On Tigernet, David Hood described the 2016 South Carolina at Clemson game as follows:

“Clemson racked up an astounding 40 first downs and had 622 total yards of offense to the Gamecocks’ 218. South Carolina had just 107 passing yards and freshman quarterback Jake Bentely – who took a beating in the first half – didn’t return for the second half.

It was, in a word, embarrassing.”

You can learn a lot about someone when they get knocked down – particularly when that knockdown involves being thoroughly outclassed.

- How a Normal Person Responds:
A beating like that would provide a dose of reality for a normal person. A normal person would recognize such a one-sided beatdown as demonstrating a clear need for improvement – and would then use this beating as added motivation to improve.

- How a Delusion Person Responds:
A delusion person, however, might offer the following assessment:

“We just didn’t play well that week,” Bentley told FOX Carolina in an interview last Wednesday. “That’s our big quote going into this year. We felt we got outworked, so never again. So our big thing is never again we will be outworked. Never again will be outcompeted in a game like that. It all stems from that game, because at the end of the game everyone knew that they were not that much better than us or better than us at all.”
- USC starting quarterback Jake Bentley as quoted in the Greenville Journal

https://greenvillejournal.com/community/gamecocks-qb-confident-team-clemsons-level/

“Not that much better!”
If looking at the statistics, one might - might - draw a slightly different conclusion. According to Saturday Down South the stats were as follows:

“Final score 56 to 7, first downs 41 to 14, total yards 622 to 218, passing yards 372 to 107, rushing yards 250 to 111, yards per pass attempt 10.3 to 3.7, Deshaun Watson vs. Jake Bentley touchdown passes 6 to 0.”

https://www.saturdaydownsouth.com/south-carolina-football/jake-bentley-clemson-everyone-knew-werent-much-better-us-better-us/

Sometimes, you just might be better off recognizing your situation than denying it.

The game was also the final home game for several Clemson star players. ESPN added the following information regarding QB Deshaun Watson’s final game in Death Valley:

“Watson, playing his final home game, threw his third TD pass of the opening quarter for a 21-0 lead Saturday night, then placed his hands together and leaned his head against them as if to say, "Nighty night."

The Gamecocks never woke up after that in Clemson's 56-7 domination, the team's largest margin of victory in the rivalry since a 51-0 win in 1900.

Watson tied his career high with six touchdown passes, three to Mike Williams in Clemson's latest step toward the College Football Playoff.

https://www.espn.com/college-football/recap/_/gameId/400869074

ESPN also made the following point:

“Watson pledged before he came he'd never lose to the Gamecocks (6-6) and leaves 3-0, the junior heading to the NFL after this season.”

https://www.espn.com/college-football/recap/_/gameId/400869074

Clemson WR Mike Williams was also playing his final Clemson home game. To celebrate he offered South Carolina DBs free piggyback rides.

Always good to provide for the less fortunate!

Chicken players missed the point, however. Not only did Gamechicken players claim “Never Again!” but they also complained that Clemson disrespected them at the end of this 56-7 dismantling. They claimed Clemson should have given them more respect in their impressive 7-56 performance than to call a late timeout in order to allow fans to recognize these departing key players. As reported by WLTX:

“A 56-7 loss to the arch-rivals triggered a "Never Again" battle cry from Carolina.

The Gamecocks were thoroughly humiliated in last year's meeting in Death Valley but throwing some salt in the wounds was, in the opinion of at least two Gamecocks, the way Clemson called some late timeouts so their seniors and high-profile juniors could take one last curtain call.

USC center Alan Knott saw it as a sign of disrespect.

"The way they finished the game out last year, it wasn't very good sportsmanship, in my opinion,” Knott said.

“But that’s fine. We’re going to get our revenge against them this year.”
USC safety D.J. Smith echoed those sentiments.

"We see that score, 56-7. and we're thinking 'Man, we can't have that again," Smith said.

"It was disrespect they called the two time outs to gloat on us last year and we remember all of that. So, it's in the back of our heads and we're ready to play."

https://www.wltx.com/article/news/usc-players-feel-tigers-showed-disrespect-in-56-7-win/101-493845633

No doubt that extreme motivation played a big role in South Carolina’s performance against Clemson the next season (2017). The Chickens only lost that one 34-10.

That was a beat down. Had to go and watch that again. It's funny. I realized, watching that game, that there were several things I couldn't explain.

DW, coming out of h.s., was a stick thin kid. I remember thinking, during his recruitment, that kids going to have to put on some weight and muscle, which he did. Something else I saw. During that championship run, he had 29 TDS and 13 int to that point of the season. DW wasn't afraid. Some of the throws he made, just wow. Presnap decisions, determination and execution. The first 3rd down throw to Renfrow, that's what we're missing today. DW knew what he was going to do and made it happen. No hesitation, no fear, just execution.

South Carolina Highway 56 is a 63.7-mile state highway that runs from the south end at SC 39 near Chappells to the north end at US 176 between Southern Shops and Valley Falls, going through Clinton and Spartanburg. Steve Fuller, Charone Peake, and Adam Humphries are from Spartanburg.

Nine miles north of Clinton, South Carolina, just off SC 56 is the Battle of Musgrove Mill State Historic Site. It is a 397-acre park on the Enoree River and the edge of the Sumter National Forest between Spartanburg, Laurens, and Union counties. It is the site of the Battle of Musgrove Mill on August 19 of 1780 during the Revolutionary War where a group of 200 Patriot militia struck a group of Loyalists camped on the Enoree River, unaware that the Loyalist group had more than doubled with transfer portal additions from Ninety-Six. However, the Patriots had a good gameplan with good player development and a good name, the Overmountain Men, and won in a rout. After the battle, the Overmountain Men returned to the Appalachian Mountains in east Tennessee in advance of the early October Battle of Kings Mountain.
