I'll take a shot at the student ticket theme

Apr 13, 2016, 9:06 AM

The law of demand is inversely related.

so when price goes up demand goes down.

Apply it to this scenario: The demand for student tickets are more than what they can fit in the student section. Therefore increase price (from nothing to something) and demand will drop to what is allowable in the stadium.

Let's say the student section holds 800 students. 2000 are wanting tickets to each game. Do you allow them to spill over into the "pay" seats that non students are sitting in and therefore have less revenue or do you increase the price of student tickets and increase that revenue stream while keeping the pay seat revenue the same?

Econ 101.

Hold your horses...

There are only 18,000 students and 83,000 seats. I learned that yesterday.

Yeah. I don't see 18000 students at each game. Ever. And rarely the whole game. Maybe they'll stay if they have to pay, ie enjoy football.

Think you're overlooking the 'other' demand...

Apr 13, 2016, 9:37 AM

... iptay reps had told us previously that we could get more than our 'allowed number of season tix' (based upon our donation level) if we so desired.

This year, when I asked about getting more, I was informed that iptay membership (and demand for tix) had increased so much that we would be limited to our allowed no of tix.

Methinks that iptay may have something to do with the intent to eliminate students from 'competing' with us fat cat, er, THOSE fat cat iptay donors who may be coveting those lower deck seats - especially when/if said seats may be way less than full after halftime (of most games).

Whatever choice(s) you make makes you. Choose wisely.

There are some courses beyond Econ 101.

Supply and demand principles in an "all else equal" vacuum don't apply fully to market realities.

You are correct with the Ceterus Paribus assumption

Apr 13, 2016, 9:42 AM

however, the premise is still the same especially talking generally about tickets. There are a varying amount of other factors what would skew the data, but the premise is still true.

Charging students more to attend a game just seems wrong. Besides, IPTAY/general public ticket prices will probably go up anyway, so the Law of Double-Dipping at the Revenue Well is in full swing. College ticket pricing is out of control.

What's next--charging fees for having a picnic before the game from the trunk of your car? Maybe we should put coin slots on the trash cans so you can pay to throw away your trash. Hey--Tiger Band occupies seats--let's charge them to sit in the stadium during games. If they won't pay, forget the band and just play a recording of Tiger Rag on the PA system.
