North Carolina Highway 103 is an 8.5 mile state highway in Surry County that runs from the west end at US 52 Bus/ NC 89 in Mount Airy to the east end at the Virginia state line where it becomes Virginia SR 103. Of course, Andy Griffith was from Mount Airy.
Mount Airy, a city in North Carolina on the Ararat River near the Virginia border, has a population of just over 10,600. The area was originally inhabited by the Cheraw people before European settlers of English, Scotch-Irish, and German background arrived in the 1750s. The town was incorporated in 1885 and thrived due to abundant natural resources like granite and tobacco and later expanded into textiles and furniture manufacturing. The town gained fame as the hometown of Andy Griffith and was thought to be the inspiration for the town of Mayberry in his 1960s TV series. Annual events and places like Floyd's Barber Shop and the Andy Griffith Museum are tourist attractions in town. Notable Mounty Airy people besides Griffith include Frank Beamer, Donna Fargo, Betty Lynn, and Major General Caleb Haynes.

The Andy Griffith Show. One of my all-time favorites, and the inspiration for the way I respond to O.J in this thread every day. There are at least a few episodes in which Andy says "outstanding" quite enthusiastically, and with a big smile.

A used car place in Simpsonville has a 64 Ford made up like Andy's car. Last time I saw it there was a need for a bit of sprucing it up. But if you like old cars it is interesting

One of the best sitcoms ever. The show is a must see for parents raising children. I made both of my kids watch all the episodes where Opie is being taught a lesson.

Great story! Mount Airy is such a cool town.
The view to see of Mount Airy is coming south on I77 off of Fancy Gap Mountain out of Virginia.
There are places that you can see both Pilot Mtn and Mount Airy together!

103 - Cincinnati Bengals Selected Jim Riggs with Pick 103 in the 1987 NFL Draft

The Riggs family contains multiple Clemson football players. Clemson TE Jim Riggs (1983-1986) went from Clemson to the NFL – while starting a family business along the way.
While at Clemson:
According to Sports-Reference.com Jim Riggs registered the following statistics at Clemson:
Jim Riggs (1983-1986): - 47 Receptions for 627 Yards (13.3 Average) - Receiving Touchdowns
After Clemson:
The Cincinnati Bengals selected Jim Riggs with the 103rd pick in the 1987 NFL Draft. According to Pro-Football Reference Riggs played seven seasons in the NFL: six seasons in Cincinnati (1987-1992) and one season for the Washington Redskins (1993).
https://www.pro-football-reference.com/players/R/RiggJi20.htm
According to the Greenville News, Jum Riggs went into business with his brother, Matt Riggs after the NFL. Of note: Matt Riggs was a DL at Clemson from 1984-1987:
Jim heard the loudest laughter toward the end of his NFL career, when he told people he was starting a hot tub business with his younger brother Matt.
Those skeptical laughs motivated the Riggs brothers to compete. Hot Springs Pool and Spas started in 1989 in a modest 3,000-square foot building near Haywood Mall. Twenty-six years later, Jim and Matt share this spacious office inside the main building of their 25,000-square foot facility on Woodruff Road. … "We're going to go the extra mile for the community," Jim said. "We're not just out here to make the dollar and go away."
The walls in this facility showcase the brothers' pride in some of their greatest achievements. Not the framed jerseys in the office, but the photos that line the hallways chronicling their captivating projects. From a simple rectangular pool to fire bowls and waterfalls, the Riggs brothers can recall their humble start and relive their rapid growth.

Jim Riggs’ son, Zach Riggs followed in his dad’s footsteps and played football for Clemson (2013-2016)! Like his dad, he also played TE.
Jim Riggs was inducted into the Clemson Athletic Hall of Fame in 2014.

103 - Stacy Seegars Registered 103 Knockdown Blocks for Clemson
15

In addition to being an All-American OL, Clemson’s Stacy Seegars (1990-1993) had his moment of glory – but it was another moment that might have been his biggest.
Sports Illustrated recently listed Stacy Seegars as being one of Clemson’s best OL in histroy:
9. Stacy Seegars - 1990-1993
After playing in just six games as a freshman, Seegars started 35 games over his final three seasons. As a junior, he tallied 103 knockdown blocks and earned second-team All-American honors. He was named consensus first-team All-American following his senior year. A two-time All-ACC selection, Seegars was inducted into the Clemson Athletic Hall of Fame in 2012.
https://www.si.com/college/clemson/football/clemson-tigers-football-offensive-linemen-top-10
GoUpstate.com provides Seegars’ biggest “moment of glory” while at Clemson in a 1992 game against UNC:
“Clemson guard Stacy Seegars had his moment of glory on a fumblerooskie play Saturday against North Carolina. And it took Seegars what seemed like 15 minutes to run 23 yards. "It was funny seeing all 320 pounds of him running down the field, " said Clemson center John Harris. "It was like it was in slow motion. It took forever. We should have called time out halfway down so he could catch his breath." The play made highlight shows on several cable networks. And it led to a field goal that gave the Tigers a 3-0 lead in a game they won 40-7. … On the second series of the game, with the Tigers on their own 37, quarterback Patrick Sapp took the snap and placed the ball on the ground underneath Harris' legs. Seegars then got on his knees and, according to Van Der Hayden, said to himself "one thousand one, one thousand two, one thousand three." Seegars then scooped up the ball. And while Sapp was faking an option to the right, Seegars ran down the left sideline. Seegars said if he had followed a block by Brent Lejeune and cut inside he probably would have scored.
https://www.goupstate.com/story/news/1992/11/10/fame-catches-up-to-clemson39s-seegars/29551250007/
Of note: The same GoUpstate article quoted Clemson’s OC regarding his opinion of Seegars:
"Stacy is having an All-American-type season," said Clemson offensive coordinator Larry Van Der Hayden. "He's everything you look for in an offensive lineman. He's got size and he moves well for a guy so big." Moves well? "Yes," Van Der Hayden said. "Maybe he doesn't look fast because he's 320 pounds. But he can run the 40 in 5.0 or 5.1, which is very good."
https://www.goupstate.com/story/news/1992/11/10/fame-catches-up-to-clemson39s-seegars/29551250007/
Arguably, Seegars might have had a bigger moment in the 1993 Peach Bowl against Kentucky. According to Sports Illustrated:
25. 1993 Peach Bowl: Clemson 14, Kentucky 13
With under a minute to play, Kentucky linebacker Marty Moore intercepted a Patrick Sapp pass, which appeared to have ended the game. However, instead of getting down and securing the win for the Wildcats, Moore decided to keep running, which allowed Clemson lineman Stacy Seegars to jar the football loose. Brent LeJeune recovered the fumble, and with 20 seconds left, Sapp connected with wide receiver Terry Smith on a 21-yard scoring pass for a 14-13 victory.
https://www.si.com/college/clemson/football/ranking-clemsons-26-bowl-wins
After Clemson:
Take the following information for what its worth (this site looks more like a blog than it does a traditional news site). That said, according to rettewcreative.com, Seegars is happy doing what he enjoys:
“Here is a guy that still looks like he can play. His arms looked bigger than my whole head and very much in shape. Why…this All American is living the American Dream.
He lives on a lake and he has practically built everyone of the docks on this lake. Yes, he is a dock builder and loves everyday of it. He had a chance to play for the Seattle Seahawks…but after a week of training camp, he knew his place was somewhere else. And as he states in the video, “It is so much easier to go to work, when you love what you do everyday.”
