South Carolina Highway 12 is a 28.25-mile-long state highway that runs from the west end at US 1 in West Columbia to the east end at I-20/US 601 near Lugoff. SC 12 parallels I-20 and Fort Jackson leaving Columbia. Medal of Honor recipient Thomas Payne is from Lugoff.

Fort Jackson is a 52,000-acre U.S. Army Base in Columbia, South Carolina. It is the largest and most active initial entry training center in the U.S. Army, training up to 50 percent of the soldiers entering the Army each year, including 60 percent of the women. Approximately 45,000 enter basic combat training and 12,000 receive advanced training each year. Fort Jackson started in 1917 as Camp Jackson to prepare soldiers for World War I. then deactivated. It was reactivated for World War II. It was set to be deactivated after World War II, but remained open for the Korean War and has remained open since. Ken Berry, Jim Croce, and Leonard Nimoy (I saw him speak at Clemson in the early 80s) attended Fort Jackson at some point in their Army careers. Parts of the movie Renaissance Man were filmed at Fort Jackson.

DB Jayron Kearse arrived at Clemson (2013-2015) with a great family pedigree. His uncle, Jevon Kearse, was an All-American DB/LB/DL for the Florida Gators and an NFL All-Pro in a long NFL career with the Titans and Eagles. His cousin was former Miami Hurricane and NFL star DB Phillip Buchanon.

According to selected excerpts from Kearse’s bio on ClemsonTigers.com:

“Two-year starter at strong safety who was also a member of several special teams units … had 209 tackles, 12 tackles for loss, seven interceptions, 15 pass breakups, two caused fumbles and two recovered fumbles in 1,998 snaps over 40 games (29 starts) in his career … declared early for the 2016 NFL Draft … drafted in the seventh round (244th overall) by the Minnesota Vikings.

2015: Earned first-team All-America honors from the Associated Press and ESPN.com … second-team All-American according to CBS Sports and Sports Illustrated … first-team All-ACC (coaches) … second-team All-ACC (media) … fifth on the team with 87 tackles, including 6.5 for loss … also had eight pass breakups and five quarterback pressures in 856 snaps in 15 games (14 starts) … second on the team with seven special teams tackles

“He started just three games in his freshman season, playing in 12, but still managed to make 55 tackles and tie for the team lead with four interceptions. Kearse started at safety his sophomore campaign (67 stops, five for loss, three sacks, two interceptions) and continued that success in a first-team All-ACC junior season (62 tackles, 6.5 for loss, one interception, six pass breakups). The Associated Press voted him second team All-American in 2015, as well, as he joined a bevy of talented defenders and Heisman hopeful quarterback Deshaun Watson in putting together an undefeated regular season and national championship game appearance.:
