and I believe the QB situation has been handled perfectly so far. I’m really proud of Davis. That kid has more than earned his scholarship.

Honestly I don't like the sound of some of the things in

this piece.
If players really believe that the staff is favoring one QB but they haven't bought in and they prefer the other one than that is a huge problem. So I don't see how we can say this has been handled well IF IT IS TRUE that this is where we are.
I'm hoping that it was only a few players and that there sentiments weren't as strong as I'm reading.

If that was true, why would we of scored at all with TL. I don't think any of the seniors came back to lose a game and not win a national championship. The fun is in the winning and we won big at GT. Hats off to all the players.

Correct. The players on the field seem to respond to TL pretty well. The offense moved with him in the game.

I had the same reaction. “He still deserves to start, coaches call better plays for TL, he didn’t do well against A&M and GT isn’t a good measuring stick.” I would be curious to know how “former” these players are. If it’s 5-10+ years ago, I’m less concerned. Those kind of sentiments seem petty and jealous to me. Hopefully that isn’t an issue with the current group.

I certainly don't know which former players said what, but I do know that Tajh Boyd has been vocal on social media bout the coaches calling better plays for Lawrence.

Yes, the plays are different for KB vs. TL, but...
Sep 24, 2018, 11:30 AM
|
|
...it is because they have two totally different skill sets. KB is a runner, always has been, always will be. He also has challenges in the passing game. Mainly his mechanics and his decision making. Not saying KB hasn't improved, because Freshman KB vs. Now KB is a world of difference. But he has always been trying to fit in a square hole. And while he has worked hard to shave off his edges, and the coaches have developed game plans to showcase his talen (Miami ACCCG 2017), he will always be the round peg trying to go into a square hole. He is what he is, a good mobile QB with challenges when it comes to throwing the football. The thing about TL is he is the square peg. He needs no modifications to fit the square hole, just fine tuning and deeper understanding of the offense. Both of which will come with practice and game experience. Right now you do not have to force TL to become something he is not, he just is. But with KB (God Bless him) it will always be a struggle to get production out of our passing game. So yeah, the plays are different. Because a round peg can't do some things a square peg can, and vice-versa, but right now we need a square peg for that square hole at QB.

And it looks like the plays are better because Lawrence will actually utilized the middle 2/3 of the field. Bryant's passes are either sideline go routes or bubble/jet screens. Nothing down the seam

It’s very true the coaches call different plays for KB than they do TL.

Honestly, it’s not even a fair competition in that regard. With KB, everything is a curl or a screen. I don’t think the coaches have confidence in him throwing across the middle of the field or deep, even though we’ve seen him make those throws before. The playbook opens up when TL is in the game, part of which is because of his talent but still.
I still think the coaches will continue to start KB or at the minimum, play him a few drives to keep him/TL honest. But it’s at the point where it’s painfully obvious who deserves to start based on production on the field.

I still don't understand the whole KB led us to victory over A&M, we had several chances to put the game away and didn't. It was a punt fest in the 4th qtr by the offense. We just did enough to win, but left more than enough points on the table.
As far as the players thinking better plays are called for TL, well....that's because you can open up the playbook with a QB like him. If you want to run 100% of the playbook at any point in the game, play TL. If you want the offense to be limited with the play calling, then play KB. I think anyone that watches the game regardless of who you favor can see the difference. KB is good enough to win a lot of games, but the running game and defense usually does the majority of the work. To me he's just topped out at what he is and is still inconsistent and to indecisive at times. Like Herbie said earlier in the year, when playoff time rolls around and we play a Bama or UGA, TL will be the guy we need behind center.

Same here. If anything, Trevor is the one who had bad plays called for him against A&M.
Sep 24, 2018, 10:05 AM
|

His two series in the third quarter were mostly bad plays for his skill set. Then Bryant came in and led a couple of good drives for TDs, but he didn’t lead us to any points in the fourth quarter. The notion that we needed him to win the game, and that TL wasn’t ready for the big stage/rod atmosphere, is ridiculous.
I also agree that KB doesn’t get as many different plays called for him because he hasn’t shown an ability to successfully execute them.

When KB is the QB, the box is stacked. Why? Because other teams don't respect his arm. The Result? Our RBs get less carries and KB's rushing stats generally outweigh them or are fairly close - without checking stats - it certainly feels that way. When TL is the QB, the box isn't stacked. We can run the ball at will. And when the opposing team's D focuses on stopping the run, TL burns them with a pass. Sorry, but our offense is better when TL is playing if for no other reason than it requires opposing defenses to play us differently than if KB is in there. There's no question that TL is the better passer of the ball. There's no question that KB is the better runner of the ball. Call them even if you just looked at passing and running and traded one for the other. When we begin to face better defenses and lord willing, we see Bama again - that game will not go any better this time than it did the last if KB is the QB. The team that beats a team like Bama this year will have a QB that is effective at passing the ball. Ideally, that same QB is effective at also running the ball which I understand that TL can also do when needed. I don't think any team will have success against a team like Bama if they try to run the ball with RBs. What concerns me on our offense is the lack of getting the tight ends involved whether it's TL or KB. If you had to rely 100% on passing the ball, I think we have to continue to improve passing the ball to RB's and getting the TE's involved. As for ETN and running the ball - fantastic effort and improvement by him. However, I don't think his stats or any of the other RB's stats are great when KB is the QB. Show me Lynn J Dixon running the ball when TL is in there - just once.

Even with KB being the better runner...

We are still better at running the football AS A TEAM when TL is in at QB because the defenses can't stack the box and we utilize the RB's. It doesn't matter how good KB is at running with the ball if he's facing eight in the box every play. The GT game looked to be the first time we had Lawrence and ETN in the game together, oh boy.
With Kelly in at QB, we are incredibly similar to the Ohio State team led by JT Barrett that we beat 31-0 in Arizona.

Maybe there are better plays called for the freshman, because he can make them! (I haven’t noticed...either QB can check into or out of a play, usually).

Ok. Let's get something straight. This nonsense about
Sep 24, 2018, 12:43 PM
|
|
Trevor getting better play calls than Kelly...hogwash. The play calls are reflective of each guy's ability to produce with said play. If it looks like Kelly's plays are limited in potential it's because Kelly has limitations in his game, ie: throwing the football. Trevor Lawrence has no such limitations. And I'll trade designed QB runs all day every day for needle-threading laser pointer throws, circus catches for TDs, and morale crushing offense.
Get out of here with that nonsense. It has nothing to do with anything except one guy being more talented and productive than the other. I love Kelly in a lot of ways, but he got beat out. It happens.
