Hard to believe how disappointing our RB room has become..

Our best RB wasn’t even recruited by CJ Spiller (committed to Tony Eliot & Mickey Conn). Spillers back are Jarvis Green, Adams, Haynes, and EZ (all whom haven’t developed and can’t seem to earn playing time). Spiller is a legend at Clemson but our RB room has suffered under his responsibility of recruiting. I have hope in Gideon but he’s a true freshman. Should he get hurt we have zero depth and desperately need a portal RB. How can we (Clemson) not have a decent RB ?

conventional knowledge points to them being ready by 3rd year on campus as RS sophomores. Easy E ,well, even the great ETN wasn't ready as a freshman against the likes of Bama. That's why it was so important PM came back.

I have heard that elite RB's are getting upwards of 650k to 800k a year for their NIL! Could we pay that? Maybe. Would we pay that? No! I don't see how this is still considered an amateur sport. There used to be a rule that if you accepted money to play you were ineligible.
But times and rules change.

and up until the injury, he delivered. Haynes the primary back up, now he's hurt as well.
We honestly have no idea what the other guys can do. They were all just deep, depth due to Mafah being the clear #1

It's part of loving his players and allowing that to influence his decisions. Mafah deserves every time they called his number!
It all turned out well so no one should be whining about Phil playing.

Yes this was Mafah's year and up untill he got hurt he delivered. I don't believe anyone will argue that. Also no one can argue his heart. You can see him hurting out there and still trying to give 1000%. That's where the coaches needed to get another back ready and help with the load. When in the box score there are only 2 names carrying the ball (Mafah and the QB) there's a problem and that's what this post is about. Did our coaches recruit bad? Are our coaches not developing talent? Are our coaches making bad decisions? What is it? Something is definitely not right.

Why did ETN go to GA to split carries? Same could have happened here if we landed a good RB. In college football these days everyone splits carries. Work horse backs are a thing of the past. Our staff chose not to go get one because they’re stubborn

We didn't need a RB. Mafah was #1. Had a quality back up in Haynes. Adams was coming ong. EZ was redshirting so he only played in 4 games. Any games now do not count so he can play as much as the coaches like.

Only a freshman. Did you see him fumble the kickoff? This is what freshman do. Of not for #19 covering up the fumble the game would have been lost. We need to bring in a graduate or senior RB out of the portal while these other guys are developing.

I thought we "liked our guys.........."
Look, I actually like our RB room. Maybe give the backups more PT t/o year to gain more experience. Same situation when we didn't get Cade more experience when DJU was struggling. Labrums don't heal themselves. Just b/c a young kid makes a rookie mistake, is it really better to bench him and continue to play Phil who is at best @ 50%? Results say no.
Better get EZ some work in next 1.5 weeks....

I like the potential of the RB room. But when Phil Mafah rushes 17 times for 17 yards against an average Pitt team that SMU RB ran for over 160 against with 2 TD's, its reasonable to have questions.

but there is going to be a drop off between RB1, RB2, and RB3. That’s not a coaching/development/roster management issue, it’s the nature of the beast. From a roster management perspective, 2025 is when we need an RB, and we have filled that need with the #3 and #12 RB prospects in the country. On top of that, our third string RB hasn’t even shown fans what he can/can’t do and some of us are already complaining. Its bizarre.

That’s not how it works…you transfer to compete and possibly start and in some cases you play due to injuries ahead of you.
You are right, no one transfers to ride the pine.

This is Mafah’s last year (possibly last game should we lose to Texas). I think a transfer (a good one not just a depth provider) could have the potential to start next year. This would give time to bring Gideon along and also protects against injuries next season. It takes more than just one good back to have a great running game (rest through rotation). A elite back could easily come win the job for the coming season.

I would be so happy to be wrong. I want those guys to run wild on Texas more than anything.. but if they’re that good you would think we would have seen it come to light while Mafah was hurt. The reality is we need talent at RB and I hope CJ can get us some before next season. I absolutely love Gideon ceiling but I’m putting a lot of hope in a true freshman.

The biggest concern is player development…Mafah has had to play hurt for so long now because the coaches can’t even trust another running back to do all of the other things… that is mind-boggling and warrants his firing after the season as much as his recruiting failures

Hammerhead Adams

Dec 10, 2024, 12:35 PM

I think Hayes got the nod over Keith Adams Jr. due to being a change of pace RB from Mafah. Adams would be another slightly slower version of Mafah.
But, to me Adams was our best back coming out of Spring from the little I read/saw. I think Adams comes out and plays well next game. And folks will be on here surprised: except me.
Dude runs hard and angry! I don't care he maybe won't take it to the house on any given down(I think he can in the right circumstance). Just get 6.5 yards a carry and the rest will take care of itself.
People forget, this kid played at the highest level in the State of Georgia(who in my opinion has surpassed California in terms of producing CFB talent). Not as many, duh, but per capita Georgia puts out some outstanding football players.
Then he transferred with parents I assume out to Utah for his Senior year at least. Maybe Junior and Senior year! But, he and Mafah were 1/2 in 7A Georgia for RB before that transfer.
I think, if he's healthy and is capable in pass pro; he will help us tremendously.

The runnning back room is not disappointing, its the coaching. Clemson did a poor job with load management with Mafah. We have used him up and makes it almost impossible for him to be productive in the playoffs. If we would have used the other guys in the earlier games, Mafah would be healthy now. Also, yall trying to judge the other running backs and they have not gotten a chance to prove themselves in at game with meaningful reps. Jarvis Green for example was the Gatorade player of the year, MaxPrep 2nd team All American, Mr Football runner up and rushed for 2200 yards his senior year. He has only had 15 offensive snaps in 2 years. I will be supprised if any of the backs stay.
