17 - Terry Kinard Holds the Clemson Record with 17 Interceptions

Clemson DB Alfred Terance (Terry) Kinard (1978-1982) was one of the most accomplished Clemson Tigers ever to play the game.

For example, consider this quick excerpt from ClemsonTigers.com on November 5, 2001:

“Terry Kinard is the most decorated football player in Clemson history. Those honors will grow today when he is honored by the College Football Hall of Fame and inducted into the Clemson Ring of Honor.”

https://clemsontigers.com/terry-kinard-2/

While at Clemson:

According to ClemsonTigers.com:

“Terry Kinard was the first Clemson player to be a unanimous All-America pick, and is now one of only three unanimous All-America selections in school history. He was the first two-time Clemson All-American defensive back and a first-team AP All-American two years in a row, the only Clemson player to do that. He was named the CBS National Defensive Player-of-the-Year for the 1982 season and was chosen to the USA Today All-College Football Team in the 1980’s.
Kinard was a two-year member of the All-ACC team. He was the all-time Clemson leader in interceptions with 17, a mark that tied the 20-year-old ACC record. He also holds Clemson record for tackles by a defensive back with 294 in his career.”

https://clemsontigers.com/terry-kinard-3/

The Hall of Fame Foundation adds the following:

“Terry Kinard had great statistics at free safety for Clemson. He had 17 interceptions, 30 pass deflections, and 292 tackles. In 1979, he made two interceptions in Clemson's 16-10 victory over Notre Dame. In 1981, he led the team in tackles and was consensus All-America as Clemson won the national championship. The Tigers went 12-0; the final game was a 22-15 victory over Nebraska in the Orange Bowl. In 1982, he was team captain, unanimous All-America, and was named Defensive Player of the Year by CBS and Chevrolet. He was Most Valuable Player in the Senior Bowl. More honors came his way. USA Today named him to its all-decade team of the 1980's. Sports Illustrated picked him on its all-century team.”

https://footballfoundation.org/hof_search.aspx?hof=2066

Wow!! What else can one say, but WOW!

ClemsonWiki lists Kinard’s honors in bullet form:

Honors
• 1981 - First-team Associated Press All-American
• 1982 - Only Tiger ever voted unanimous All-America and AP first-team All-America TWICE
• 1983 - NFL All-Rookie team
• 1988 - NFL Pro Bowler
• 1991 - College Football Hall of Fame
• 1991 - Clemson Ring of Honor
• 1996 - Named to Clemson's Centennial Team
• 2000 - Named Clemson's top player of the 20th Century by CNNsi.com
• Named to Sports Illustrated's All-Century team of college football
• Named part of the USA Today All-Decade team for the 1980's

https://clemsonwiki.com/wiki/Terry_Kinard

Absolutely amazing!

After Clemson:

The NY Giants selected Terry Kinard with the 10th Pick (1st Round) of the 1983 NFL Draft. He played 7 seasons with the Giants (1983-1989) before playing one season with the Houston Oilers (1990). According to Pro-Football-Reference.com, Kinard registered the following NFL statistics:

Terry Kinard (1983-1990: Giants, Oilers)
- 31 Interceptions Returned for 649 Yards
- 2 Interceptions Returned for Touchdowns
- 7 Fumble Recoveries Returned for 86 Yards
- 1 Fumble Recovery for Touchdown
- 2 Punt Returns for 8 Yards (4.0 Average)

https://www.pro-football-reference.com/players/K/KinaTe00.htm

As mentioned above, Kinard became the second Clemson football player inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1991. The first Clemson player to receive this honor was Banks McFadden.

He was also inducted into the Clemson Ring of Honor in 1981

17 - In 2009 Clemson Players Alternated Wearing 17 in Honor of Teammate

In 2008, LB Stanely Hunter played for Clemson. Before the 2009 season began, however, epilepsy forced him to stop playing the game he loved.

His Clemson teammates then showed why Clemson folks “Need No Introduction.”

In July 2009, GoUpstate reported:

“Stanley Hunter’s football career at Clemson has come to an abrupt end.

The former Byrnes standout will take a medical hardship this season due to an increase in seizures connected with epilepsy.

The 5-foot-11, 225-pound linebacker will continue to work with the Tigers as a student-coach.”

https://www.goupstate.com/story/news/2009/07/26/clemsons-stanley-hunter-forced-to-quit-football/29786071007/

In September 2009, Tigernet then reported:

“Former Clemson linebacker and current Clemson student assistant Stanley Hunter left the locker room before Saturday’s season opener against the Middle Tennessee State Blue Raiders, and thought he was prepared for the usual sights and sounds of Death Valley.

What he wasn’t prepared for, however, was the sight of sophomore linebacker Brandon Maye running around out on the field, wearing Hunter’s number 17 jersey, and it took time before Hunter could regain his usually stoic composure.

“I came out of the locker room, and I saw it, and I was speechless,” Hunter said after the game. “It was very emotional to see that, and I broke down. He came and picked me up today, and he said ‘I got you all night.’ It was just very emotional, and something I can’t explain. It is something that you always wanted, and you worked so hard at it, and then it’s gone.”

https://www.tigernet.com/clemson-football/story/mayes-tribute-leaves-hunter-speechless-8046

Pretty much says it all:
“I came out of the locker room, and I saw it, and I was speechless”

Apparently, it was the players’ idea. According to GoupState.com:

Teammates to honor linebacker Hunter Clemson coach Dabo Swinney said after Tuesday’s practice that some players will alternate wearing No. 17 in honor of Stanley Hunter. Hunter, a Byrnes product, lettered last year as a linebacker and led the team in fewest plays per tackle (37 in just 158 snaps). But the sophomore was forced to give up football this year because of epilepsy. “Recently some of the players have come to me and asked to wear No. 17 during the year in honor of Stanley Hunter. That shows you the level of respect the guys have for him. Brandon Maye is going to wear it for the first game and Willy Korn (his high school teammate) will wear 17 for the Georgia Tech game.”

https://www.goupstate.com/story/news/2009/08/19/clemson-experiencing-problems-at-placekicker/29789070007/

Wikipedia lists the players who took turns wearing the #17 jersey to honor Hunter:

“List of Players wearing #17 during the season:
• LB Brandon Maye
• QB Willy Korn
• FB Chad Diehl
• WR Xavier Dye
• WR Marquan Jones
• S DeAndre McDaniel
• RB Jamie Harper
• S Sadat Chambers
• S Rashard Hall
• CB Crezdon Butler
• LB Kavell Conner
• WR Jacoby Ford

Three of the players who wore #17 (Korn, Diehl, and Dye) were also teammates with Hunter at James F. Byrnes High School in Spartanburg,”

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2009_Clemson_Tigers_football_team

Bleacher Report summed it up as follows:

“It is obvious the love that is felt around the team for Stanley and I'm sure he will be remembered in Clemson football history for many years to come.”

He’s still involved with the team through the alumni gatherings and among other things he’s coaching at Mountain View Prep here in Spartanburg.

He also run Forever 17 with Jamie Harper. An organization that tries to spread the principles of teamwork demonstrated by everyone who wore his jersey that year.

U.S. Highway 17, known as Coastal Highway, is a 1206.5-mile-long eastern United States highway that runs from the south end at US 41 in Punta Gorda, Florida to the north end at US 11/US 50/US 522 in Winchester, Virginia, also going through Georgia, South Carolina, and North Carolina. The 221.5 miles of US 17 in South Carolina runs from the Georgia line on the Savannah River to the North Carolina line between Little River, SC and Calabash, NC.

Besides the Grand Strand and Charleston, interesting coastal areas of South Carolina US 17 passes include Beaufort County. Parris Island and the Marine Air Station offer something to sign up for if you're a youngster. With Hilton Head, Hunting Island, Harbor Island, Fripp Island, and the city of Beaufort, there is plenty for everyone to enjoy. Not sure where he lives, but Tnets elder statesman and distinguished gentleman lightbulbbill® hangs out in Beaufort, maybe because Lady's Island is just across the river. Beaufort, a town of 14,000 chartered in 1711, is the second oldest city in South Carolina after Charleston. The city's history, antebellum architecture, old moss-covered oaks, and laid-back atmosphere make great filming locations for movies like Forrest Gump, The Big Chill, The Great Santini, and The Prince of Tides.

lightbulbbill® took this pic in Beaufort!
