Game 7 - UVA Observations

Got the chance to rewatch the game today and here are some of my takeaways:

- Cades game has grown and improved alot but hands down his biggest improvement is pocket presence & awareness. His scramble and escape on the throw to Turner in the first half was a thing of beauty. There’s no chance the unconfident version of Cade last season makes that play.

- The INT he threw was just horrendous. Like Dabo said, it was just a bad play. Whether he saw the LB or not, I have no idea why he made the decision to make that throw it just wasn’t a complete-able ball in any universe.

- One of the more exciting things imo from yesterday was how easy the 1st team offense scored when Dabo put them back on the field in the 4th. A part of me was worried about them going out there and being effective after they had “shut down” in mindset thinking it was the 2s and 3s for the rest of the game but they absolutely didn’t.

- Stellato is really, really impressive. I hate that injuries have ruined the majority of his Clemson career at this point because I would love to see what kind of WR he’d be right now if this wasn’t essentially his “first” season with full time participation.

- TJ Moore is going to be an incredible weapon. Wesco got a lot of the hype because of his big plays early but I wouldn’t be surprised at all if Moore ends up being better by the time they leave Clemson.

- The defense isn’t nearly as bad as most posters on this board make it out to be. Don’t get me wrong, they aren’t on the level of BVs defenses back in his tenure but they’re still a really solid group. I’ve noticed it takes them about a drive or two, maybe a quarter and they adjust to what the offense is trying to do to attack them.

- On the subject of adjustments.. I don’t think Wes gets enough credit for his ability to make in game adjustments. I’ve noticed it before but really am taking notice this year. I would love for the defense to get the hot starts out the gate that Clemson fans got spoiled with when Coach Venables was calling the shots but am pleased that Wes can make the changes needed in game to string together stops.

- The state of the reserves on Defense is concerning. We definitely don’t have that “We Too Deep” depth we used to have. Not 100% sure the reasoning for it but I tend to lean more towards the side of it being youth and inexperience. We’re a really young group on the defensive side of the ball. Which stinks when it comes to the garbage time but I think will pay dividends when it’s their turn to get meaningful snaps in future seasons.

- Sammy Brown is really good at this football thing.

- Hauser reminds me a lot of Potter as a freshman. I don’t have nearly the anxiety when we trot him out for FGs or XPs, like I did watching us try and kick the football last season.

Really excited for this last stretch of the regular season and seeing the possibilities of what this team can do in the postseason.
I gain a bit more confidence with each passing game/week that this team can get really hot and surprise a lot of people in the playoffs.

The 2nd bye week is coming at a good time. Louisville is a solid ball team. Get an extra week to prepare, get healthy, and welcome them into the Valley for an important ACC game.

Handle business on the field and let all the other stuff handle itself.

Go Tigers!

We definitely have quick strike capability this year. Haven’t had that for a while.

Absolutely and it’s so nice to see. Us Clemson fans have been stuck watching incompetent offensive performances for too long lately. It’s awesome to watch them “impose their will” on defenses again.

Much appreciated. You always pickup more in a second watch thru of the game than you do with the first when the anxiety is kicking at its highest, hoping we win lol.

I know Mafah didn't hit the century mark yesterday, but he was still extremely effective. It's been mentioned several times by others, but the OL has been much better. Going to be a fun stretch these last several games. Good observations!

Oh the improvement in the OL is crazy.
I think Matt Luke will end up being one of the best hires Dabo has ever made.
It’s nice to have a competent coach, coaching the OL, after what we’ve seen put on the field the last few seasons.

^^^ gets it ^^^
When's the last time a Clemson QB's had time in the pocket to pitch a tent. Other poster mentioned Mafah. I'd just add that imo, Mafah's stats are definitely skewed. We've been firing so many long scores, that Mafah isn't needed much... in a good way.

We'll hit one of these games where a team plays a 3 man front and Mafah will feast.

Agreed. Mafah feels like an undervalued member of the offense but the argument could be made that he’s the best RB since ETN. Definitely better than Shipley imo.

I agree with almost all of it

maybe not some things stated strong enough. As far as Wes Goodwin I think the biggest difference is the talent he was able to recruit the first few years. Venables was almost a legend and when he left Goodwin had to establish his own recruit relationships both with HS coaches and players. That is why we are seeing less "depth." The same case as with Grisham were the WRs were not quite what we were used to seeing. Grisham seems to have established that quicker than Goodwin. Hopefully Goodwin will catch up soon. With the his DL coaches being "relatively" new to Clemson and college football again they will upgrade recruiting. Conn and Reed are established recruiters, but maybe NIL are interfering to some extent.

Obviously Goodwin got a great one with Sammy Brown (barring injury). Development of the young players and some more hits like Brown are necessary.

Goodwin is in that same kind of situation that we’re seeing DeBoer in at Bama right now.

They’re having to follow up arguably the best that school has ever seen.

I don’t think Wes is perfect by any stretch but I can think of a lot worse situations we could be in defensively and a lot of schools that would trade the house to have the situation we have in defense.

Your breakdown on recruit relationship is a really good one that I didn’t take into account, so sincerely thank you for giving me something to think about and access.

Really good assessment. I was with you all the way until you said Louisville was a solid team. Louisville's pass D is horrendous. Not quite as bad as wake or Stanford , but about like uva.

Louisville record looks better than it is. Blocked fg for a TD in ga tech game, or ga tech game probably a different outcome.

ND was smoking them in the first quarter until they fumbled on their 5 and let Louisville hang around. I think them scoring on Miami says more about Miami than it does about Louisville. It'll be about like wake or uva game. Easy win.

Side note - Louisville/bc game Friday should be entertaining.

Yeah I think Louisville is one of those teams who are capable of keeping things close and depending on you to make a mistake.

I just feel like more games than not Louisville has kept it close this year, that’s why I said they were solid but your point about their defensive rankings are very valid. Thanks for the info!

I think the defense is getting off to hot starts just fine. We've only allowed 10 points in the first quarter the entire season.

One thing I am loving about the D, besides getting lots of kids some valuable snaps, is our adjustments. Teams have moved the ball and even scored in the half but for the most part our halftime adjustments are top notch.

I think our almost "bend but dont break" is by design. Wes could be rope-a-doping the other OC knowing he will outsmart him with adjustments.
