While touring Ft Moultrie on Sullivan's Island which is East of Mt Pleasant SC and overlooks the harbor waters towards Civil War Fort Sumpter & the nearby Charleston waterfront which is a view like none other.
He was visiting there (captured?) in Jan 1838 for almost a month before dying of a throat infection.
Isn't he the symbol of Seminole warrior bravery & the Chief that a rider personates while galloping on a painted stallion b/4 the FSU football games?
Love history and this event, location & historical figure add to the fun & learning.

It was claimed during the 60s that his grave was stealthy dug up by some Florida folks and his remains moved to Florida. But Charleston experts said no remains would have been left after so long.

"Osceola’s legend continued to grow after his death, and in 1966 a Miami businessman named Otis Shriver even claimed he’d dug up the chief’s remains for use at a Florida tourist attraction. The National Park Service disproved this claim by disinterring the body in 1967, and Osceola was then re-buried adjacent to the original grave site."

LBB, if you love history you could spend weeks finding stuff like this in Charleston. I grew up just southwest of Charleston on Johns Island and every year in school we had field trips to Ft Moultrie, Ft Sumter (no “P”, just like Clem(p)son), the Charleston museum, the battery, and any number of plantation homes. When we were kids, there was a replica of the CSS Hunley downtown. Since then, they found and recovered the actual wreck and it is now available for viewing. That is a surrealistic tour for sure. Ft Sumter is great and you have to take a boat out to it because it is in the middle of the harbor. Enjoy your time there. It is a great place for history buffs.

But not enough for sure.
Now, the old spelling of Oceola does not coincide with our modern version that has a "S"..while the modern version of Sumter doesn't have the clemPson "P".
Oh, the Hunley sub story & day of funeral procession & burial is one of my best memories of all time since I parked a formerly owned camper van two blocks away from the Battery starting point..
And was a tourist participant from the ceremony, loading the sailors up onto the Lincoln-like wooden caissons pulled by 4-6 horses and then the humid multi-mile march down to the old Civil War cemetery.
One can not describe the sights & sounds especially with over a hundred widow impersonators dressed in black mourning gowns..
and the battalions after battalions from the 13 Confederate States that were backed up for blocks with each having its own bugle & drum Corps..
With each marching past the starting point one after another and their length stretching out for blocks but your ears could hear the music from each one simultaneously.
Saying, so sad a sight but unreal too since the visual & audio senses were amplified and one had a strange sense of patriotic duty to help bury these Confederate souls 100 years after their watery deaths.

Dying from a throat infection😂 his head was cut off. It’s buried elsewhere. I remember something about in Columbia. Perhaps the statehouse grounds??

Oceola (aka: Osceola) died last of Jan 1830 after a few days of having a throat infection.
And, that's a fact!

The wife and I viewed the actual Hunley after its restoration and it was just astonishing how those guys cramped into that little steel sub. It took a tremendous amount of courage and loyalty.

Since b/4 these sailors embarked on their successful torpedo run which failed only in that the charge caused repercussion damage to their boat too..
Know that two earlier test crews of 13 sailors total had drowned earlier.
Now that is bravery for a cause!
PS: can you believe this Sub was made of an industrial chimney smoke stack that was reinforced, in essence.

FSU works very hard at maintaining a good relationship with the Seminole Tribe. They do nothing whe3n it comes to the name Seminole without the approval of the tribe. They crown their homecoming king and queen in "authentic" Seminole headgear. Even the piping on the uniform is based on Seminole designs.
Note: This is not all altruistic. They know that if the Seminole Tribe ever complained about the name or said it was offensive then the name would be changed.

Likewise the Braves keep a close relationship with the Eastern Band of Cherokee Nation.

As a proud member of the Sullivan's Island Elementary Alumni Association, this was always an enjoyable walking field trip. I remember the teachers taking us over to the fort a few times throughout the year. I made all my kids go check out Chief Osceola's final resting place when we were in town from Hawaii. Took them to Fort Sumter as well, but it was a bit of a letdown for them. Guess children being children, they were expecting to be able to fire the cannons or something.
Osceola is still one of the few military leaders that the United States was unable to force into submission. The Seminole tribe remains undefeated because of his efforts. Luckily, the Seminole football team hasn't had the same fortunes.

LBB, seeing those pictures brought back memories for me. In the early 70's Ft Moultry was going through a renovation in preparation for the 1976 bicentennial. I worked for a brick manufacturer in Myrtle Beach that used the same clay used for the manufacture of the original Ft Moultry brick so we got the order to make the brick for the restoration. Because of the special size and other requirements the brick were very difficult to make losing a much higher percentage to cracking, etc. We had to make several runs to meet the order. The good thing about the excessive cracking, it made the brick look aged and old (see the pictures).
The solid brick pavers in the pictures are some of the brick we made as well as probably 100 K used throughout the fort. I feel it was an honor to be a part of the restoration.
