32 - Dwight Clark had 32 Receptions for Clemson

In March 1979 San Francisco 49er reps traveled to Clemson to scout a QB of interest to them. They likely had no idea their visit would lead them to sign one of the most prolific WRS in 49er history.

While at Clemson:

ClemsonTigers.com provided the following information about Clemson WR Dwight Edward Clark (1975-1978):

“Clark caught just 30 passes for 571 yards in his Clemson career, but he averaged 17.3 yards per catch, still the seventh highest yards per catch rate in Clemson history. He had just three touchdown receptions in his career, but few longtime Clemson fans will forget his 62-yard touchdown catch at Maryland in 1978 in a 28-24 victory that clinched Clemson’s first ACC title in 11 years.

Clemson concluded the 1978 season with an 11-1 record and finished tied for sixth in the final UPI Coaches poll. Ironically for Clark, the Tigers were tied for sixth with Notre Dame, Joe Montana’s college team.”

While at Clemson he also dated Miss Universe, Shawn Weatherly.

Clark was a talented WR at Clemson even if he was not highly targeted. But, the bigger story happened after Clemson.

After Clemson:

As ClemsonTigers.com wrote in 2018:

“San Francisco head coach Bill Walsh was considering drafting Fuller in the first round.

So he made a call to Fuller’s room to schedule a visit and work out, and Clark answered the phone. Fuller was not in the room at the time.

“Dwight had the whole thing (workout) set up before I even knew about it,” said Fuller. “That was typical Dwight. He never met a stranger. He and coach Walsh hit it off from the start.”
Clark caught everything during that workout with Fuller and impressed Walsh to the extent that he drafted him in the 10th round with the 249th pick. Fuller was taken in the first round by the Chiefs and Walsh took Montana in the third round with the 82nd pick.

That one-day workout led to a sterling NFL career that included two Super Bowl titles as a player and three as an administrator. Clark totaled 508 receptions for 6,750 yards and 48 touchdowns in nine seasons with the 49ers. Even with the passing era we are in now, he is still third in franchise history in receptions.”

Clark’s enjoyed an amazing 9 year career with the 49ers – including 2 Super Bowl Titles. He is best known for making “The Catch” against the Dallas Cowboys that sent the 49ers into the 1982 (1981 season) Super Bowl. Of note: The 49ers credit Clark’s play as continuing to benefit the 49ers well beyond the 1981 season. for future seasons:

“His story of recording one of the most famous plays in NFL history, "The Catch," has stood the test of time and inspired future generations, including current 49ers players, in their football careers.”

- 506 Receptions for 6,750 Yards (13.3 Average)
- 48 Receiving Touchdowns
- 6 Carries for 50 Yards (8.3 Average)

Personally, I think those receiving statistics are NFL Hall of Fame worthy. That has not been the case for Clark, however.

“Clark tallied 506 catches for 6,750 yards and 48 touchdowns, along with 50 rushing yards in his nine NFL seasons with the 49ers. He led the NFL in receptions (60) during the strike-shortened 1982 season and made the Pro Bowl twice, in 1981 and 1982. Sports Illustrated writer Paul Zimmerman named Clark his Player of the Year for 1982.”

Sadly, Dwight Clark announced that he was dealing with ALS in 2017. After he passed away in 2018, the Greenville News printed the following quote from an NFL colleague:

“Dwight Clark may have been the most humble star the NFL has ever produced. Yes, he was fun and funny, but Dwight had an innate goodness to him that will never be forgotten by those who had the good fortune to know him.”

The park was established in 1974 with help from the Nature Conservancy. After the North Carolina General Assembly declared it a state park in 2007, public access to the swamp area was allowed for the first time in 2008. The park offers a 2,000-foot boardwalk and 20 miles of hiking and biking trails as well as canoe, kayak, and boat access to the 22-mile-long Dismal Swamp Canal, a man-made canal that opened in 1805, the oldest operating canal in the United States.

A big swamp, bears, and the name Dismal makes you want to go bad.
