and going All-In on the portal ?

Their 2025 class is currently 51st ... right behind BC, Iowa, and GT.

Not sure they can afford to do both. They burn lots of cash in the portal.

At this point the ACC has one 5* committed for the whole conference. I know things will change the closer it gets to signing day but that is not good for the conference.
Another reason for Clemson to get out now.

Agreed. Sadly, it takes $$$ to ink most 5 star players out of HS these days. Pure pay-for-play environment where deep pocketed private booster money offers a clear advantage.

I don't think it's sustainable. It worked last year but they want be consistent with so much turnover. All it takes is a few bad apples and you can lose the locker room in a hurry. Why would a HS kid want to commit to them when they aren't committed to you.

Yeah - last year they had a 6th year guy and team leader in QB Jordan Travis who had been a powerful force in the locker room and out on the field for a long while. They don't have that type of impact from within this year and I believe that's going to set them back with all the churn. I can say one thing - DJU and his 3rd stop in 3 years doesn't exactly check that box.

And I’m not sure it worked last year.

Some people figure they were undefeated and they were a really good team. Others figure that was not the case.

Either way, they were good, but not great.

They were a good team last year, until their entire two deep opted out at the end.

Bottom line is they built a nice team in 2023. But they are far from having built a good program.

Look at prime time. He’s building a one year team not a program.

Might be a little early to pass judgement. In ‘24 they had the 12th ranked high school recruiting class while still bringing in 17 transfers. That’s what’s crazy to me last year between transfers and recruiting they brought in 40 new guys! So they flipped almost half of their scholarships. I definitely don’t want to see Clemson do anything close to that; just 4 or 5 key additions is the sweet spot for the transfer portal.

With 22 million plus to pay players directly plus the NIL payments and you are going to see the portal be the primary recruiting source. 5* HS players will not sign w/o being paid BIG money. The game has changed. If you are not in the game and al you can get are 3* and a few 4*, you better have one heck of a great coaching staff that can develop the players.

Players better get their money now because when they don't produce the boosters are going to demand the coaches cut them and get a better replacement. The Not For Long (NFL) structure is coming to college football. Enjoy it players because the best time is right now. After this shakes out a lot of so called HS stars are going to find out that they have to perform in order to get paid.

In the next 5 years players will come in, make some money, and once they have used up all their eligibility transfering from team to team they may have some of that money left but they won't have a degree or any skill set for the working world. And, schools won't allow them to come back to school, on the schools dime, and get/finish their degree.

Just like the 60's and 70's

The 4-5 guy "sweet spot" is a one-time thing. Replacing those guys

probably will require more poratal guys 1-2 years later, on top of other areas of need that arise and the 4-5 goes to 7-8 in year two, then to 8-10 in year three. The portal needs tend to expand over time because they turn over quickly and developmental guys don't stick around behind them.

I think this is an issue the portal advocates miss. The portal is still new and we haven't seen all aspects of its affect on program building. To date, we've only seen the quick turnaround story.

Said the portal is new; so, there isn’t any trend data to suggest that selectively using the portal will destabilize a roster. In fact the opposite is true; every team who has won a natty since the portal was established has started players from the portal in said national championship games.

“It’s not the players you don’t get that hurt you; it’s the guys you get who can’t play”. That’s been the mantra for coaches since football began, but it’s not a factor anymore. If Jawja, 0310 state, or Bama miss on a recruit they just put em in the portal; we put em on the VLOG. It’s a competitive advantage that other elite teams utilize that will be incredibly difficult to overcome.

Coming the Willie Taggart disaster (aided by the decay of program in Jimbo's final seasons) & hitting bottom during Norvell's 1st 2 seasons (only 3 wins in 2020 + the Jacksonville State loss in 2021).

He needed to overall roster & did that, leading to mass improvement over 2022 & 2023 seasons. But getting left out the CFP led to that biting FSU in the @$$ when majority of team opted out of playing the Orange Bowl.

He will have to find a balance regarding HS players/transfers being brought in. Don't see things being sustainable for schools that rely on large transfer classes to build their roster every year. With all the safeguards being removed, those are the 1s most likely to jump ship once the next big shiny offer comes their way.

Some schools would start to ask the question... "Why waste all of your time and resources recruiting and developing a high school kid, when you can buy a player who doesn't need an adjustment period and has already had at least one year of development?"

These teams focused more on a portal strategy will still recruit some high school kids, but the main focus will always be on finding guys who can contribute immediately.

Clemson has an awesome class so far for 2025, but no Top 10 guys. That’s the one thing we haven’t done recently.

But it’s still a championship class.

I think fsu is still recruiting plenty good enough but yes they have to have a few transfers to be truly elite.

All these Universities using the portal are clearly targeting players to fill positions that is usually found through recruiting.

Dabo and company are making it very clear and obvious to these young athletes that those schools prioritize based on "portal recruiting" and not high school recruiting. I sincerely pray that Dabo obliterates FSU and all these other schools using this method. Let these parents and young guys know what is happening and why they are not top priority, even if they might be you still instill a level of disbelief in anything they might say or do.

Any parent wants to feel confident in the coaches to do what's best for them. And Coach Dabo Swinney has proven over his entire career that loyalty is life, it is the heart and soul of Clemson football. FSU can keep portalling until the school dies for all I care, I will continue to dislike/loathe the transfer portal even though I understand it can certainly help teams....I prefer recruit to your needs and fill in that way just like our Coach believes.

My hope/prayer is Clemson has a fantastic season and wins another National Title without a single transfer....then all this talk can be shoved in the faces of every single pundit out there.

I'm fired up, go Tigers!!

I concur dkmoore1975 To me FSU was an example for why the Portal "can be good and why it can be horrible last season"!

As others have already stated: "it's all good as long as you are winning"! But, when adversity hits, portal-minded(selfish) players tend to start thinking of themselves more and not the team.

Note also: Jordan Travis(i know he started at FSU) was likely the most underrated QB in CFB the last two season and the kid had a 6'7 and 6'4 WR who could go up and get it. It made them a special group; but you can't count on that happening all the time. Much like recruiting, period.

Bo Nix put up some good stats - but perhaps he never should have gone to Auburn in the 1st place(due to his Dad's name). I.E. perhaps he could have been that good from the start in a system that better suited his skills.

When college was about what school can get me into the career field I want( be it NFL or accounting or business ) kids were more cognizant of "fit and culture"! When the "OPEN GIVING of MONEY" came about it changed. Sadly, things could potentially go back to how it was back in the day when coaches would stock their roster with talent for the sole reason to keep them from their rivals. The TP is a necessary evil in my opinion; due to how often HC and Coordinators who may have recruited a player changes.
But, it should come with stipulations and limitations. "Governance"!

I like how Clemson is building it's roster. The fact few players transfer should be telling the rest of the football world "something". But, people still keep this doomsday, get with the times mentality. All because Clemson hasn't won a National Championship in a few seasons. They aren't easy even if everything is right, people. Even if all that people suggest happens; they still aren't guaranteed(ain't that right FSU). So, has FSU sold out to solely go after TP players: "who cares"!
That leaves some very talented football players in the State of Florida who won't have a home out of H.S. It's only going to help UF and Miami and "CLEMSON"!

If the money is essentially equal, then "fit and culture" will become the differentiator.

They've picked up 18 portal transfer players since the end of Nov. 2023. 14 of 18 are already enrolled.
With numbers like this, they may not be able to sign many out of HS.

Right now on 3 has Clemson ranked 4th and FSU 13th. FSU has their big recruiting weekend later this month. Norvell has improved HS recruiting every year. He used the portal so much his first two years because he had to. Look for FSU to finish in top 10 or very close.

This is all going to change again if thee House vs NCCAA settlement is approved...

If you think the portal and NIL wreaked havoc wait till that multi-billion dollar settlement hits... it's going to crush non-revenue (aka Olympic) sports at most schools and kill sports all together at smaller schools... and there is another case right behind it...
