Garret Riley criticism

I really do not understand the criticism. Did anyone stop and think that maybe Riley doesn’t have the pieces or speed he needs at WR to run his offense? Cade will need to gain some weight in the off season so that the QB run game becomes more dangerous. But guys we have Wesco and Moore coming in who should spark the offense right away. Williams stellato and brown along with turner should develop into good players. Randall needs be more aggressive going forward. And at Running back assuming Shipley transfers mafah is likely to stay and to have Thomas and Adam’s Jr. Cade will continue to improve I expect next season offense to be among one of the best in the country potentially a top 10 offense.

year but when you really look at it, he inherited an offense with not one single player that looks too be future NFL caliber. Can't really do allot with so little talent.

On the defensive side yes. Offense not so much.

Mafah and Shipley maybe. I believe Brown will but we didn't know that. Williams might make a team as well but has been out almost all season.

let's regress: there's two ways to read "Not For Long"

1. being NFL

2. being literally, not a long career in pro football

These options lead you to two separate paths of thought.

Yeah, very few accomplish a complete turnaround in a year. Nick Saban went 6-6 his first year at Alabama. I expect the offense to be noticeably better next year.

Poor play design. Poor play calling at times. I do not see a massive change from the efficiency that the offense had under Streeter. I don't see true screens. Or picks or crossing routes. Or combination routes.

I will say the games I saw in person that Cade had open receivers, saw them, but hesitated throwing to them for some reason. Frustrating

that's because Cade waits too long to make the throw. Needs to improve on his decision making tempo.

This the fastest team he’s ever had.
This team will play for the natty.
Best OL ever.
Blah, blah, blah.

With all that praise it had to be 100% Streeter right? So why wouldn’t Riley come in and have a better offense than he had at TCU?

Fire 1 year OC (that improved things by 50 spots in offensive ranking) + pay $2 million = expectations to do better in 1 year than the guy that got fired

Guys give it a break. New players, new opponents, new terminology, nothing that he had any input on. Imagine each of you being given a new car with the only option being a manual transmission and you can only drive an automatic. It will take a little time, but you would get it right.
Have a little more confidence and just a little less pessimism

Part of it was unrealistic expectations based on all of the hype and fanfare. However, the honeymoon is now over. Time to deliver on those expectations next year.

I understand why. People want to make the problem a simple fix. It's easier yo believe all you have to do is fire one coordinator, as opposed to dealing with the reality that the team currently does not have enough playmakers.

Jessy,

I think top 10 is too much, but perhaps top 25 - which would be a big improvement - and with our defense, make us a very dangerous team.

I think he will be good but he's called some very odd plays imo and some of the plays design are not well thought out imo. You should have almost 0 plays with no checkdowns.

I expected more downfield passing. We do not use the middle of the field much past 15 yards. Having Williams would have helped though.

Theres a lot that has to change for this to be a top 10 offense.***

I see a very poorly coached offensive team. It’s not just the talent gap. It’s the scheme, technique, blocking, etc.

Not saying he is the Venebles of the Offense yet but…

Defensive rankings
2011: 81st
2012 (BVs 1st yr): 46th
2013: 23rd
2014: 3rd

Even BV took a few year to fix his side of the ball with very few legit pro prospects. Give the man some time to implement his system with his players. It’s not always plug n play

Venables fixed the defense immediately. It took him a few years to get to ELITE, but that's not what we're talking about.

The offense this year is no better than it was last year

Meh. He's a highly respected and very well-paid OC. Figure out a way to get the most out of what you have. I don't think he did that. With that said, I'm still a fan and can see big things coming if a few tweaks are made.

Jessy89.........Cade is 205. Same weight as DW4, same weight as TL16 his first 2 years. Everyone keeps touting Wesco and Moore as the saviors of the receiving core. Neither has busted 4.6 in the 40 and neither will be the deep threat we so desperately need. We need one of those little 5'9" waterbugs that can fly and cut on a dime. That would be nice. The newbies are more polished receivers than we currently have but don't look for them to be burners and tackle breakers. They are not that.

My expectation was more on scheme.
Different sets, reverses, deep shots, creative plays, etc.
I appreciate the running balance, but passing plays were not very creative.

To the 52nd best. And to anybody spinning this as expected from a 2 million dollar hire needs to take off the orange tinted glasses. The fact that this thing isn't a complete dumpster fire right now is because of Wes Goodwin. Our offensive room has to get better, bottom line.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

That would be a fair sentiment if Streeter hadnt been blasted all last year.

But Streeter was criticized for our bad offense, even though it was better than the prior year’s offense under Tony Elliott.

But to give Riley a pass, even though he’s being paid more than any other offensive coordinator in the country? Sorry, it just feels like homerism because people don’t want to admit that he’s underachieved.
