Kudos to him for persevering.
I read somewhere years ago that the 1980 UGA team had about a handful of players who actually graduated and moved on to successful careers. It was likely one of the anecdotal sparks for today’s emphasis on academic success.

and their academic struggles. Dooley vehemently defended them and said several had gone on to successful careers outside of football.
Of course Jan Kemp had another side of the story where some players were barely able to read or write in freshman English classes, but she was encouraged by the athletic department to pass them anyway. When she refused, she eventually lost her job, but later sued and won in court. It was a major turning point in the emphasis of the academic side of student-athletes.
