FSU fan perspective on DJU.

I thought y'all might appreciate this. (Keep in mind, this is looking at DJ through garnet tinted glasses.)

1. Concern over his accuracy. But, the prevailing thought is that the QB coach (Tony Tokarz) will work with his mechanics and improve that aspect of his game dramatically.

Now, everything else is positive.

2. Great arm strength. FSU will be able to stretch the field vertically with his cannon for an arm.

3. Big, strong, athletic. No one will be able to stop him on running when it is 3rd and 1 or even 3rd and 2.

4. Because he is a big, strong runner, he will be a monster on zone read plays. He will make the right decisions on when to keep the ball and when to let the RB have it. The zone read play will be the bread and butter of the running attack.

I have tried to temper the enthusiasm of the fans, especially with respect to #4. I'll just comment on that point in this thread and leave 2 and 3 alone.

Seems to me like DJ's weakness with the zone read while at Clemson was his inability to process the play quickly enough to make the correct decision. Seems I recall it was more like he had made up his mind whether to keep or hand off before the snap and, therefore, the play was blown up behind the line way too often.

I've tried to explain that he seems much better suited to run the counter play. That is the play Norvell likes to run as his base running play anyway. Two years ago most of Trey Benson's huge runs were off the counter. the Nole OL was capable of running it quite well. This year, not so much. The linemen were not nearly as good as pulling and outnumbering the defense creating big holes for Benson and others to run behind.

I have suggested that DJ is better suited to run plays that minimize his decision making after the snap.
1. Run counters
2. Run the QB counter
3. Run play action passes, not RPOs.
Let him work on reading the field on pass plays (which he certainly needs to improve on) not on reading to determine if it should be run or pass.

But, they are fans. Garnet tinted glasses. Everything will be fine.

His arm strength is great …
That only helps when you have receivers running free …and running free from the first read…

I assume FSU bought some receivers in the portal to fill that role…

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

FSU brought in a bunch of receivers, HS and portal.

Seems like the #1 thing they all have in common is speed. Last year speed was a big problem. Wilson was a big (6-7) possession receiver. Coleman was just a great receiver. But, neither were track stars. The two fastest receivers on the team were true freshmen and both stayed dinged up all year long. One other guy, Deuce Spann, was also a burner, but saw very little time on the field as WR.

This year there will be no Keon Coleman or Johnny Wilson, but the speed as a whole will be much faster.

Just my opinion, but there won’t be much of anyone changing his mechanics, or much of what he does at this point. What you see, or have seen, is pretty much what you will get. One big problem he had at Clemson was his accuracy even on short throws if he was the least bit pressured. The other glaring problem was, essentially what was happening at Clemson earlier this year, (the FSU game being an example), where his turnovers often times ended up with a TD by the other team. They were just crucial game altering turnovers. You knew they were coming, and you could never relax. They were also so detrimental to the spirit of the defense. Don’t see any of this changing at FSU.

The real question is what school will he be "committing" to this time next year.***

All of the "positives" about DJ have been listed in his scouting report for years yet none have ever come to fruition....truth is, his main problem is something that is most difficult to fix. He has a weak mentality and crumbles under pressure. I suggest Florida State buy the best 5 offensive lineman in college football if they plan on him having a chance at success because if any team is able to get consistent pressure, it's a wrap

Bottom line: DJ does not like running the football. He is slow to commit to when and even where to run. I agree that he could be a monster. But monster running QB's Josh Allen, Ben Rothlisberger in his day, were not afraid of contact. DJ, at 250+ often appears afraid of contact. Couple his indecisiveness and fear with his lack of speed and you have a formula for failure instead of success.

3. Throwing the ball to the 4 yard route instead of the 12 yard route when both are open

5. Standing like a statue and staring at whatever 1 route he picked pre-snap for the entire play

I said this a few years ago and I stand by it. When DJ is playing at his best he is comparable to Ben Rothlesberger. A big strong arm and can be tough to bring down with an arm tackle, Accuracy is never a strong suit but can be good enough and not really a threat to run for big gains, but can get a few yards on the ground when needed.

When DJ is not playing well it’s because he is slow at processing the coverage and holds on to the ball for too long and waits to be sacked or he has to hurry up his throwing motion and his accuracy pays the price.

The number one focus for Norvell is going to be to get DJ to be able to bounce back from bad plays. We’ve all seen that once DJ makes a bad pass his demeanor changes for weeks and he plays poorly as a result of lost confidence. If DJ can stay out of his own head he has a lot of potential.

DJs biggest problem is between his ears. His processor isn't fast enough. He stands back there in the pocket like his feet are stuck in concrete. He's definitely got some tools that can make him dangerous but not consistently elite. Agree it's better to run an offense that limits his decision making.

Honest question, it took Norvell & Co 5 years to develop JT into the QB that would have likely been the 4th QB taken off the board.

What do you think is the realistic expectation of improvement for him with less than 9 months?

For what it's worth, his numbers were nearly identical after his transfer to a school with supposedly better WRs and OL while playing against lesser competition.

To be completely honest his accuracy for 3 straight seasons as a starter has been in the 50s as far as percentage. I have a hard time believing his accuracy will magically improve with a little coaching. DJ is a game manager. He has good ball security and seems to have improved on interceptions. He’s a first read guy and won’t get you in trouble. Need to rely heavily on running game and hope the first option gets open more often than not.

What I think FSU needs to understand is Travis had great pocket awareness, escapability, and could throw great on the run. DJ has okay pocket awareness but is very slow and has poor escapability. Not a great thrower on the run. I see a drop off offensively. I don’t see anyway that you don’t. Now with the portal acquisition your defense may be as good as last year which will help.

acceded to his demands by asking him to run half as much as he did his last year at Clemson.

1. DJ has poor mechanics. He's relatively unathletic and his footwork is atrocious. He often gets lazy with it, which hurts his accuracy. His regressed last year as his completion percentage fell from 62.1% at Clemson in year 3 to 57.1% in year 4 at OSU while completing 20% fewer passes.

2. Strong arm, but inaccurate on downfield throws. Basically the same TDs and Ints at Clemson and OSU in years 3 and 4. He struggles with ball placement on short swing passes in the flats, preventing the target from getting the ball in position to avoid tacklers and get up field quickly.

3. Big and strong, but, as he said himself, doesn't want to run the ball if he can help it. Bad feet and poor decision making eliminate any element of unpredictability. Runs smaller than his size.

4. Given that he told OSU coaches he didn't like running the ball, I would imagine he has told the FSU coaching staff the same thing. His rushing stats fell from 142 carries for 545 yards(3.8 yds/carry) with 7 TDs to 68 carries for 219 yards(3.2 yds/carry) and 6 TDs. He doesn't like running the ball. I wouldn't expect those numbers to improve in Tallahassee.

The pressure of the season will build up on him and he will struggle more down the stretch in difficult situations.

Well yeah, we know all that. His effectiveness is VERY hit and miss passing, strong arm or not. That's just who he is and another coach "working on his mechanics" isn't going to solve it. One second he wows you with an eye of the needle pass 35 yards down the field, next he can't hit the broad side of a barn.

Dude is literally Frankenstein trying to manoeuvre in concrete shoes. Sure IF he can get a head of steam he's a load to bring down. Mobility is NOT his strong suit in any shape, manner or form.

DJU will never play a down in the NFL. He could possibly have some room in the Canadian leagues or some such but that will be the extent of it.

Here's my take on DJ.

-Great human being.
-Elite arm strength.
-Inconsistent accuracy.
-Does not know when to put touch on a ball or rifle it in to a window.
-Can not throw guys open, he does not throw with anticipation and wrs often have finished their routes before he throws them the ball.(this is a huge issue for him especially vs m2m coverage).
-has a slow internal clock in regards to holding the ball (the opposite issue of Klubnik)
-powerful runner but indecisive on read plays.
-Not a fiery guy, which is good unless your team is in need of that guy who can be a vocal leader.

Bottom line He's an OK College QB, really a game manager is his ceiling. Not going to take over games and will a team to victory.

In the future, please post about DJU on the FSU boards.

We literally do not care any more. We've processed this conversation a thousand times already.

Respectfully.

For DJ at Oregon State in 23 versus at Clemson in 22. (8.1 versus 6.7) That’s a pretty significant increase. Watched almost none of the Oregon State games in 23 but I’m going to guess he had more explosive receivers than he had at Clemson in 22.

If he is/was so good, don't you think he'd still be at Clemson
