Frank McCaffrey has been at Iowa exactly the same amount of time Brad has been at Clemson. In that time he’s been to 7 NCAA tournaments to Brad’s 3, won twice as many tournament games, and picked up a conference tournament championship.

Maybe we could trade or hire him after we fire Brownell?

That is way too much time left to be fouling up 3.

Waiting until there are no more than 3-4 seconds left would allow less time for the other team to make a comeback.

since the foul came when the dribbler was too far out and in no position to shoot when he got fouled. But that general strategy worked and not fouling at all in that situation has not worked for us many times , including with Purnell.

You would be surprised the amount of coaches that dont foul in that situation.

But, do it before the other team has a chance to launch a trey and tie you.

Please pass this info on to Brad, since he is obviously not aware this tactic exists.

Brad is aware of this strategy, and has used it before.

He has also lost doing this, so it’s not as clear cut as some people seem to think. If it was obviously the better strategy, everyone would do it.

In hindsight, fouling would have been the better option. Still, not a guarantee. CC Harrison burning us when Rick Barnes employed this tactic is a good example of it backfiring.
https://www.goupstate.com/story/news/1998/02/01/harrison-is-double-trouble-for-tigers-last-second-3-pointer-gives-pack-ot-win/28958058007/
Several gaffes in that one. Can’t remember the board’s reaction back then. I’m sure it was epic
Had this tactic been employed, would haters have criticized had it backfired? We know that answer. Every decision, every missed shot, every critical turnover will be a coaching/culture referendum for that crew.
I don’t see Neff questioning the strategy, but will most certainly grade the loss. Afterall, he is mainly looking at the last 6 years, right?
Edited: posted link to Rick Barnes loss using the foul tactic.

Exactly.
I think the last half of his career is relevant when determining the future. Funny the haters don't count his first year with OP's players but definitely count the next year with all OP's players and a freshman class..... like we have ever recruited at the level to have instant impact players as freshman.

In the correct situation, conceding two but not allowing three points is a good strategy.

Brad did not wish to employ such a tired tactic. It's much sportier to let a team that was hitting the three at a good clip hoist another one. See GT.

A lot of very high profile coaches dont foul in that situation. It's almost like they know more than the average tnet poster.
Damon stoudamire didn't foul us in a similar situation in that very game?
Remember when we beat UNC in chapel hill and hall of fame coach roy williams didnt foul?
When it works you typically dont hear about it, but when it doesn't you do. When high profile coaches are jot foiling in that situation (and there are a lot), i wouldnt complain.
I would prefer a foul in that siruation, but i dont believe it is clueless coaching if they dont.

We made 3 three pointers against GT. They made 15. You don’t understand how that should drive different strategy decisions?

Sure it could. So your stance is that you shouldn't foul when a team is struggling from 3, but you should if they shot the 3 well in that very game? What would you say the cutoff percentage us that you should and shouldn't foul?
Why do you think hall of fame coach roy williams didnt foul in the unc game where we made 12 3's that game, and aamir just hit a 3?
Again, high profile coaches make this decision every single week. It doesnt work all the time. Doesn't make it a poor coaching decision.

For about the 1000th time for you Brad-apologists: One poor coaching performance/decision is not the problem. Dozens compiled over a decade plus is the problem. You are comparing one Brownell decision to one Roy Williams decision and somehow that is logical to you as a defense of our mediocre coach.
Brownell faces increased scrutiny, for good reason. That’s what happens when you coach yourself onto the hot seat.

Except McCaffrey is a demonstrably better coach than Brownell. And whether to foul or not is entirely situational - not supposed to be the whim of the coach. All the reasons for fouling were in play against Georgia Tech. Stop blabbering.

Agree but also we lost the GT game partly because of missed FTs late.
Generally, we’ve lacked poise late in games and that tends to be coaching/culture. You can feel the tension in the building late in games and it used to be that way in football too under Bowden…

Thats how NC State won their hoops natty

Jimmy V’s strategy was to force tourney opponents to win it/lose it at the free throw line. Houston, and at least one other team choked at the line and State snatched victory from defeat. First time I saw the strategy used to perfection.

Pre double bonus. The only chance that team had was to slow it down and hope for missed FTs. And yes, executed to perfection.

I totally get what you are saying. There are 2 camps here on tnet. I'm am of the opinion that "if you want to really win in a sport, then 14-15 years is enough. If you want to simply have a program that flashes with decent teams once every 5 then stay with Brad. Program is clean, graduates his players, and no ncaa violations. So other than tournament appearances, markey wins, and any hope of conference championships Brad is great.

Not BrownL. Entire row of college kids in front of us knew to do that, then box out to salvage Ga Tech, but no, we give up game tying 3, lose in double OT

Excellent point, sarcasm taken! I would suspect the odds of winning a game like the one we lost to Ga. Tech, would be probably be in 80+% range by fouling.
