Fundamental question on defense

Is it a talent problem or a coaching problem? What say ye?

I see a lot of people say that our defense isn’t as talented as in years past, and they may be right but my sense is that we are still blessed with a lot of pure talent. Maybe not too 5 defensive talent, but still really good.

My personal belief is that we have top 25 talent on defense. Might even be pushing top 15.

I think we have a coaching issue at linebacker and a talent issue at defensive end.

I think good coaching at linebacker could have easily generated a top 25 defense.

We are talented on defense but not as deep as in the past. Plus some of our best talent was inexperienced. What bothers me most is the lack of fundamentals such as trying to tackle NFL talented running backs with arm tackles and unnecessary contact with our DB coverage. Something’ ain’t right.

No we have some Talent issues. Some guys are good, but there's some issues and talent. You could probably get some other coaches who could do better, but they're still not going to have a top 20 defense with this year's crew.

Good evening,
I will agree that we don’t have elite talent at every level of the defense, but good enough to win. The problems that I see are poor technique.
We have gaps that are not filled properly by the DL and LBs. Our DEs continue to lose outside contain so QBs can extend plays and further stress our secondary. Our interior DL get out of pass rush lanes that allow QBs to step up to run or throw. Our secondary players are too hand oriented in coverage often losing leverage , playing catch up and not getting their heads around.
Believe it or not, all of this is correctable through coaching proper technique. The problem is not emphasizing these basics enough or allowing the players to continue to do things their own way. Nothing speaks like standing on the sidelines watching the game with the backups. If the coaches allow this to happen, it’s time to find new coaches.
My 2 cents. Have a good night.

Coaching can't make for talent. If you are getting physical pushed around, fundamentals aren't going to solve that.

Sorry that I have to disagree. Better coached teams beat more talented teams at all levels.
Think about The Citadel running through our DL/LBs for almost 300 yards. None of their OL are bigger, stronger, or faster than ours or they would have played at a different school with a different offense. So how did they do it? The techniques
that the OL use in their style of triple option offense. They are coached to do this to defeat teams that are not well coached to stop the type of blocking that they use.
Thanks for listening. Have a good night.

Stanford and citadel running the ball down our throats had nothing to do with lack of talent

I understand that the portal and nil has created a drag on our talent advantage, but getting bull rushed by the Socon and a pac-12 cellar dwellar (now acc cellar dweller) is inexcusable

I think there’s a big talent drop on both the starting and overall depth on defense. When I look at these guys, I ask myself how many of them do I think would start on the ‘18 defense? There are only a couple in my opinion.

Its a pumper deflection strategy.

It’s a case of both, but it’s the DC's job to look for mismatches and develop the talent you have.

We are 80th in rushing defense with at least 4 or 5 future NFL players. It makes no sense.

A program like Clemson should have a guy who can take Wake Forest’s defense and make them better than 70th in the country.

As many posters have said, fundamentals aren’t there, and gap integrity and tackling aren't being developed.

Mukuba said that his practices were soft and that he wasn’t growing. Could you imagine hearing that during CBV’s time here?

Let’s be done with Wes; he’s not helping.

Talent cal inky be developed so much. Mismatches can't be created out thin air. You have to havecdone advantage in the first place to create a mismatch.

The talent HASN’T been developed!! What do you understand about that? That’s why our 5 star “all American linebacker” can’t tackle as senior. That’s why Woodaz is always in the wrong gap and taking the wrong angle because we have a LB coach that knows nothing about being a LB. We have an overweight film masquerading as a real coach and people like you can’t understand why the D has become so soft and clueless.

We got two linebackers that have speed other DCs would kill for

You guys are ignorant

If we need to have nfl players at every position to win, then we should just give up now

We are a developmental program and we pay a DC $2m a year to develop

Coaching. Recruiting. Recruits do not want to play on a team where defense is suspect, and they won't get developed esp. That goes for both Defensive and offensive players.

I honestly don’t know much about Ward and recruiting

I know the coots were fed up with him and spurrier when things went off the rails, but I remember him trotting some really good defenses out there earlier when they had things rolling

Did he recruit clowney at SCar?

Personally I would say coaching at LB and talent at DE.
We won championships with multiple 3 stars and low 4 stars at LB: Kendall Joseph, Boulware, skalski, o’Daniel etc.

Parker is obviously a stud but denhoff is SoCon caliber player and the rest of the cast appears to be nothing more than depth . Now I will say the rotations have been suspect. There’s no way that Hoffler, Lawson, or even Armon Mason were worse answers than 44

It’s mostly a coaching issue. We aren’t as stacked as the the years we had BV but, the cupboard isn’t nearly as bare as Porkchop’s apologists would have you believe. Lol imagine that…a coach as mediocre and unqualified as Goodwin having apologists.

Coaching more than talent but we do have a major fall-off in Defensive talent compared to yrs past especially compared to Power Ranger era. How many NFL players do we put on the field now compared to just a few yrs ago?

But that could also tie into player development that goes back to coaching. End of day, its all on coaching as they recruit, develop, teach, call plays and inspire players.

I think it's a little of both.

DB'S and special teams are coached by the same coach so he can't really give either the full attention that is required
DE's is definitely a talent and depth issue. TJ parker is a beast but has no help on the other side of behind him to give him a rest.
RB'S, how have we not gotten another RB ready knowing Mafah has been hurt pretty much all year. It was evident in the Texas game some were ready to take the next step.
LB'S, I believe is definitely a coaching program. They steadily take bad angles and are out of position constantly.
Scheming and tackling basics are definitely needing improvements.
Dabo isn't blind nor stubborn enough to not see the same things us fans see and will make changes. Example, the portal. Who ever thought he would really use it? I will admit, not me.
