Coach Tommy Bowden turned 69 today.
There are many opinions regarding Coach Bowden, but I will say he did do a lot for the revamping of the football program facilities. He seemed like a genuine good guy, and I think he genuinely loved Clemson during his tenure.

The win over Tennessee (2004 I believe) in the Bowl game is right up there for me as one of his best moments.

I will never forget sitting in Groves Stadium in Winston Salem, NC in 2003 and watching that 45 - 17 debacle unfold (it was 35 - 0 at the half). I don't recall ever seeing Clemson play a worse half of football in my life.

I was there. Clemson was sleep walking. Told my buddies on the way home Tommy was on his way out. Did not know it would happen the same week but the writing was on the wall.

Did you forget the bowl game against West Virginia ???
IMO worst game ever. Dabo was HC but fans seem to forget that game.

Good Christian Man.
Good Recruiter.
Good on Facility Upgrades for the program.
Turribel interview. He came off as having all the personality of flaking paint.
Turribel Gameday Coach. In any times of stress, he would just start eating grass, and walk around with the proverbial "deer caught in the headlights" look plastered all over his face.
I would have called him the Greatest Houdini of All Time when it came to doing just enough to keep hanging onto his job. But then, Brad Brownell came along...and showed us all what a True Master Magician looks like.

bare. The 90's was not good decade for Clemson. I thought he did rather well.... at times during his stay. Yes, there were some very bad loses too. The Hatfield and West era nearly destroy Clemson football after Danny Ford left. Coach Bowden ran a clean program and was 7-2 against SC. For that I wish him a Happy Birthday.

As others have mentioned, cupboard was not full when he got here and immediately made us a competitive team and one that was fun to watch. I remember that first season very clearly.
He should get more credit with regards to the foundation he laid out and left for Dabo.
Tommy seemed to get trapped with “good enough” and I’m not sure he believed we could be on par with his daddy’s team. So he took us as far as he could.
And then this Dabo fellow manifests this crazy ride…..

and reluctant to change even when it was abundantly clear that what he was trying to do was not working. While he had success in some areas, he was not a particularly good coach, and it was his inconsistent results that ultimately led to his departure.

Bobby also had been around a lot longer and was successful for a long time before everything started needing to change so often. Much of his coaching career was in simpler times.

Dabo could be in the same situation at Clemson. A lot of changes with little NCAA leadership or ACC Conference leadership. College Athletics looks like a are where severe tornadoes and hurricanes can have hit and we have inadequate leadership to get the mess cleaned.
If I were a HC and had a solid contract I would stay put until this disaster called college athletics is back on track.

TB had some bad luck games too. For examples me when Aaron Rodgers (??) dropped a TD pass that would have given TB a 10 win season. Dropped passes, fumbles and running incorrect WR routes and interceptions cost TB’s Tigers some Wins
Same reason Dabo lost some games too.
I think we should give both HC’s props for raising the Clemson Football to ELite Status. TB laid a solid foundation and Dabo built the Skyscraper ! 🏆🏆
Dabo is a great HC but he also was given more $$$$$ to work with. Especially hire better assistants.
Both HC’s deserve our appreciation.

Excellent Post. Dabo is a great coach and you can’t take away his accomplishments. He is a unique HC with great ideas that lead to much of the success at Clemson.
IMO while Tommy Bowden was HC if Clemson had invested more money into the football program I believe TB would have achieved more success at Clemson. He still was successful and built a solid program leaving the program in excellent condition with a solid foundation for Dabo to work with.
TB deserves credit for excellent hires ( Dabo ) and leaving Clemson in solid condition for Dabo to build on. TB made it clear as he resigned to achieve more success at Clemson must invest more money into the program. He also recommended Dabo as interim HC.
TB also started the positive culture Change at Clemson. Fans need to give TB the credit he deserves for putting Clemson on the right path for future success. It seems like all some fans want to do is focus on the negative things during TB’s tenure and blame him for many things that belong to the BOT and the Athletic Director.
I stand firmly by my post. If we had not hired TB Clemson most likely would not have 2 additional NC Trophies as well as the other successes during 2010-2023. Please don’t let your emotions cloud you judgement about Coach Bowden. He achieved many things at Clemson and put us on the right track.
IMO we most likely would be an above average ACC team. Occasionally going to a New Year’s Day Bowl.
Happy Birthday Coach Bowden. Thank you for the achievements while as Clemson’s HC. God Bless you and your family. Thank you for putting you heart and soul into Clemson Athletics and Tiger Football. Many appreciate you very much and your time at Clemson. Congratulations on your accomplishments while the Tigers Head Football Coach.

The “Bowden Bowls” also helped bring a lot of national attention to Clemson that we might not have received otherwise.

I always thought of him as a stand up guy. He did get the ball rolling on the need upgrades of the facilities. His biggest highlight will be bringing Dabo on staff. One of the best hires in any sport in Clemson history.
Happy Birthday Tommy. 69 dang how time flies.

Bowden did great things for Clemson and we would not have gotten where we are today without him.
He brought in Dabo and Brad Scott. That right there is enough.
We started getting recruits like CJ Spiller under Bowden, even though we know that was Dabo from the recent article.
When he was fired, he made them give Dabo a chance... worked out well.
He was a great hire.... he did great things, and I hope he is welcomed back when he comes to Clemson with open arms.
