it sizzle and crackle before an immediate tremendously loud thunderclap? A dark cloud was a long way from my house and radar showed that it wasn’t coming my way. Haven’t been that startled in the last 54 years.

I had my fishing line hang in the air when I cast literally 20ft in the air, then my fishing pole shocked me, saw about 2" arc jump from rod to hand, then I dropped the rod, fell to bottom of boat right as a flash/bang happened just feet from me. I sat in the bottom of the boat for probably 15min trying to figure out if I pi$$ed my pants or just got rained on.

I remember being on the lake in a metal johnboat with a friend & got caught in a thunderstorm- that was quite the experience but nothing was as loud as this was today

From my experience as I have been close to lightning multiple times as I used to push the limits due to fishing tournaments or practicing. Often running to the landing or a good safe spot wasn't convenient so there were times I would tuck to the bank, close to trees so that I wasn't the tallest point around, but the loudest booms were always when lightning struck a tree very close by. I think it's the explosion within the tree that causes additional boom.
I would expect you could find a tree very near where your experience was that was hit hard by lightning.

few years ago but I was in my truck leaving work on our dirt road. It hit a pine tree right on the other side of the ditch and blasted bark and pieces of wood all over my truck. I didn't hear any sizzling and crackling but it's one of the loudest noises I've ever heard.

The entire mountain. The entirety of air was static. Our instructors made us ground all of our weapons and metal. Scary as Hades.

Mine was on Longs Peak in Rocky Mountain National Park. Up around 13,500 ft when one of the worst storms I've ever seen blew up and you could feel and hear the crackling of electricity before seeing the lightning. When you're above the tree line and look around and the rocks and you are the tallest things around, it's time to go. I didn't make it to the top coming up about 800 ft (in elevation) short. I don't know how it would have ended up but I do know I'm here today.

The lightning last night here in the low country was as sharp and loud as I have seen in quite some time.

The rule with 14ers in Colorado, and anywhere really, is be back below treeline before noon, for this exact reason. It is wild how quickly storms can move in at that altitude.
I work in Boulder and I get to see Longs on my way into work every day

The brightness of the light startled me more than the sound. I was looking straight ahead when it hit the shoulder of the road. Glad I wasn’t driving faster 1 or 2 mph faster.

I saw it explode a tree about 100 yards from me. It will give you a new perspective on the power of nature

Sitting on a porch saw lighting hit at tree about 75 ft away across the street. Heard some sizzle and a very loud boom! While lifeguarding in college 2 of us were closing up the snack bar/bath house and another life guard and a girl friend were in the water around waist deep when lightning hit a tree across the swimming area from them. It was a very loud boom and we ran out just knowing they had been hit, but they passed us running in to the bath house! They said they felt a good jolt through the water when it it hit.

Everything is okay - it was so fast and so loud that I have no idea where or if it hit anywhere nearby. I jumped about 10 feet back into my garage. Wife came to the door really quick to see if I was alright.

Take a good look at nearby trees in a year or so and you'll see where it struck - one will likely be dead or dying with a black streak down the trunk.
A few years ago I was sitting at the breakfast table with my back to the windows when lightning struck a power transformer on my property line about 75' behind me. I don't know how high I jumped, but I almost turned the table over. Not too long after, the nearest pine tree to the transformer was dead.

I was working during the summer of 1973, going into my Clemson senior year, at the Milliken plant in Pendleton. As I walked onto the loading dock to leave, I heard a sizzle and instantaneous loud bang. It scared me so bad that I went back into the plant and waited for the sun to come out.

Many years ago I was in the house when a storm started up. I went into the kid's toy room to look out the window at the storm. I felt static in the air, one of the battery powered toys chirped and them Boom! I jumped 3 feet straight up!

I worked at McCall RA camp for three summers. McCall is in the upper NW corner of the state in the Blue Ridge Mountains. I have been through many thunder bumpers and Kodak "Flash" moments. When the storm rages through the mountains at night a ghost story or two fits the moment. The story of the rabid 10 ft Grizzly punctuated by crisp crackling of lightning slicing through the night air followed by the sonic boom that shook the cabin did the job.

Don't remember hearing that sound but I do remember once walking into my parent's house and smelling what at the time felt like a metallic burning smell and thin within maybe 2-3 seconds BOOM! Biggest crack of lightning ever.
One other time in the middle of the night sleeping facing the window to our back deck I was awakened by a quick flash and then what sounded like a tank firing at our house. All the power went out, emergency backup on our security system was blaring. FD came out to inspect the house and attic around 3 AM. Next morning found a single nail hole in a gutter by the window that was black as tar. Also, about 50 ft away the top of one of the trees had all the bark blown off of it. Electrician said it probably hit the tree and ran to the gutter or hit gutter and maybe the force of the strike hit the tree. Crazy night!
