Gideon Davidson

Aug 23, 2023, 3:54 PM

I live in southwest Virginia, more precisely - Roanoke. I will be on the sidelines this weekend taking photos of Salem High School and Liberty Christian High School football game. This game has been circled for a long time because it will be matching up 3 Division 1 players in an opening game. Gideon Davidson of Liberty Christian, a Clemson commit, will be going up against a Tennessee commit (Peyton Lewis) and Chris Cole, committing to Georgia, Miami, Penn State, Tennessee, Southern Cal, and Virginia Tech on Sept 10th. Since I will be attending, I decided to take some notes and post them next week. Let me know if you have any specific questions or things you want to know about, and I will do my best to answer. In the meantime, here is some info on these guys Gideon will be facing.

Chris Cole - The 6-foot-4, 220-pound linebacker is the top-ranked player in the state by both ESPN and 247Sports heading into the season.
Cole is a returning Class 4 All-State second-team selection after collecting 76 tackles, 11 of which went for loss, and enters his senior campaign having tacked on 35 pounds. He’s fielded FBS offers from over two dozen schools, has his list down to six (Georgia, Miami, Penn State, Tennessee, Southern Cal and Virginia Tech) and is slated to announce his commitment Sept. 10.

Peyton Lewis - The 6-foot-1, 195-pound senior is an instrumental part of the Spartans run-heavy offense, returning to Salem after accumulating over 1,500 rushing yards and 17 touchdowns. He not only earned a Class 4 All-State first-team selection at running back last year, but garnered one as a kick returner and added a second-team selection as a punt returner.
A Tennessee commit, Lewis is the third-ranked player in the state, according to ESPN, and the top-ranked running back across ESPN, 247Sports and Rivals.com

Yes, that should be fun to watch. i would be curious about what type defense Salem uses to try to stop Gideon and how it worked. How well does Liberty's Oline look and how well Gideon hits the holes etc...
Enjoy! And thanks for asking!

Unfortunately, my first question regards Chris Cole (vs. Gideon Davidson). You indicated Cole "tacked on" 35 pounds entering his senior year. Does that mean he played linebacker at 185 lbs his junior year (sounds awful light for a linebacker), or that he tacked on 35 pounds to your listed weight (220 lbs) bringing him up to 255 lbs as a senior (sounds a bit heavy for a high school linebacker (of course, he is 6'4"). Just wondering--Thanks!

Also, not sure, but assuming you'll have a performance comparison between Davidson & Lewis (i.e., # of carries, # of yards; # of receiving yards and # of catches & # of targets; and # of kickoff & punt return yards/chances, if applicable). That would be really nice reporting!

Finally, when you post your report for the game, what will your "Title" be (for ease of finding it), and what day/timeframe are you planning to post it? I'm really looking forward to your post--Thanks in advance!

Gideon vs. Chris Cole and Payton Lewis lived up to the hype. Although it was a relatively low-scoring game, there was no shortage of excitement with these incredible athletes. Chris Cole is the real deal, whoever gets him (the word around here is Georgia) is going to get an explosive player. In the first half, he had several tackles and two pass breakups where one should have been an interception. He also chased down Gideon from behind with a good angle to stop Davidson from scoring on a 60-yard run in the fourth quarter. This 60-yard run would have around 80...

Peyton Lewis was as good as advertised. Although I thought he could have run up the gaps a bit quicker he did run outside a lot with great success.

This brings us to Gideon Davidson - This young man is the real deal. Although not as big in stature as the other two players, this kid is fast. He has great feet and can juke the best of them. He has excellent vision and can see the field. There were several times he waited for the gaps to open and he then would turn on the jets. Although his stats don't show it, he had a big game, In fact, I could argue he had a better game playing safety. I lost count of the number of times he was either tackling or breaking up passes. He would absolutely come out of nowhere and disrupt Salem's play.

Davidson finished with 135 yards on 18 carries and a rushing touchdown in addition to his receiving touchdown, while Lewis ended with 137 yards on 25 carries and one score.

I have no detailed stats from this game but I will see if I can find some. However, in the meantime check this interview with Gideon's Head Coach - https://youtu.be/TmmHtw64Bso?si=pf-3lcMRoynTs6Ht&t=45
