Hello again. Coming to Clemson. Need input.
May 5, 2013, 3:29 PM
|
|
Two CFB fans here (CO and MA). We travel the country each year looking for good football and good fun. Clemson vs. Noles this October. No we are not Nole fans in disguise, just hard core CFB fans.
Anyway, which is better for a Friday night meal before the game....
Pixie and Bill's?
Calhoun Corners?
We usually eat steak. If there is a better place to eat steak in Clemson, let us know.
Many thanks. We look forward to seeing y'all in October (yes, I can use that word. I grew up in The South).

I'm sure someone else will chime in on which is better. If you are coming to clemson Friday before the game I assume you have a hotel in Clemson. If not you will have to find one in the surrounding area, Anderson, Greenville, etc. If you do have a hotel in Clemson you are in luck. It will be a huge weekend and the place will be packed. I hope you enjoy your trip. Be sure to arrive about 5 hours before the game. People hoping to drive in just before kickoff will get caught in traffic and likely miss the first quarter. Tailgating, no matter if you drink alcohol or not, is a tradition that should not be missed.

Pixie and Bills and Calhoun Corners are both very mediocre and way overpriced. Service is also bad. Longhorn in Anderson is not far away or try the Italian spot downtown next Tiger Town. Very good and inexpensive.

Both are excellent choices and you will not be dissapointed. Be sure and get to the stadium around 4 to 5 hours before kick off. Most anyone will feed you..... simply ask.

Try to eat at a local restaurant, Calhoun corners, pixie and bills, etc. Suggesting someone to eat at a chain restaurant is the same thing as telling people to buy Clemson gear at Walmart vs shopping at Judge Kellers or any of the other family own businesses that are the backbone of Clemson's commerce. Just my 2 cents. People can eat at chain restaurants all over the country. Local restaurants have local influences on their menus. Chain restaurant menus are decided by people who work in glass buildings in NYC.
Sorry about my rant on chain restaurants but how many times can you go to an Olive Garden?

Calhoun Corner and Pixie & Bills are both owned and operated by the same people. With that said, the dining room at Calhoun is better. I prefer P&B though. I have never been disappointed there, and one of my meals at Calhoun the steak was overcooked and rather bland. It might have just been a bad one since other meals were good and I know people who swear Calhoun is better than P&B. In reality, I don't think you can go wrong with either.

You should be more concerned about where you sleep than where you eat a steak!!! Rooms near Clemson will be very, very difficult to find for the FSU game. Clemson is a much different environment on game days than other places that you have visited. There will probably be close to 100,000 people in the area for that game and Tigertown 'ain't ' no metropolis.
I am betting that you will say it was the best football weekend of your life. GO TIGERS..

If you come to Clemson and want a steak, and do not go to Calhoun Corner's you have a problem. Ruth's Chris is like the Wal-Mart of steak, screw that chain. The Peddler (Greenville) is very good as well but not quite as good as CC's. Get a reservation and enjoy.

CC and P&B

I worked at CC during my Clemson days. And now CC and P&B are owned by the Coronzes brothers who worked at CC back then, so CC is special for me. But I had my rehearsal dinner at P&B, so it also is special. For the best cheeseburger in town, don't miss Goobers. Mac's is way overrated and they are also rude in there.

I'd go for Calhoun Corners and get the filet mignon with crab on top. My buddy used to work there when we were seniors and it was #### good. After that, try to make it down to Tiger Town Tavern for some drinks.
