I can't remember any program with aspirations of improving would put up with these mediocre results (whatever the reasons are) for this long.
This is 7 years of this crap.

Honestly, when even your best players cannot

make a clutch shot, free throw, layup during close games with really good teams, you cannot lay losses on the coach. Recruiting top level basketball talent at Clemson is not a walk in the park. Coach K would spend a lot more time fixing his back coaching our talent. Roy would pass out on the sideline. We were so close. I think dropping Brownell would set us back.

Not a Brownell guy, but why spend the money on his buyout

and then a bunch more on another coach when we can spend the money on successful CU sports like football, soccer, baseball, etc.

except in spurts or from the success of the blue-bloods. What we made this year will probably be the same with Brownell next year. Any new fans that show up for a new face won't make up for the buyout cost and higher salary.

very few sports make $$ off of tix sales. but if you don't think basketball brings in major $$$ with media contracts, you are sadly mistaken.

So your solution is to simply let his contract expire

leaving nothing for a new coach, not even the shine of new facilities? His buyout only drops 500K the next three years. So three things can happen: 1) A miraculous turnaround. 2) Fire him at some point and eat the buyout. 3) Contract expire leaving a lame duck coach to try to recruit, which he won't be able to do
Basically you are saying just give up

Follower of Clemson Basketball since 1960...graduate of Clemson...first game I attended was Wake Forest vs Clemson and tickets were given to me by my next door neighbor Bones McKinney (the WFU head coach)...the tickets were behind Clemson's bench and I was told by Coach McKinney that if he looked over behind the Clemson bench and I was not standing and yelling for Clemson, he would personally come take the tickets back...so I stood and yelled the whole game....I think we lost 81 - 50 something. Here are my reasons: 1. I like his philosophy of upgrading our out of conference schedule. 2. I like the way he is not afraid to delegate coaching responsibilities to assistant coaches (scouting, game plans, etc) allowing his assistants to grow in their profession...I think 3 have left in the past 4 years for head coaching positions. 3. I can't count last year's 25+ game travel schedule with no home games...I don't know how the coaches or the players were able to do that. 4. I have been able to sit in on 3 "scouting reports" prior to 3 games...hear the basic ideas of what to expect from the opponent and what Clemson will be doing throughout the game. Then to be able to actually see the plan come together...The home game against FSU the other week was one of those games and there were very few miscues during that game. 5. As a head coach he has been a huge part of developing a plan of making our facilities one of the finest in the conference and nation. 6. Clemson is a tough place to recruit for basketball...history is not with us...the level of play in SC high schools is not that great...but we are at a point now because of facilities, grad rates, etc. to attract top players. We have some really talented players right now...DeVoe was a steal out of Shelby...Reed, Mitchell, Blossinggame, etc.
I can go on, but I have already written more than even I would take the time to read. I love the game, I love Clemson, and I want at least 2 more years out of Coach Brownell. And I want the 4 old men who sat behind me at the unc game telling me to sit down, to stay home or go to a movie.

I'm against any extension but two more years would come with a buyout of 1 million and a requirement to be in the NCAA tournament in two years. Any problem with that?

No problem...I probably just threw that "2 years" out there. I just need more time to see what he can do...obviously I am very patient because NCAA Tournaments for my past 57 years have been few...I just think he can get us there.

You give him two more years and you have to

extend his contract. He can't recruit with less than four years out on one. And that brings up the million dollar question? Has his performance warranted a two year extension? To not extend him is to make him a lame duck and that's not fair to him, the program, or the possible next coach who will inherit nothing, making the job even less attractive

You are right. I just can't see giving him an extension based on his record. We need to see an NCAA tournament berth before that happens. Otherwise start the coaching search.

Don't think so...he has not earned our confidence. Not much fire, zero vision to energize our fan base. New coach time...can't get any worse than status quo. We're so numb and beaten down through years of mediocrity...hate that we have no passion, nor dog in the hunt at this time of the year...it is so much fun those few times when we've been in. BB fired for cause...do it now!
