Picked up 20 HS recruits. I’m guessing graduating isn’t a thing at FSU so not many to pick up in the portal. Could be another bad year for Norvell. I would think he doesn’t survive two bad years in a row.

I can't see Deion passing up Florida State if it opens up. I can't see FSU not giving him an offer
if Norvell fails. Can you imagine the recruiting in the state of Florida he would accomplish?

He played a lights out game against FSU last season when they barely got out of Chestnut Hill with a win. Norvell pulled a Chicago Cubs and brought in a guy that murdered them, and only them.

Yet we didn't. And we haven't.
And now they have HUGE question marks all over their roster and huge holes to fill. Many unknowns.
They were already losing at least 16 out of their 2 deep before anyone jumped in the portal.

Right now FSU has approximately 55 guys on scholarship returning for next year. (Lost seniors, 4 guys declaring for NFL draft, and 16 in portal - one guy entered and took his name out, deciding to stay at FSU.)
With the new coaching staff coming in - both sides of the ball - I thought there would be at least 30 leaving.
1. I'm buried on the depth chart, new system, new coaches, I'm out of here.
2. Son, you don't fit into our plans. We'll be glad to help you find another school.
As I posted in a thread several days ago, "Live by the portal, die by the portal."
Norvell knows his entire future coaching career is dependent on the success the team has this year. He's betting his entire future as a coach on the new coaching staff and the portal guys he brings in this year. Even Nole fans are saying the chance for success is less than 50%.
Most folks are thinking he needs at least 8 wins next year, including the bowl game.

It seems like he was hedging his bet for this year as well with all the SR talent.
High stakes, and now he has no choice but to double down on the same method.
He did it once before, but who can say? Nothing would surprise me that much at this point.

Bret, I was talking to some guys down here that are from around Tallahassee. The story they tell is that Norvell was devastated by getting left out of the CFP last year and he let that leak into the locker room and it poisoned their mindset, created a terrible culture. I don't know that these guys have anything to back that up but just curious if you've heard any of that.

....he and the coaching staff totally over-estimated the OL ability to run block. The plan was for the offense to run block and then DJU would pass from the pocket on play action passing.
1. The OL couldn't run block.
2. The OL couldn't pass protect.
3. The OL was the worst coached OL in the country (leading to 1 and 2 above).
That was the foundation of the problems, but there were many more.
1. WRs couldn't get open.
2. WRs dropped passes when they were open.
3. DE were soft. Both guys were unable to rush the passer or set the edge on runs.
4. LBs were continually out of position, looking confused before the snap more often than not.
5. DBs were clueless when it came to play zone. So, they had to play man. And OCs ran passing routes commonly referred to as "man beaters."
But, on the positive side, our kicker and punter were as good as anyone in the nation. The punter should have been a shoe in for Ray Guy Award.

Norvell recruited a team from the portal and lost that team after one year. Heavy portal use is not sustainable and I commend Norvell for his growth in understanding and so quickly realizing that.
