I have of late been watching a serious documentary on WWII and the German ineptitude and gullibleness is palpable. How in the world did it take 5years to win. How did that guy Colonel Klink make field grade officer?

Germany messed up by leaving England till later and invading Russia.
Colonel Klink may have been in on that decision.

If Hitler would have been as smart as he thought he was, he would have known that Japan was planning an attack against America, and through talking, or threatening them into delaying their grievances toward America bc it was the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor that brought the USA into a war against Japan and Germany with it all happening simultaneously, and that caused Germany's forces to be stretched to the point more than they could bare. Before Japan's attack against America, America wasn't using every means that we had to create weapons of war in masses, and that was Japan's and Germany's biggest down fall by bringing America into that war. They gravely misunderstood the American might, and the ability to create weapons of war at an alarming rate when America feels threatened or attacked by any country.
It's been said that right now Russia has more nuclear weapons than any country in the world, but what they don't have is the technology that America has to deliver a more devastating nuclear weapons with pinpoint accuracy, and regardless of the devastation that a nuclear war would do to the world, the Americans would have the last man standing even though after a global nuclear war, why would it matter who has the last man standing!!!

He was not treaty-bound to become involved. Besides, Hitler didn't follow treaties anyway. He had signed a non-aggression pact with Stalin and we know how that turned out

You are correct MFO!
One of the greatest political blunders in history! It's likely Roosevelt would have found a way to enter the war in Europe, Hitler made it easy for him.

Well the final outcome was that we made the world safe for communism...before WW2 commies could not even get Spain...with us supporting Russia by the end almost a billion people were under communism! FDR and the dems screwed the whole world!

Ignorant response colored by modern politics.

The two parties were much different than they are now. Both had conservative and liberal elements, along with isolationist and interventionist wings. FDR's war and navy secretaries after 1940 were both Republicans. Do you honestly believe the US and free world would have been safer with the Nazis dominating Europe and Japan in East Asia? Even an arch conservative like Churchill was willi g to shake hands with the devil to defeat Hitler. Yes the USSR came out of the war a world power, but so did the USA. At the time, we were wise enough to stay involved in the world, not retreat behind two oceans.

They tried to fight a 2 front war and didn't have the resources to do it.

After invading Poland, they had to wait months to attack the West because the army was too small. Then they made the mistake of invading the USSR with Britain still standing. Hitler then stupidly declared war on us because he thought we'd be too busy in the Pacific to send large forces to Europe. They also had possibly the worst ally in Italy and had keep bailing out Mussolini when he did stupid things. Ironically, Germany never converted her economy to focus on war. The Nazis wanted to keep the home folks happy. See Why the Allies Won by Richard Overy.

Thee is an exhibit we saw on our inflatable planes and tanks which made Hitler think we would invade at Calais. Also used these tricks to divert some fire away from actual units once we did land in Europe. Amazing stuff that only became known in recent years

The 12th Army Group, first commanded by Gen Patton, was the Ghost Army and when he was moved to the 3rd Army to prepare for DDay my great uncle Gen William H Simpson was assigned to the 12th and then after DDay the 9th Army that supplied reinforcements in France and Belgium including the Battle of the Bulge.

I don't know how you can say that they won. I think the war is still going on. I saw that Colonel Klink guy on TV just the other night...there was a bombing raid near the camp.

Chamberlain and FDR, and even Stalin, let Hitler kinda do his thing and actually trusted him. Nobody wanted war so relatively soon after The Great War (as it was known then). So he walked right into several countries, without even firing a shot, and then conquered some with an overpowering and mostly unopposed military. By the time everyone recognized Hitler's true colors, it was too late - he had established firm footholds throughout Europe and had energized the German population. The people and the military were confident and strong. The navy was dominating the Atlantic with the U-Boats and Hitler's air force was reigning terror down on the UK and the rest of Europe, while his military rewrote many of the rules for modern warfare.
The ineptitude you reference came later and was borne largely of overconfidence and not taking seriously the capabilities and resolve of the allied nations.
Many lessons to be learned by us today. But we won't.
