He hasn’t made many hires

Bates was a great hire. Promoting Jeff Scott was a good move. Conn isn’t bad. People seem high on the Thomas Austin hire. Really the only terrible moves he made were leaving Tony in charge, hiring Grisham, and now promoting Streeter.
This isn’t Alabama, we aren’t replacing the entire staff every year. So there just aren’t as many chances to get lucky.

I'm not going into a debate about Elliott, but just curious why you think Grisham was a terrible hire? He's only be the receivers coach for 2 years and has had a pile of injuries at the position for each of those 2 seasons. Just judging him on receivers that stayed healthy each year I'd say he's done a good job. Last season Rodgers had the best season of his career, and Powell went from being a player who could hardly get playing time to one of the best receivers in the country during the 2nd half of the season. I'd also add that Williams was progressing very nicely late last year.
This year we saw Collins turning into a very good receiver late in the year even with our limited play at QB. There really weren't any other receivers who were fully healthy for more than a game or two this season. Even Ross was playing less than 100% for the part of the season he played in before missing the final few games.
Hard for me to judge him beyond that whenever none of his players could stay on the field for more than a game or 2 at a time.

As far as a name goes, no. BV was a known commodity

Bates was a home run hire but nobody outside of a Clemson football camp knew who he was.
Personally I think that was the last good hire Dabo has made. From there on it seems to be former players or college buddies.

The answers are: 1) Technically Dabo has hired only one new analyst - everyone else has been on staff and been promoted with big raises, 2) we do not know, and 3) hopefully C. Klubnick can save the 2022 Offense. Clemson is a force with a top QB.
The 2022 Defense will remain stout with the same coaches (minus studly BV) and strong starting personnel.

ONLY if they are able to keep recruiting at the highest level. The competition has gotten vastly stronger in the last couple of years. I doubt we’ll be able to raid the Georgia talent like we used to, especially if Georgia wins the Natty.

Was Venables a home run hire at the time...because Venables said it was a risky hire and he didn't even believe in himself back then.
The Scott and Elliott Duo was a home run if you're going by stats and rings.

Most folks, including Oklahoma fans, don’t recall that BV’s defenses at Oklahoma were not impressive at all in the latter years where he was the sole coordinator. They were very good when he was co-coordinator with Stoops and one or two years with Pelini. If I recall correctly his scoring defenses were often in the 30-40 range. He was in the pass happy Big 12 but still not nearly as good. I’m sure that’s why Stoops was bringing his brother back and demoting Brent back to co-coordinator. That is why BV didn’t have confidence. He was not getting the job done. I really questioned the hire by Dabo at the time but man it was spot on.

And this makes the Twitter post by Chavis, touting “BV’s Clemson defenses,” all the more ironic. Yes BV’s Clemson defenses were epic, and WAY better than his D’s at Oklahoma. He had a lot better players in Clemson. He didn’t suddenly learn how to coach when he got here. Jimmys and the Joes.

The type of DL you can recruit in the

Southeast is second to none.
All of Brent’s defenses had elite DL here. We didn’t have great depth and ran 3 down linemen a couple years but the guys we had were elite.
I’m curious to see if Brent will be able to match those stats that bonehead chavis was bragging about at Oklahoma

It all started with the DL IMO. Our DL was very good this past year, but was elite in 2016 and especially 2018. To show an example of this. I think most fans prefer the other team to punt when they have 4th and a yard, but I'd get happy when other teams would try this against our defense during those years because I knew our defense was more likely than not going to stop a team from trying to do a QB sneak or run up the middle on 4th and short and even 4th and inches.

that Dabo actually taught BV how to recruit better defensive players, how to recruit young men of good character and work ethic? Let’s face it, Brent is NOT sobbing and bawling on a syndicated national college football radio cast for nothing...saying stuff like he has grown more as a coach, a husband and father, spiritually, and so on under Dabo than at any other stretch of his life! Listen to what the man is telling you! Dabo may not have taught Brent the X’s and O’s of championship defenses, but I absolutely believe he taught him the nuances of how to build men of great character who will run through a wall for you. How to recruit at a championship level. I firmly believe this. I personally think Oklahoma may not be in the south, but is the quintessential college football blueblood. It should be just as easy or easier to recruit standout D linemen there. I think everyone, but BV, is missing the point that Dabo molded BV into the great defensive coach he is. Just my opinion.

With the way Goodwin called the D last week, it’s looking like a pretty solid one there. Dudes apparently a mastermind. Hopefully he will keep that kind of productivity going.

between Danny Ford leaving and the start of Dabo's string of at least 10 win seasons, Clemson had no season with 10 wins and averaged 7 wins a season for 20 years. Exactly which hire was so bad that it caused us to go 10 years with at least 10 wins a year, with a number of those seasons in the string ending in 11 to 15 wins.

I'm in my late 30's and even though I was alive during our previous 10 win season in 1990 I couldn't remember it. So in a way I had never experienced a 10 win season during my years as a Clemson fan prior to Dabo.

Depends on the definition of "home -run". I believe he knows a lot more about home -runs than you do.

You sound like a coot fan who needs big name coaches for their ego. They loved Muschamp and hated Beamer (at first)

Most didn't realize it was a HR type hire until he had been at Clemson a little while.

I remember people hating on hiring Morris because he was a "high school coach" and then people wondering what we'd do once he left. I then remember people hating on the BV hire because why would we hire a guy who had basically been demoted at his last job? Now, none of that means Dabo is incapable of making a mistake, but people act as if all his past hires were obvious hires where he went out and simply paid a lot of money to the biggest name assistants he could find.
