George Bennett update

Everyone knows George (and Nancy) Bennett and what they have meant to Clemson over the years. I have his son's permission to post an update on his dad's health. George, if you know him, is one of the good ones.
Update on Dad (George Bennett. As some of you know from my last post about him, he has been basically in the hospital for the last month. He has congestive heart failure which means the heart is only pumping about 25%. Because of that, he keeps getting fluid building up around his heart and lungs...sometimes as much as a litre and a half. So, when this happens, he has to have the medical staff either drain it out or be given a diuretic to try to pee it out. It's a delicate balance between having too much liquid or not enough, which causes dehydration, as well as him being tired and weak. He was released from the hospital for the first time in almost a month on Tuesday and came back to Clemson Downs, but then had to go back to the hospital yesterday because of fluid. I'm giving you all this information because today (Friday), Dad decided that he was done with this cycle and that he is ready to see his parents and other relatives again. He very strongly told Mom and Bonnie that he was done with treatment and ready to go to hospice. So, tonight, he was transferred to the Cottingham House in Seneca. He is very much at peace with this decision and as lucid and articulate as I have seen him in several weeks. He knows he is loved by all his family and friends and would be happy if he were to slip off tonight while he sleeps. That could happen or it could be a week or more, but he is in an excellent facility being cared for by a wonderful staff who knows what they are doing. Please, when you think about Dad, say a little prayer for him and for Mom. Pull out a $2 bill with a Tiger Paw on it. Think about the canon going off at a football game. Go get an ice cream from the '55 Exchange. Remember the Tiger Cub Club. Ring one of the bells that he and mom donated to cancer centers around the state. Think of him as the biggest Clemson Tiger fan of all time...and one of the greatest men that ever walked on this Earth. (Yes, I'm a little biased). Thanks to each of you for all that you have meant to Dad and to Mom.

What a wonderful note from a great son to a great dad. He sure did not fall far from the tree. George Bennett has orange blood running through his veins and I know there will be a lot of Tigers praying for him tonight, including me. He embodies everything it means to be a Clemson gentleman! Godspeed George.

A true gentleman and one who has done so much for Clemson. In his own way he has done as much for Clemson as anyone= player, coach, or professor. My wife always jumps when at games when his cannon fires. As far as I know that cannon is the original that he developed and perfected on his own.
I pray God's grace for him and his family. I also thank him just for being who he is because he is the real deal. We have lot's of great fans but there is only one like him and we will never have another. I always have and always will admire him and his deep genuine love for CLemson.

Prayers for George and his family. I was raised in Clemson and know the Bennett family since I was a boy. Mother was a good friend of his wife. I know of no one that has done as much for Clemson sports than George other than the Coaches that helped the boys and girls that played sports for Clemson.
Thank you so much for what you meant for Clemson. Go Tigers!!

I knew George Bennett well during the 1980s and 1990s. He was a totally class act. A great promoter of Clemson athletics. A wonderful man. So honored to have known him.

His heart may not be doing the job that it is intended to do, but I do know that God will bless his heart and soul no matter what condition his heart is in bc that is what God does, he will bless us all that has always had a loving heart, it sounds like that is the heart that dad has always shown that he had with love and kindness, and I find it really easy to pray for him and mom!!!

This video is the perfect tribute. George made it as a tribute to Clemson but now I see it as a tribute to George. I agree with others here, that George loved Clemson more than anyone else I have ever met. George called Clemson “home” but it sounds like he is ready to go to his real home and join his parents and all the other Tigers in the sky. I hope he has a smooth transition.

Bennetts and whole family are a class act, the best reps of Clemson there ever was. And instrumental in building what we have today. Being a Clemson native from the get-go, and went through school with the kids, I understand this. Thankfully, via "work", I was able to meet with George and wife over at the Downs about a year ago.

George, Nancy, Bonnie, Jeff and the entire family are all amazing people. Have known George and Nancy as long as I can remember.
My father used to post under this name years ago before his passing in September 2023. George had recruited him into the alumni association in the 80s and ultimately to Alumni President. When George moved to IPTAY my father moved with him there, and ultimately to IPTAY President in the 2000s.
George is a man who is always willing to help and no one could ever say no to. Nancy just the same.
Last saw them with my family and 3 year old at the opening basketball game this past year. While talking he asked Nancy to reach in and give her a $2 bill, appropriately adorned with tiger paws. She was just 3 years old unaware of the significance of the event. One day when she is older I will tell her the story of being in the presence of a legend.
It is ok to rest George, we can take it from here.
