I've read its to avoid injuries and collisions but I have seen so few it seems to be a solution to something that isnt that much of a problem.

Yes, the batter-runner would be safe since the fielder would be treated as not being on first base. It also goes the other way. The batter-runner can be ruled out on appeal if they only touch the white base if there is a play at first. But, on dropped third strikes, if the fielder is drawn to the colored base side then they can use that base and the batter would need to use the white base.
