Watched the FSU game verses SMU. My two cents.

DJ didn't play all that badly. He's not mobile or a good runner, and he's also good for a dumb pick-six or fumble, but it was his WRs and TEs dropping everything.
The team is undisciplined with way too many stupid penalties at the worst times. The secondary blows coverages and tackling is not good.
I think FSU has talent (especially at punter), but does not look well-coached to me. DJU can make the throws but gets rattled too easily.
I think Clemson needs to come with all kinds of blitz packages, run Mafa, and do anything you can to confuse a weaker secondary who bites on everything. Finally, run Cade early and often!

I’m sure there’s others who might have a more data supported analysis, but it just seems like we blitz much less than the BV era and get home even less.
I hope you are right and we pressure DJ into….well, just being DJ.

Correct. We have become a "Bend but don't Break" defense under Wes. I don't like it either. While you are bending and giving up tons of yardage, our high powered offense is over there drinking gatorade.

BV was the King of bend but do not break... Goal line stands were the specialty of Clemson football. They still continue to do it when healthy, but during BV days the other team inside the 3 yard line hard a VERY hard time scoring....
A good goal line stand is as good as it gets in football IMO. I love it.
Wes has continued the bend but do not break mentality with less talent....Yes, less talent. Very good talent no doubt, but not to the level it was in the early to late 2010's. BV had some serious studs at DT and DE, Lawrence and Wilkins will go down as the best tandem to ever line up at DT in college football history. You simply do not get that kind of talent often, and they were some bad dudes that loved to stop teams when it mattered, at the end zone.

Yes, you have to make DJ uncomfortable and force him to move his feet. If you don’t he can hurt you with the strong passing arm and years of experience he had. Our pass rushing has been nothing like the BV coached teams. We left Stanford’s QB back there a long time and most decent QBs are going to find an open WR. You can’t cover a guy forever. We used to not give a QB time to think

they just kept shooting themselves in the foot. Some things that concern me: They did a good job of running to the outside They often stopped the SMU running game They have a history of blocking kicks
Some things in our favor: We can count on DJU to throw at least 3 balls through the receivers hands because of no touch They will blow pass coverage at least twice Cade will break at least one run of 20 yards
What I hope: They don't correct all of the mistakes (or even most of them) they made against SMU. I am afraid they might do like we did after the UGA game and correct the little mistakes and give us fits.

did you actually watch the game or look at the stats? FSU rushed for total of 63 yards with their lead rusher having 67 yards on 15 carries (not great but not horrid) and a long rush of 12 yards so at best the outside running game was successful twice. FSU gave up 204 yards on the ground with the SMU leading rusher having 129 yards on 17 carries so that's hardly "stopping the run". FSU has been abysmal all year running the ball and their run defense hasn't held up to teams trying to run the ball.

and have not looked at the stats. FSU's running stats held down somewhat by sack numbers, but they weren't that great. As I recall most of SMU's rushing yards came late. Like I said FSU seemed to shoot themselves in the foot especially in the first half. SMU did the same thing in the first half. As the Tigers have shown attention to detail makes a big difference and if FSU starts doing that they will give a lot of people fits. I hope they don't figure that out until 2 weeks from now.

Yes, DJ played poorly. DJ loses confidence and the team follows suit.

3 completions below 50% with 2 TDs and 3 picks with a fumble and QBR of 13.2. He's a bad QB.
We've seen this movie before.
Clemson was able to get almost 1,000 yards rushing out of DJ in basically 2 years, including 545 yards and 7 TDs his last year. So far, FSU has gotten -8 yards and ZERO TDs out of him. He's not a great runner by any stretch, but, when used properly, is the best way to get blood out of that turnip.

The whole team loses their confidence.
DJ needs to do what it takes to win and help his team. Allowing the OC to use his limited running ability more would probably help their efficiency.

If you remember, DJU has had lots of drops every where he has been. It is very difficult to catch those end over end knucklers when they are coming at you at 90 mph and dipping and darting like a white winged dove in a hurricane and then when it hits your hands with no spin it feels like a medicine ball made of hot lead. Dropsies are a natural occurrence.

Dropped balls seem to follow DJ wherever he throws. Some kind of bad magic? No, he throws a bad ball. Period. It’s not coincidence receivers across three different programs drop passes he seemingly puts in their hands.

DJ sailed some passes over their head, just missed and they dropped some. Looked like some of his games at Clemson. He will not change, but we need to bring pressure all game, mixing up blitz and coverage packages! That slows down DJU.

I’ve heard that he isn’t playing and may in fact be finished. Those are some great thoughts, but I think you may worry over games more than even I do. And that’s saying something.
FSU and DJ are tuuuurible, god awful. They can’t score on anyone. They average I think 13.5 a game. It seems like it would take a collapse of unseen proportions for Clemson to leave there with an L.

Did you see how they played in their bowl game last year?
On a more serious note, the team has playmakers, I won't argue that point. What they don't have is cohesion and a willingness to play together as a unit. I don't see a leader on the team the rest is willing to get behind, and I don't think a bunch of transfers are going to rally behind a freshman QB, especially if he doesn't come out strong.
Just my .02.

They’ve played:
GT L BC L Memphis L Cal W (really Cal gave them the game more than FSU won it) SMU L (major blowout)
None of those teams are ranked programs so Clemson was supposed to be the first major test for a preaseason top 10 team. How will this team that can’t compete with low level competition, handle a Clemson? Finally a legit team. What will they look like now?
Or..
You’re right to be concerned, it’s their Super Bowl, and they finally show the world why they were a playoff favorite.
That would be a bigger shocker than how bad they have been this year.

I'm expecting a win, but so was every FSU fan, along with most Tiger fans, when #3 FSU came to Death Valley in 2003 to play a lost Tiger team. We know how that ended.
It's college football. Anything can happen.

Excellent assessment.
Lets face it, they had tremendous aspirations and listened to the outside noise. Then ga tech won a game that could have gone either way.
BC shocked them right off with 2 quick TDs. FSU fought back to make it 14-6 at half. DJ5 not looking bad. They were moving the ball well early 3rd qtr and he threw a bad pick that BC returned to FSU’s 7 yard line. Went up 21-6. To me, that seemed to be the turning point of their whole season. After the nearly pic 6, you could see the players on the sidelines.
Not only did reality sink in that they were 0-2, but worse, they were 0-2 in conference play. Ever since, they've just been pathetic and gave up.

Eventually the drops have to come back to how he is throwing the ball. Drops have been an issue with a couple of dozen different receivers now for DJ. It can't be all of them. He throws too hard and without good spiral rotation and it equates to a difficult ball to catch.

You must really love DJ, you defend him regularly and his abysmal play. It's never his fault, is this a west coast bond type deal?
DJ is what held Clemson back while he was at Clemson. The roster was in a solid spot and the OL was decent(not good but decent). His second year as a starter I'll admit the wr corp was banged up but his lack of ability led to a few was transferring and killed the depth. He went to Oregon St and they said the same things about him there and had their fan bases arguing if he was an issue in big games as well. Now he's at FSU on his 3rd team and still has the same issues and there are fewer willing to blame everything else around him.
Honestly his issue is he never had to be a real QB and that's just how it played out in Cali. I don't think he ever had a private QB coach like many of these big time prospects and young QBs playing now had. He didn't participate in many camps either so scouting was a bit more difficult. His highlights were amazing deep ball after deep ball but you never saw him have to throw a guy open(outside of putting in front of the faster player on a streak) and turns out he never had to.

I don't think Cade will have to run much. No need to risk him. Secondary gets confused on crossing routes. LBs are either slow afoot or slow to react to RBs coming out of backfield on pass plays. (Wheel routes have been open and open often every game.)
DJ has not played well, but he has had little help. Dropped passes, poor protection, no running game, etc.
OL run blocking is poor, or worse.

FSU is a bad football team. They can't get out of their own way. This game could be close-ish for most of the first half because FSU does have some talent, but it will get out of hand. Clemson by at least three scores.
