South Carolina Highway 93 is a 19.8 mile state highway that runs from the west end at US 123/US 76/SC 28 in Clemson to the east end at US 123 in Easley passing through Central, Norris, and Liberty. Medal of Honor recipient Furman L. Smith was from Central as is BigAl31.

Having written some about Clemson and Central, I'll discuss Liberty, a town of 3,300 in Pickens County chartered in 1876. It is another town unsure of the origin of its name. One story is that Annie Craig wrote in 1936 that a church next to a spring near the present town was holding a service at the close of the Revolutionary War when word came of the surrender of Cornwalis, so the church and eventually the town were named Liberty. It is also another town on former Cherokee land. Early traders did business with the Cherokees, but when they supported the Loyalists in the Revolution, they were forced to cede land under the Treaty of DeWitt's Corner in 1777. The railroad and textiles shaped the town in the 1800s and 1900s. Parts of The Midnight Man and most of The Chill Factor were filmed in Liberty.

It seems fair to say that Dwayne Allen (2009-2011) is one of Clemson’s best tight ends in history. The national acclaim he won speaks for itself!

According to Sports-Reference.com, Dwayne Allen registered the following statistics at Clemson:

Of note:
In 2011, Dwayne Allen was a consensus All-American. According to ClemsonTigers.com:

In 2011, Dwayne Allen also won the John Mackey Award for college football’s top tight end. According to GoUpstate.com:

“Clemson junior tight end Dwayne Allen won the John Mackey Award, given to the nation's top college tight end, on Thursday evening at the Home Depot College Football Awards show in Orlando, Fla.

Allen, who won the award over finalists Tyler Eifert of Notre Dame and Orson Charles of Georgia, is the first Clemson offensive player to win a national position award.

The Clemson tight end had 48 receptions for 577 yards and eight touchdowns this year to help the Tigers to their first ACC Championship in 20 years. His reception total, reception yards and touchdowns are Clemson single-season records for a tight end. He had two touchdown receptions in the ACC Championship game against Virginia Tech, helping the Tigers to a 38-10 victory.

The Indianapolis Colts selected Dwayn Allen with the 64th pick (3rd Round) of the 2012 NFL Draft. He played 5 seasons for the Colts (2012-2016) and 2 seasons for the New England Patriots (207-2018). Pro-Football-Reference.com presents the following NFL statistics for Allen:

He immediately sought to be involved with the NFL Players Association and became the player representative for the Colts in his first year. He continued to be active with the organization, serving as the representative for the Colts and Patriots over seven years.

“I was passionate about it. I had had the experience with the Colts when I went to the Patriots and was able to transition younger players into representatives. I wanted to empower the next generation.”
