I was watching the weather on the local morning news and thought the end of the world was coming but it was all about the mid 90s are coming. Dogs and cats are going to fry in the yard, there may be electrical rolling black/brown outs, find cooling shelters like the public libraries, stay inside/shelter in place and of course keep yourself and your pets hydrated. IT'S Summer!
That made me think about growing up here in Upstate SC so I took a look at temps when growing up. In June 1964 high temps for 10 of 12 consecutive days were above 90 degrees up to 97. In June 1965, there were no highs in the 90s with 89 being the highest temp and in June 1966, there were 6 consecutive days with high temps 90 or above sandwiched by 89 and 87.
After all that, my brother and I survived. BTW, we played in the woods, in the creek, rode our bikes, walked to the store a couple miles away looking in the ditches for empty bottles to get a few cents, we played baseball, cut grass, and did it all without having AC in our house. We have all been spoiled! SMH

Luckily down south most people have AC, unlike many people in the north who get crushed by the heat.

Agree. That's a choice though and one I haven't really understood. I've spent a lot of time in New England and a lot of the time it's survivable without AC, but on the days when it's hot, having at least a window unit doesn't seem like a foolish or expensive choice.
My son lives in the Jackson Hole area and has made the same choice to do without AC. It's less humid than the NE or New England, but it still isn't pleasant when it's in the mid to upper 80's.

The worst night of sleep I ever experienced was when I went to visit some family in New England a few years ago and it was the hottest week of the summer... 95 during the day, about 85 degrees after the sun went down, but still 90 degrees in the house at night because they had no AC. Had all the windows open, fans blasting, but still absolute misery trying to sleep in that heat.

Back in the mid 80s, for about 3 years, we lived in South Attleboro, MA just a stones throw from Rhode Island and got used to no AC. I left there in November 1987 and went to IL where the first house I bought had no AC. I did eventually have it installed.

I grew up on a farm in the low country! We worked outside in the heat, picking watermelons, cotton, baling hay without AC. I look back on those days and wonder how we made it. For a time we didn't have electricity which tells my age, but we would open the windows in the evening. I don't remember suffering, but then youth makes a lot of stuff bearable. Those were tough times, but wonderful times as well. Makes me appreciate how blessed we are now!

for 40 years after a guy I worked with who grew up in Abbeville SC said they always had snow at Christmas when he was growing up. I told him he was full of it. That prompted me to get daily records going back to the early 1950’s for Greenwood which is right next to Abbeville. Heatwaves, droughts, freezes and floods have always been with us. During the time the guy was growing up- no snow at Christmas! Weather people are like news people. Sensationalize it to attract viewers.

I grew up in Ware Shoals in the sixties and seventies with no AC. We had what they call an attic fan, we would open the windows and turn on the attic fan at night. It would draw air through the house right up into the attic. Very comfortable.

Had an attic fan in Orangeburg - no A/C except for my parents BR window unit. With my BR window open, that fan would pull so much air I needed a sheet for cover due to cooling effect of evaporation. At times it was fairly cold.

Growing up in the 60s and 70s, we had a window unit AC but only ran it during the day a few times per year. The rest of the time we had an attic fan for cooling. I remember lying in bed with the windows open and the fan pulling in the cooling breeze at night. Cant imagine going without AC now but we easily survived growing up which means we have collectively grown soft.

but not cooling off at night. We deal with that in Florida every summer, instead of cooling into the 70;s at night, it stays in the upper 80s and the AC runs through the night. You will be dealing with the same.

yeah, cooling 275 sq feet is real burdon on the enviroment.
That's also what the other 40 million RV owners in the U.S. say about cooling a 275 sq ft RV. You can do the math.

Right, because I leave the AC running 24/7 in a camper, that is 30 miles away. And even worse, I turn the AC down to 60 in my house when I go camping!!!! you don't do the math, or at least think things through before you attempt to paint an erroneous picture.

Yep my bad. Only 11.2 million RV owners and 40 million people go RVing per year. I could care less what you do with your RV and home ACs.
But don't try to turn this into a climate issue. Dramatics by the local weather people won't change it. Everyday can't be an alert day for heat or rain. It's hot because it's summer (happens every year about this time) and not because a herd of cattle farts in Texas.

98 degrees and 75% humidly was an average day and 80 degrees was an average night.
My kids are home from Clemson now and they keep the thermostat at 68.
This is why my kids drink White Claws while i drink burboun with ice cubes made out of evecrlear

We are more soft. I spent summers working in tobacco in SE NC, staying in my grandparents non AC house. I also worked during college in a paper mill in NE SC in the summer where it was just shy of hell temperature wise.
As kids we played outside all day in the summer.
Humans regularly exposed to heat and being intensely active in the heat, not only increase the size of our sweat glands, but increase the sweat gland numbers.
While I'm much softer now and don't like the heat, I still get lathered up very quickly and can cool off by sweating unlike a pig.
So get out there folks, embrace the heat and over time, you'll be a more effective cooling machine yourself.

You were young. That heat kills elderly people, babies, and people with health issues in the Neast without AC when these crazy heatwaves hit. Does in Europe as well.

just like mine. Woke on summer mornings, ate a pop tart or a bowl of cereal, put on a pair of cut off blue jean shorts, no shirt, and got on my bike and met up with othet kids in the hood. We may have ridden miles away from home. Gone for hours and hours. Back roads, empty abandonded shacks and houses and cemeteries in the woods, the corner store, fished in creeks and ponds, built forts and treehouses, etc.. No AC in the house until I was about 12 yrs old, when we got a window unit. Until then, it was raised windows and a giant window fan, literally sticking to the sheets all night. It was hot as ####. Somehow we survived. I guess not knowing any better helped.

physical struggling. Thanks to tech and stability, life gets easier. The average person will not seek out difficulty and instead embrace an easier life. Having easier experiences every day make an average person softer and less acclimated to toughness. This gets worse until the civilization starts to fall apart and a group of hungry, jealous people eventually overtake the previous softer civilization. And the cycle restarts.

I came from the upstate to Columbia in 1962 via Uncle Sam and it
was hot,hot,hot.I moved to Columbia in the 80's and it's still
hot,hot,hot.Not global warming just geographical location.

74 normally. But when the temps get to mid 90s and above (like this weekend) I set it up to 75 and use a couple ceiling fans to circulate the air and all is good. There's no escaping outside work at the farm. After spending a 2 or so hours in 95+ temps, come inside or sit in the shade to cool down for about half an hour and go at it again. I guess it's all relevant to tolerance and conditioning.

I grew up in Johns Island in the 1960s and 70s. We put a couple of window AC units in in the early to mid 70s. No AC before that. When I was a kid I couldn’t sleep unless I was sweating. I remember a drought and heat wave in the mid 1980s (either 1985 or 86) when we lived in Florence and the temperature was over 100 degrees for something like 13 straight days then we got a little rain one day that was in the 90s then another week or so over 100. It was so hot farmers couldn’t grow hay and had to bring hay in from Kentucky and Indiana. A few years later we lived in Kentucky and they had a pretty severe drought and the farmers from SC returned the favor.

I can remember working all day in the heat. Would drink a couple of gallons of water during the day and never go to the bathroom once. Sweat poring out as fast as you drank

we had a big attic fan that would damm near pull the curtains off. I hung out in my mom's restaurant and a friend's house that had a couple window units. Or we would go to a movie downtown, those were all air conditioned. It was 15 cents to catch a bus from the Welcome community to Main St Greenville. Saturday movie matiness was 6 Coca Cola bottle caps and I always had a bag full. It was the Bijou or the Carolina, I forget. We'd stay until they run us out. Then go to the Army/Navy store and buy M-80s.

highest in history....actually for the past 150 years of recording temperatures the climates in every area is nearly the exact same.
Living near Charlotte, NC there are temp recordings of 104 degress for several days straight back in 1954.....Did they think the sky was falling, end of times, maybe but learn from history and understand this is nothing new.... heat waves have been around as long as this Earth has been around.
Nothing new, just hot. I do enjoy some folks sitting around thinking end days are here, to each their own but I will simply live and keep doing what needs to be done and just sweat my ### off as always lol

My grandpa owned a construction business growing up and we put down asphalt as well. I spent several summers in high school laying asphalt in the upstate. Looking back it’s something I’m glad I did because it’ll make you appreciate just about any other job. We paved the Waffle House parking lot in Clemson after my junior year. That day I wore tennis shoes to work for some reason. And by 11 o’clock the soles on my shoes came off. The asphalt is so hot when you walk over after it’s fresh it’ll melt the glue that holds the soles on. Not to mention it was already in the mid 90’s that day. Not a fun job to do for sure.
