Hard for sport to get any more heartbreaking than what happened to Furman

Last night. https://twitter.com/ncaabuzzerbters/status/1501017129478287361?s=21
The shot alone and way to go from the joy of making that shot under 5 to the pains of that shot going in. Such an extreme change in emotions. You can see the heart of every Furman player break when the shot goes in.
And considering the external factors it’s even worse. Furman has not been to the big dance since 1980. This is not one of those mod major programs that goes all the time. They have been arguably the most solid program in the SoCon for the last 7 years or so and yet still cannot win that elusive conference tournament.
The players and those close to the team will never forget the heartbreak of that moment. Brutal

The only good that comes out of this is if they can use it for inspiration for the program.

that dude bringing it up alone (not passing it down court), I said the Paladins got this. He's gonna have to hit a running 40 footer. Well, lol, you know the rest.

So heartbreaking that it made good morning America play of the day.
Too bad they won't at least get an nit bid.

The ending of that game reminded me of the Clemson loss to UConn and also of another heartbreaking loss that Furman had in the SoCon Tournament finals.
Growing up a huge Furman fan since that is where my mom and dad went to school, I attended many a Furman game at the old Memorial Auditorium in Greenville. There were several years in the early to mid 70's that Furman hosted the SoCon Tournament.
This particular year, Furman had a good team. Russ Hunt, player of the year in the conference and Roy Simpson to name a few. Furman was leading by one over East Carolina with less than 10 seconds left and Hunt going to the free throw line with a one and one.
Well, Hunt missed the front end, ECU rebounded the miss, player dribbled to half court and let it fly. It missed terribly, banging off the top of the backglass, but......right into a charging ECU player who laid it in as the buzzer sounded.
I think I was in middle school at the time and cried for several hours after that loss.
Just thankful that my dad is in a better place now and wasn't around to witness that crushing defeat last night!!
Furman hasn't been in the NCAA tournament since 1980 so it would have been cool to see that!!

Attended quite a number of the Poinsettia Classic games which included both the Tigers and FU most years. GHS played its home games at the auditorium for many years until the school was remodeled in the 90s and added a separate gym.

Never been to a game at the new facility. Went in for a Travelers Rest graduation a few years back. Furman has a nice campus.

Attended a CU game at the new auditorium at least 10 years ago which was a one off event for the Tigers there. Attended lots of FU games at Sirrine stadium and a few at the campus facility before moving to NC in the mid 80s.

Hate it for those guys but it would have been a heartbreaker for either. On a side note and Furman basketball I am remembering a game in Greenville’s Memorial Auditorium where the paladins upset the Villanova Wildcats. Will always be in the memory bank. Not sure if any of you remember that. Great day!

Yes....I was there for the Villanova upset! Also, remember Furman playing DePaul team with Joey Meyer coaching at the time. DePaul had Terry Cummings and several really good players. Really close game but Furman ended up losing it.

My dad worked with Bruce Evan’s dad and he would hook us up with tickets. Evans and Sullivan who ended up at Louisville were great back in that time at Hillcrest High School. Dang I’m getting old.

Forgot about him. I lived 2 minutes from Furman growing up and if I wasn’t going to a Clemson game I would try to make their games. Football was huge in the late 80’s.

I have nothing really against them

But I do find it funny when one of their fans occasionally tries to pop up and talk trash about Clemson basketball.
Like how about make the tournament at least once before saying anything?
