attention on every putt.
