If Dabo doesn't want to hang 70 on Muschamp and his band of window lickers after the "your wife was hitting on me" comment somethings wrong. You can say he was playing around if you want but he was intentionally trying to embarrass Dabo. There's a lot of players playing their last game in Death Valley. I know Ben and Deshaun will show up ready to mercilessly beat some coot arsse

I'd love to see 70, but Carolina actually plays decent defense. Where they really stink is on offense. I would imagine something in the order of 35-3, with the Tigers pounding and hounding the Coot qb all over the field.

Cannot think of better time to practice the onside kick
Oct 10, 2016, 7:39 AM

- live action and up by 30+ is perfect for that. Why wait until you have to try it? I have no problem at all especially considering the 3rd quarter play we have had this year to date.
I hope we get to practice it more while being up by 30+ again.

I thought the exact same thing! Perfect practice time!
People get mad when he doesn't run the score up, then they get mad when he does... It doesn't make any sense to me.

The timing of trying to work new things live game was perfect.

As the game was clearly not in doubt. While the score meant they wouldn't win BC was still hustling, so you got "live game" effort from the opponent. If you get it, great, if you dont, the way the D played you feel good taking that chance. Ok, they scored. I'm sure the chickens would find a way to spin it like they do their magical 5 point schtick, but in the grand scheme, working on new things, and creating depth at your #2&3's can't be subsituted. I'm amazed at how many people are suprised that we have done well after losing so many defensive starters. Look at how many of those freshman are getting live snaps, and rotated in. That means by the time they are starters, they have played beside veterns a lot, and are fairly experienced. Pretty good philosophy for a guy who so many still think of as just a cheerleader or CEO. Well this CEO now cheers for a top fortune 500 company.

I'm happy that he has realized that it is the opponents responsibility to stop us---not ours! Dabo continues to mature as a head coach & he's responsible for our teams complete preparation. Put the players in each & every potential situation so they are familiar with it at any time in future games. That's a champions mindset!!
I'm also happy that he is playing as many of the backups--2s, 3's and 4's-- and they are gaining experience for the future.

I hate media outlets. No one complained when Michigan went for two and GOT IT against RUTGERS, college football's worst team.
Oh, by the way, they hung 78 on them with starters still in till the last play.

It's the one element that has been missing from this program. I'm sick and tired of playing to protect a lead, only to see the other team have a chance to win the dadgum game. When we get 'em down, we need to rip their hearts out and hand them to them. Then bring in the subs to continue the onslaught, not just hand the ball off to eat a little clock on the way to three-and-out. Killer instinct. Domination. Imposing our will from start to finish.
I want to see the subs practice that, not just coming in to sit on a lead. Let them practice imposing their will. It's not our job to stop ourselves, right? So why volunteer to do it?
If Scott Shaffer wants to cuss Dabo, call him a waaambulence. Let Donald Trump grab his kitty parts. Who cares?

Totally OK with playing to our standard. However, I don't think we needed that play at that point on the game. Gave them great field position and I would rather save that wrinkle for when it's needed. Wasn't going to effect that game either way so why do it? With that said, the man can coach so keep on keeping on brother!

That's exactly the point it couldn't change this game but it could be a difference in the future and you want live game experience when it does.

Bc he is the HC in charge, and that was what he wanted to do, and he doesn't have to get anybody's permission to do so, all he has to do, is to do it his way. His way has been working, and if he see's a way to make it even better he should go for it!!!!

though most people, including writers, pundits, fans, don't really get this "best" stuff. Cain's lack of following directions being a perfect example. He did his own thing, not what was best for team, and this can be very costly down the road when it comes up again.

Heres my thoughts on this
Oct 10, 2016, 9:27 AM
|
|
I have been extremely disappointed in Dabo for playing a "friendly" game of football for all these years. Taking his foot off the pedal when we are up a couple scores and more times than not the team making a come back. I love that man to death but his bleeding heart is one thing i have had too much of when it came to not running a score up to put a game completely outta reach. The tOSU's, Bamas, Louisvilles (this season), FSUs (of seasons past), & Michigans of the college world dont take their foot off the other teams neck and they are looked at as "Championship" teams because they are demolishing opponents. If it came down to 2 teams, one being Clemson & one being a team that has demolished people who do you think would get into the playoffs? I dont care what others say, style points matter nowadays. Glad Dabo is finally seeing the picture. Go Tigers! ! !

Have you even watched or read any sports analysts this year? Try to find a few who aren't predicting us in the CFP. We'd all like to see 100-0 but the fact still remains...Win em all and we're in. We're not Houston/Boise/et al. Clemson is a championship caliber team regardless of your doomsday scenarios.

would do such things during a football game. He basically said (over and over) - a coach has to prepare his team for these situations for when they actually matter.

To Coach Swinney:
Ignore the nea sayers.
Regarding the onside kick: Consider me in full support of what you did. It is about coaching. It is about teaching. It is about learning. I get it. I got it the minute you called the play.
Regarding your discussion with Cain: If I screw up, even at my age, I still expect to get a firm voice of reason come my way. Anyone should. To not expect discipline is prideful. And there is a lot of self centered people out there. I get it and I got it the moment I saw it.
Being prideful and having Pride are two very different things. Apparently not everyone understands that.
It is arrogant of peple to even question your motives or decisions. As long as you are doing the right thing. And it seems to me you are doing the right thing.
Keep up the amazing work you are putting in place with these young men. It is truly a blessing to watch and from which to learn.

again, these things usually work on the practice field. Try it in a game when its not on the line. And when 2nd and 3rd teams are in -let them go. you might need them in a critical situation. I remember when the 81 team hung 84 on Wake Forest and the media tried to get their coach to blast Danny for running up the score. His answer was it is Clemson's job to run their offense, its our job to stop them and we didn't.

I've been begging for a 60 min complete game for quite awhile now. Last year we literally took our foot off the gas every 3rd qtr. This ain't a lil boys game, don't feel Sry for nobody. I loved every bit of the B.C. game, you never know when you really need to kick an onside kick(saban), go for 4th down late, or a late 2 min drill to win it. It was all good live game practice.

It's a dumb move, but has nothing to do with sportsmanship

BC is a full member of the ACC. They have access to the same resources as we do. They choose to not support football as we do. Thats completely different than running up the score on SC State or Furman etc where they don't and can't play on the same level footing as Clemson.
But why it was a dumb move is that there is no reason to show that we have that play in our playbook when we are up 32 in a game where we don't need the points. Its kinda like how we showed the pass play to Wilkens out of the jumbo package with him and Big Dex against Troy. There are some things that you just don't need to have on film for other teams to scout.
And the whole needed the practice mantra doesn't fly either. We practice against ourselves. Our 2nd teamers are better than BCs 1st teamers.

HURT FEELINGS?!?!?!

Like most of you, I'm a die-hard Clemson fan and haven't missed a home game in years.
Though opinions are like @**holes and most stink, here's mine:
5 years ago we were happy to beat Carolina. 4 years ago we were happy to have a 10-win season 3 years ago we were happy to beat ranked opponents on main stages and keep the glory that made this team relevant 2 years ago we were happy to not have to hear about ########## due to a HC that adamantly defends this university and team. 1 year ago we went to the national championship and had Alabama use every trick in the book to beat us any way possible. (a 5-time winner in the last 10 years) and made that the best NC game in the last 15 years.
Clemson fans: get the F over it. This man loves this university - he's not scandal-plagued - he's actually a great role model for the kids on the field - he's not stupid - doesn't say dumb sh*t on interviews and is a good person in general.
If you're problem is that he tried an onside kick (as practice) while routing BC........GET OVER IT.
Some people really LOOK for things in life to b*tch about. Don't be one of them.

Go get them coach. A good team needs to go 100% and not back down. Do i think Dabo would blow out Furman, no, but If the chance arrives he should Bama. Dabo I have your back. Make a decision, enough said.

first of all, let's not reduce it to an "angry segment" of the fanbase. The motive of wanting to practice an onside kick in a live game situation is a fine reason, and it suits me, but the basic objection to kicking an onside kick when you're up 35-3 isn't exactly an objection emanating from anger or or being a malcontent fan. Good grief.
But the larger issue of not letting off the gas frequently reduced to arguing against one of two common errors - blind commitment to playing not to lose, and blind commitment to aggressiveness. the trick isn't which to pick, but WHEN to pick which. If, like coach said - if the onside kick was about taking an opportunity to practice that play, then it probably has little to do with whether or not to take their foots off the gas. Although I will say from that transcript that it was a bit confusing, he was asked about the onside kick and then veered off into the play prior to the end of the half. But I take it he was answer about the onside kick too.

The killer instinct! I've called in several times to WCCP to voice my opinion. Dabo lets his foot off the gas too much. Norte Dame, Louisville '15, '16, and many other times. He would get a comfortable lead, and the play calling looked like Rob Spence was back. Teams would score, gain momentum, and we would end up in a dog fight. That could have been a blowout. You don't see Meyer, or Saban get conservative with a lead. You score u til the other team quits. Then, you score some more. I felt this would cost us a big game someday down the road. I hope Dabo has learned this lesson. I think it was the final step he needed to become the best in football. I never want to see complacency in our team. We should run our aggressive offense until 7 minutes remaining in the fourth quarter. If the score is 222-0, Cumberland should have brought som ball players! There's a little Ga Tech reference for ya! I'm glad to see the killer instinct arise! Let's go win the National Championship! See you in Tampa! Go Tigers!

John Wooden won 8-9 championships without berating players

And I personally feel he set the gold standard.
But not everyone coaches like he did.
I love CDS, but I wrote an email to a friend almost a month ago that Coach Swinney
had taken the desire for a championship a little too much to heart.
It appears he feels he has to win one while Watson is here
or possibly he'll have missed his best chance.
JMHO....
As for the on-sides kick: not classless, and kudos to BC
for having their team ready to defend it.
Fact is, they were better prepared Friday than we were in the Natty. Just saying.
Coaching is about preparation, preparation, and preparation,
and that doesn't change with the score or the stakes....

And I agree that he sets the Gold Standard but I think Dabo is more like Wooden than not. For example, he wants the team to play to a certain standard, focusing on the team's own performance instead of the opposition, which was also one of Coach Wooden's primary trademarks. Similarly, Dabo doesn't want the team to worry about things out of its control but simply be the best team it can be.
Think it's important to remember that Wooden coached some of the greatest players to ever play college basketball (Alcinder and Walton, in particular, just to name a couple). One thing both Dabo and Wooden quickly recognized is that talent is the single most important factor to forming a championship team. Gotta have great coaching, but without great players, a team will only get so far.

do not feel it's necessary to apologize for success. I love the "will not be denied" mindset in everything coach Swinney teaches. Give them hell coach!
