PJ and the 3-pt shot: Brownell and PJ have to be smarter about this.

I get it. Most teams give PJ the 3 to start the game. PJ is a decent 3-pt shooter, and if he's hot from long range, it will force the defense to come out and defend hem, thereby opening up the paint. I get it, and we're not wrong for letting PJ shoot from way out there ... some. If he's hot, the strategy works, and it's great. But if he's off, and he misses 3 or 4 long ones, that means our opponnents strategy to dare PJ to beat them from 3-pt land and get him out of the paint has worked. That's when, as a coach and as a player, you have to go to plan B, and get PJ back inside. PJ is an All-American, NBA level talent, but at this level, he is most effective in the paint, and our priority should always be to get him operating underneath. PJ is good enough to put this team on his back and win, but he can't do it if we allow our opponents to trick us into making PJ primarily a perimeter player.
As I've said before, every missed sot, every turnover, and every loss is not 100% Brownell's fault, and screaming "FIRE BROWNELL" every time something bad happens is idiotic. Having said that, in my very humble opinion, Allowing PJ to go 2 for 10 from 3-pt land is a big red flag, and it lies squarely on the shoulders of the head coach.

No one disagrees. Additionally, our guards have to play better. Driving to the lane and shooting or dishing is an option we never took last night. Our guard play is inconsistent. One can shoot and not dribble and one can dribble and not shoot.

After the NC St game I said that teams might use that game as a blueprint for how to beat us. One of the points was to give PJ open 3s early because he frequently hits a couple at the beginning of the game and then starts feeling it and jacks up a bunch more that don’t go in. Case in point last night - PJ hit 2 of his first 3 three point attempts and went 0-7 after that. Just seems like he starts string but can’t sustain those shots as the game goes on. May be conditioning. He seems to get tired during games and you can’t be a good 3 point shooter when your legs are gone.

So true. Settling for the 3 and removing your inside advantage is a loss for us. I think the plan is to keep doing it though and hoping he will shoot well. Don’t seem to be changing anything.

Agree almost 100%.
I disagree on the NBA talent thing. I just do not think he has the foot speed or overall athleticism to make it in NBA.
But happy to be proven wrong.

He's tweener. He's not big enough to play underneath in the NBA.

He will have to play the perimeter and improve his 3pt shot if he is to make it there.

Good point. I like how nuanced you were with this. I get irritated when people act like he needs to just give up shooting threes entirely because he does have great shot making ability for a big man. But I agree with you that sometimes, like last night, he falls much too in love with it. I think balance is key. PJ should take three-point shots when good looks present themselves, but he also can't abandon his position and get too far outside. His main focus should be on getting the ball in the paint and scoring from close range. The rest of the team also has to be disciplined about this because they're the ones who have to pass him the ball when he's open in order for that to work. PJ also shouldn't rush the shots; like I said, he should shoot when he has a good look, but he shouldn't immediately chuck a three at the beginning of a possession, and he also shouldn't force the three if he's too deep or if he's guarded tightly.

Even the announcer, a former Notre Dame player, said nobody on their team could stop PJ or Ian inside.

They were severely overmatched inside. It was not a game that needed the outside shot to open up the inside.

whew i thought you had maybe committed clintonside after we won a few in a row and there was not a peep from you of congrats or anything. figured a loss would bring you back out of the woodwork. you are one pathetic individual.

I believe Brownell said something to the effect that some of our more veteran players were trying to shoot themselves out of a slump (paraphrasing)…. I agree - and I feel like this isn’t the first game it’s gone that way…
It’s baffling that I see it and so does Brownell and no steps are taken mid game to correct the behavior…

A well placed timeout would be helpful. We have too many stretches of scoring droughts mostly due to poor shot selection and quick triggers. The coach needs to get control of that.

I’ll add Beadle to this concern. He’s downright dangerous driving to the basket if he doesn’t lose the ball in the process. Easily the Tigers most athletic guard. Him shooting a wide open three is a defensive rebound about 90% of the time. We really need role players to add what they do best not what they do worst.

Schief should take the 3 pointers, not Hall. He’s 51% from behind the arc and Hall is only 32%

as long as they are good looks and within the flow of the offense.
He’s a good shooter. He didn’t shoot well against Notre Dame, but you never tell a good shooter to stop shooting if he is getting good looks.

The game of BB is won or loss against good defense on the inside. Brownell is still learning the game after 20 years of coaching. Give coach K a lead in the final few minutes and he would win 99% of the time. We have a nice fellow but not a great BB coach. The same thing that has gone on for 14 years will continue. If you are satisfied with this then keep Brownell as this is your future.
